22 Years of Impunity! The War Crime That Silenced the Press and Bleeded the Truth Out in Baghdad

"They had us in their sights. They knew we were journalists, they knew we were unarmed, and yet they pulled the trigger."
The voice of Olga Rodríguez, a witness to the murder of cameraman José Couso, resonates today with undimmed rage. It was April 8, 2003: the US Army, in its colonial crusade for Iraqi oil, turned Baghdad into an execution ground. From the bridge of death, US troops fired in cold blood at the Palestine Hotel, a trench for the free press that exposed the crimes of an illegal invasion.
It wasn't a "mistake," it was a calculated massacre. First they bombed the headquarters of Al Jazeera, then Abu Dhabi TV. Three hours later, bullets pierced the hotel's windows. Couso, the Spaniard with a piercing gaze and camera at the ready, fell alongside Ukrainian journalist Taras Protsyuk. There was no "collateral damage." It was a systematic plan to silence those documenting the massacres. The darkness that followed was no coincidence: it was military censorship, the triumph of war propaganda.
Twenty-two years later, justice remains kidnapped.
The US courts shielded the criminals with the usual impunity; Spain, an accomplice, closed the case. Meanwhile, the mainstream media feigns amnesia. Until when? Couso's blood cries out from the pits of oblivion. In a world where wars are sold as spectacle, killing journalists remains the executioners' preferred method.
This commemoration is not mourning, it is combat.
Because remembering José is not nostalgia; it is denouncing that the empire continues to fire against the truth in Gaza, in Ukraine, in any trench where a free press is inconvenient. The slogan remains unchanged.

"They had us in their sights. They knew we were journalists, they knew we were unarmed, and yet they pulled the trigger."
The voice of Olga Rodríguez, a witness to the murder of cameraman José Couso, resonates today with undimmed rage. It was April 8, 2003: the US Army, in its colonial crusade for Iraqi oil, turned Baghdad into an execution ground. From the bridge of death, US troops fired in cold blood at the Palestine Hotel, a trench for the free press that exposed the crimes of an illegal invasion.
It wasn't a "mistake," it was a calculated massacre. First they bombed the headquarters of Al Jazeera, then Abu Dhabi TV. Three hours later, bullets pierced the hotel's windows. Couso, the Spaniard with a piercing gaze and camera at the ready, fell alongside Ukrainian journalist Taras Protsyuk. There was no "collateral damage." It was a systematic plan to silence those documenting the massacres. The darkness that followed was no coincidence: it was military censorship, the triumph of war propaganda.
Twenty-two years later, justice remains kidnapped.
The US courts shielded the criminals with the usual impunity; Spain, an accomplice, closed the case. Meanwhile, the mainstream media feigns amnesia. Until when? Couso's blood cries out from the pits of oblivion. In a world where wars are sold as spectacle, killing journalists remains the executioners' preferred method.
This commemoration is not mourning, it is combat.
Because remembering José is not nostalgia; it is denouncing that the empire continues to fire against the truth in Gaza, in Ukraine, in any trench where a free press is inconvenient. The slogan remains unchanged.
Neither forget nor forgive!
Justice for those who pointed the guns at cameras, not at weapons!
Memory is resistance. And as long as impunity reigns, we will continue to raise the photos of the fallen as flags.
