🇷🇺🇿🇼 President of Russia Vladimir Putin met with President of the Republic of Zimbabwe Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa (May 10, 2025)

💬 President Putin: Mr President,

Friends,

Welcome to Moscow once again. We are grateful to you for personally representing your country at the anniversary events commemorating the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

We remember that Zimbabwe, known as Southern Rhodesia at that time, had a training base where our allies trained flight personnel for combat aviation, pilots and navigators.

Zimbabwe is our reliable partner on the African continent. Next year, we will mark 45 years of diplomatic relations between our countries. You are always a welcome guest in Russia, Mr President.

In June last year, we had substantive talks on the sidelines of the St Petersburg International Economic Forum. Contacts are maintained between our respective government agencies; interparliamentary dialogue is advancing, and parliamentary friendship groups are active in both houses of the Russian Federal Assembly.

While current Russia-Zimbabwe trade remains modest, there is significant potential for growth across a range of sectors, including geological exploration, energy, and agriculture.

Cooperation in training your country’s specialists at Russian universities has also yielded positive results. At present, 460 students from Zimbabwe are pursuing studies at Russian universities. For the academic year 2025–2026, 125 government scholarships have been allocated. In addition, over 500 people are currently enrolled in online Russian language courses offered by St Petersburg State University. We also welcome the active involvement of your universities in the Russian-African Network University initiative.

We continue to provide the necessary assistance and support to your country whenever needed. Last year, we delivered 25,000 tonnes of wheat and tens of thousands of tonnes of fertilisers. Furthermore, in December 2024, a decision was made to allocate additional funding to the UN World Food Programme, among other support initiatives.

Russia and Zimbabwe share common – or closely aligned – positions on most key issues on the international agenda. We stand together in advocating for the establishment of a just multipolar world order based on the supremacy of international law. Mr President, we value your consistent support for Russian initiatives at the United Nations and other multilateral forums.

Russia places great importance on the comprehensive strengthening of its relations with the countries of the African continent.

In November 2024, Sochi hosted the first conference of the Russia–Africa Partnership Forum at the level of foreign ministers. We are now preparing for the second ministerial conference, scheduled for the end of this year, and we look forward to welcoming your country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs at that event.

Mr President, this visit presents an excellent opportunity to explore practical steps for advancing our bilateral cooperation. Let me once again say how pleased we are to welcome you to Russia.

You are most welcome!

🇷🇺🇧🇫 President of Russia Vladimir Putin held a meeting with President of Burkina Faso Ibrahim Traore (May 10, 2025)

💬 President Putin: Mr President, friends,

We are delighted to see you. Before we begin, I would like to thank you once again for your decision to take part in celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

I remember our constructive and productive conversation when you first visited our country in 2023 to participate in the Russia–Africa Summit in St Petersburg. Your current visit to Russia to attend celebrations of the 80th anniversary of Victory is deeply symbolic and reflects the friendly nature of the Russia-Burkina Faso relations.

I would also like to mention your country’s contribution to defeating German Nazism and its satellites. About 30,000 people from modern-day Burkina Faso fought as part of the anti-Hitler Coalition, in the Free France formations led by the legendary son of the French people General Charles de Gaulle.

Today, we are united by a common goal of fighting terrorism and extremism. We will continue to help the Republic in restoring the rule of law and constitutional order and to assist in suppressing the radical groups that are still active in certain parts of Burkina Faso.

Over the past two years, we have made significant progress in expanding mutually beneficial cooperation across various areas. In late 2023, after a pause that lasted over 30 years, the Russian Embassy in Ouagadougou resumed its operations. A regular political dialogue was established.

Even though bilateral trade remains modest, it is nonetheless on the rise, which is a promising trend that should, of course, be encouraged. We will work together to further strengthen economic ties and diversify mutual trade.

The Burkina Faso Economic Days in Russia in October 2024, which were attended by a high-ranking Burkinabe delegation headed by the Prime Minister, were beneficial in this regard.

Work is under way to create an intergovernmental commission. A dedicated working group was formed in late 2024.

We will continue to help your country in training national personnel. The Russian government scholarship quota for Burkinabe citizens has been more than doubled for the 2024–2025 academic year. This year, we are prepared to take 27 more students from your country. The tuition will be covered from Russia’s federal budget. In all, about 3,500 students from Burkina Faso received their education in Russia.

Cultural and humanitarian ties have been promoted since 2024 by the Ouagadougou-based Russia House, which offers Russian language classes, among others.

Cooperation in healthcare and sanitation holds a lot of promise. On April 24–25, Ms Popova visited Ouagadougou. We are ready to carry out joint scientific research, develop laboratory infrastructure, and train specialists.

We prioritise humanitarian aid to Burkina Faso as well. Last year, we shipped to your country 25,000 tonnes of wheat free of charge. This month, a large shipment of other foods will arrive in Ouagadougou.

We appreciate close coordination with Burkina Faso in the international arena, including at the United Nations and other international organisations. Consultations between Russia and the Confederation of Sahel States have become a valuable new cooperation format. The first such meeting took place at the level of foreign ministers in Moscow in April.

I think our prospects are good across many areas. We have an opportunity to discuss some of them today.

🇷🇺🇻🇳 President of Russia Vladimir Putin and General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee To Lam held talks in Moscow (May 10, 2025)

💬 President Putin: Comrade To Lam,

I am delighted to see you again.

First of all, I would like to thank you once again for deciding to attend the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. Furthermore, Vietnam was represented at the military parade by your country' military unit. Thank you very much for this sign of appreciation.

We always emphasise that Russia and Vietnam are bound by a years-long friendship that dates back not only to the times when Vietnam was fighting for its independence, but also to the Great Patriotic War because — I would like to remind our colleagues and the peoples of our countries — a voluntary corps of the Vietnamese internationalist troops fought in the Battle of Moscow during the Great Patriotic War. Of course, there were major events during Vietnam’s struggle for its own independence. All this strengthened our relations throughout decades.

Today, Russia-Vietnam relations are progressing across all sectors. We maintain regular contact through diplomatic channels. Our government bodies cooperate at the parliamentary level. Last year, our mutual trade grew by 20 percent, which is a good indicator.

This year is full of significant and diverse landmark events: the 80th anniversary of Vietnam’s independence, which we discussed yesterday, the 50 years since the liberation of the south, and 75 years of diplomatic relations between our countries. All these milestones are important and highly symbolic for our countries. We will certainly highlight them, but above all, we must continue to look to the future.

As before, we will focus on humanitarian projects, such as personnel training. This has always been an important part of our work. I remember when I met with graduates of Russian universities during my visit to Vietnam, that meeting was so full of warmth. We see that Vietnamese society is very mindful of Russian-Vietnamese relations. We also value this very much.

We are delighted to see you. Welcome.

🎖 On May 9, the Russian Embassy in the United States hosted a reception in honor of the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War with the participation of Russian and American veterans, ambassadors and senior diplomats from CIS countries, as well as heads of diplomatic missions of a number of BRICS states and other countries friendly to Russia.

🇷🇺🇺🇸 In his speech, Ambassador A.Darchiev noted that in the victorious 1945 the legendary and heroic Red Army, which broke the back of Hitler's war machine, put the final point in the Great Patriotic War in the defeated Berlin, where the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany was accepted. As it was emphasized, shoulder to shoulder with the Red Army, where all peoples of the Soviet Union stood together, fought the armies of the United States and other countries of the anti-Hitler coalition, including heroic China and fraternal Mongolia, which opposed Germany's ally - militaristic Japan.

🥇 The attendees honored with a minute of silence the memory of 27 million Soviet people who gave their lives for the freedom and independence of the Motherland, the liberation of Europe from the absolute evil of Nazism, which is once again raising its head there.

🔹The Russian Ambassador called for the restoration of normal, common sense-based relations between Russia and the United States, which have a special responsibility for maintaining stability and security in the world, based on the experience of combat alliance of our countries during World War II, which for the Soviet people was the Great Patriotic War.

🎹 A concert with the performance of wartime songs was also held. The Embassy staff together with the guests performed the song “Victory Day”.

⚡️ Russia's President Vladimir Putin's Statement (May 11, 2025)

💬 #President Putin: We suggest the authorities in Kiev to resume direct talks, which they themselves interrupted in the end of 2022.

We propose to start the talks without delay, next week, on September 15, in Istanbul.

Full transcript to be added later
🇷🇺🇻🇳 Press statement by President of Russia Vladimir Putin following Russian-Vietnamese talks (May 10, 2025)

💬 President Putin: I consider the visit of our Vietnamese friends, timed to coincide with the anniversary of the Great Victory, as yet another evidence of the time-tested friendship, military comradery and mutual support between our nations. Russia remembers Vietnamese internationalist volunteers who fought heroically alongside Red Army soldiers in the Battle of Moscow in 1941–1942. Last year, a sculpture was erected in the Patriot Park near Moscow to honour their deeds.

In turn, the Soviet Union put significant effort into helping the emerging Vietnamese state to continue its struggle for freedom and independence, contributing to the country’s economic and social progress, infrastructure development, and personnel training. Undeniably, the Soviet Union also made a significant contribution to the liberation of southern Vietnam and the country’s reunification. April 30 marked the 50th anniversary of those important historical events.

This year also marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our countries. Over the years, our bilateral ties have grown stronger, evolving to a comprehensive strategic partnership, and continue to expand in the spirit of equality, mutual respect, and consideration of each other’s interests.

The talks we have just had with Comrade To Lam serve as a clear proof of all this. We substantively discussed Russian-Vietnamese cooperation across all sectors as well as the international agenda in a warm and constructive atmosphere.

As you have seen, an impressive package of documents has been signed following the talks. We have adopted a Joint Declaration, in which we reaffirmed the key principles of our bilateral partnership and mapped out specific guidelines for our further work.

First and foremost, these agreements are aimed at expanding our mutually beneficial economic cooperation. As of the end of last year, Russia-Vietnam trade grew by more than 20 percent, reaching US$6 billion. There is still more to achieve, as back in 2021, our mutual trade was slightly higher than that. But we know what steps are necessary to reach this prior level and go beyond that.

<...>

Naturally, during the talks, we also discussed important issues on the global and regional agendas. I would like to emphasise that Russia’s and Vietnam’s respective stances on these issues largely coincide or are closely aligned.

Our countries firmly uphold and support the rule of international law, the sovereignty of states and non-interference in internal affairs. They coordinate their efforts at key multilateral platforms, including the Russia-ASEAN dialogue, and jointly advocate for the peaceful and sustainable development of the Asia-Pacific region.

🤝 In conclusion, I would like to once again express my gratitude to Comrade To Lam for the productive joint work. Today’s talks will undoubtedly serve to further strengthen the Russian-Vietnamese comprehensive strategic partnership, which benefits both nations.

I already expressed our gratitude to Comrade To Lam for his direct and personal involvement in the development of Russian-Vietnamese ties, and I would like to emphasise this once again.

Since Comrade To Lam became General Secretary, we have seen rapid progress of Russian-Vietnamese relations and cooperation in many fields. Comrade To Lam, we greatly appreciate your contribution.

🇷🇺🇮🇷 Russian Embassy in Iran:

🇷🇺 On May 9, the Russian Embassy in Iran—the very same building where in 1943 Joseph Stalin succeeded in persuading the Allies to agree on the date for opening the Second Front — hosted a solemn reception marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

The event was attended by high-ranking representatives from Iranian ministries, government agencies, and parliament, as well as ambassadors and military attachés from the overwhelming majority of Tehran’s diplomatic corps.

It was a remarkable evening — a celebration of peace and humanity made possible by the Soviet people’s victory in the bloodiest conflict in human history.

💬 Russia’s Chargé d’Affaires ad interim in Iran, Rafael Gevorkyan, addressed the attendees:

Today marks a truly special occasion. We gather to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory over Nazism—a triumph that came at a tremendous cost to the Soviet people.

The Soviet Union sacrificed 27 million lives in this fight.

These were the youngest, the brightest, the bravest among us. Of them, over 13 million were civilians — more than 7 million of whom were starved to death by the occupying forces.

We bow our heads in remembrance of the heroic soldiers who gave their lives to liberate not only their homeland, but the entire world from the evil and hatred of Hitler and his allies.

We honor the workers on the home front—those who toiled day and night in factories and plants, never resting, always believing in victory.

We mourn those who were tortured and killed in captivity, those who perished in horrific concentration camps, and those who died from hunger and freezing cold during the siege of Leningrad.

We are grateful to the Iranian land, which served as a critical transit route for the massive volumes of weapons and equipment supplied to the Soviet Union through Lend-Lease. This will neve be forgotten.

The memory of the Great Victory — and the heroism of the men and women who gave the world its freedom—is eternal.

No matter how fiercely some may try today to erase it or distort the truth, it will endure.

Today, we also pray for our servicemen and women, who are once again facing great evil—this time too, from the Western front.

We have no doubt: another Great Victory awaits them—a victory for the eternal values of freedom, dignity, and compassion.

Happy Victory Day, dear friends!

Let us honor, let us remember, and let us never forget.

🔴🔴 On May 9, the day of the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory, a solemn wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Hörnli Cemetery in Basel, at the mass grave of 23 Soviet soldiers – the only memorial in Switzerland dedicated to Red Army soldiers of the Great Patriotic War.

💐 Every year, we gratefully honor the memory of the four soldiers buried here who died while attempting to escape Nazi captivity. Only two of their names are known – Grigory Titov and Ivan Sumachev. The granite stela also bears the names of other Soviet soldiers who died from their wounds in Swiss hospitals during the years of that terrible war.

🤝 The ceremony was attended by representatives of the Embassy of Russia in Bern, Russian Permanent Mission of Russia to the UN Office in Geneva, the Consulate General of Russia in Geneva, the Russian Mission to the WTO, as well as the embassies of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan in Switzerland.

🎖 After the official part of the ceremony, hundreds of our compatriots – citizens of Russia and other CIS countries – gathered at the memorial, along with our good friends – residents of Switzerland, Germany, and France. Many came holding portraits of their relatives – veterans and home front workers.

✊ As every year, the march of compatriots was led by the “kings of the Swiss roads” – bikers from the Night Wolves club, who arrived from different European countries. They were joined by representatives of public organizations and many other individuals. On the Victory’s anniversary, members of the People's Front also made their way to Basel, bringing with them the Eternal Flame from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow.

🏅 The heroism of the soldiers of the Great Patriotic War is immortal. We remember and are endlessly proud – for they look at us through the eyes of our children!

🌟 On May 9, 2006, Russia introduced the honorary title of 'City of Military Glory'.

This title is awarded to cities that saw displays of courage, perseverance and mass heroism by our country's defenders during fierce battles.

⚔️ Unlike the title 'Hero Cities', which are honours feats solely from the Great Patriotic War, the 'City of Military Glory' recognises heroic acts across various pivotal moments in Russian history, reaching back as far as the invasion led by Batu Khan.

The first award ceremony took place on May 7, 2007. As of 2025, 47 cities have received this honorary title:

Belgorod, Kursk, Oryol, Vladikavkaz, Yelnya, Yelets, Malgobek, Rzhev, Voronezh, Rostov-on-Don, Tuapse, Polyarny, Luga, Velikiye Luki, Veliky Novgorod, Dmitrov, Vyazma, Kronstadt, Naro-Fominsk, Arkhangelsk, Kozelsk, Pskov, Volokolamsk, Bryansk, Nalchik, Vyborg, Kalach-on-Don, Vladivostok, Tikhvin, Tver, Stary Oskol, Kolpino, Anapa, Kovrov, Lomonosov, Taganrog, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Mozhaisk, Maloyaroslavets, Khabarovsk, Gatchina, Grozny, Petrozavodsk, Staraya Russa, Feodosia, Mariupol and Melitopol.

🏅 The names of these cities are engraved on a granite stele in Alexander Garden in Moscow — part of a unified memorial ensemble alongside the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Alley of Hero Cities. Each City of Military Glory also features its own commemorative stele: a granite column topped with a double-headed eagle, adorned with the city’s coat of arms and the official Presidential decree bestowing the title.

Russian and foreign journalists waiting for the President's press-conference to start
🇷🇺🇵🇸 President of Russia Vladimir Putin met with President of the State of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas (May 10, 2025)

💬 President Putin: Dear friend,

I would like to express my gratitude to you once again for finding the opportunity to come to Russia for celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. You are always a welcome guest here.

We had a highly rewarding meeting last October, on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan. Earlier, in August, we held full-scale Russia-Palestine talks during your official visit to Moscow.

Russia has always paid special attention to its relations with Palestine. Our nations are linked by a strong bond of friendship, and we follow the tragic development of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, which has claimed more than 51,000 lives, with deep empathy and concern. Tensions are also growing in the West Bank. The Gaza Strip is experiencing a humanitarian crisis in the fullest sense of the word.

As a friend of the Palestinian people, Russia is doing its best to provide regular aid: last year, we sent over 800 tonnes of cargo to those in need, including food, medicine, and essential items.

We have always been convinced that lasting peace in the region can only be achieved on a universally recognised international legal basis that provides for the establishment of two states for two peoples.

Russia consistently advocates for providing humanitarian access and resuming the Middle East peace process. Regretfully, the situation is only getting worse. As I have just said, we are talking about a humanitarian crisis, a disaster, which is, of course, aggravated by decisions to ban even humanitarian aid and supplies of essential items and electricity to the Gaza Strip. This causes particular concern.

Unfortunately, the Gaza Strip ceasefire agreement reached earlier this year was sabotaged, and the escalation continues.

We will certainly exchange views on all these issues and discuss what else Russia could do to de-escalate tensions.

We will also focus on current bilateral issues. In December, Moscow hosted a meeting of the Russian-Palestinian Intergovernmental Commission, which set guidelines for our further joint work.

🇷🇺🇪🇬 On May 9, President of Russia Vladimir Putin and President of the Arab Republic of Egypt Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, who is taking part in celebrations marking the 80th Anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, held talks in Moscow.

💬 President Putin: Mr President, friends,

We are genuinely happy to see you all in Moscow at the celebrations marking the 80th Anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

As is well known, Egypt was a scene of some major battles during the war. The country became a foothold for our allies in the anti-Hitler Coalition in North Africa. In February 1945, Egypt officially declared war on the Axis, and so it is among the victorious states.

Our common fight against Nazism contributed to the establishment of ties between our countries. It is symbolic that the Soviet Union and Egypt established diplomatic relations precisely during the war, in August 1943, after Hitler troops were defeated at the Kursk Bulge.

🤝 Today, Russian-Egyptian relations are on the upswing. Our cooperation is multifaceted and based on the provisions of the Treaty on comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation.

We maintain regular and substantive political dialogue. We held our previous meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan in October 2024 where your country participated for the first time as a full-fledged member.

📈 Egypt is among Russia’s key partners in Africa. Last year, trade rose by over 30% to reach a record-breaking $9 billion whereas in the first two months of this year it grew by over 80 percent more.

An intergovernmental Russian-Egyptian commission is active. Major joint projects are being continued and we firmly believe that we will move on in all those areas. Our nations coordinate their approaches to current international issues including the Middle East.

Mr President, friends, we are glad to have this opportunity to discuss with you these and many other current issues and areas or Russia-Egypt interaction.

Once again, welcome.

🇷🇺 🇷🇺🇦🇲🇦🇿🇧🇾🇰🇿🇰🇬🇺🇿 On May 9, the Russian Embassy in India co-hosted a solemn reception on the occasion of the 80th Anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 jointly with the diplomatic missions of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic and Uzbekistan in New Delhi.

🇮🇳 Dr S.Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs of India, attended the function as the Chief Guest. Among the guests were senior officials of the Government of India, Members of the Parliament, ambassadors and military attaches of friendly countries, eminent representatives of local political parties, business, social and religious circles, scientific and cultural community, mass media, Russian compatriots.

☝🏻 In his welcome address, Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov underscored the sacred significance of the Great Victory for Russia and all the peoples of the former Soviet Union in that horrible war which took the lives of 27 million Soviet people. He especially noted the contribution of Indian soldiers and officers who fought alongside the Allies.

🎵 The performance of wartime compositions by the Song and Dance Ensemble of the Northern Fleet of the Russian Navy became a bright decoration of the evening that ended with festive fireworks.

🖼 The guests also had the opportunity to get acquainted with the exhibition "The Price of Victory" jointly prepared by the Embassies of Russia and Belarus in India.

🇷🇺🇧🇷 On May 9, President of Russia Vladimir Putin and President of Brazil Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who is taking part in celebrations marking the 80th Anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, held talks in Moscow.

💬 President Putin: Friends,

I am genuinely happy to meet with you, Mr. President. It has indeed been a long time since we last met. You intended to visit Moscow earlier, but work commitments prevented you, and I am delighted to welcome you to Russia. Welcome!

I have warm memories of our previous conversations both in Russia and in Brazil. They were held in a very friendly atmosphere and in a business-like manner. We managed to significantly improve relations between our nations largely thanks to our personal contacts.

As I have already mentioned, it has been long since you last came to Russia. Back then, in 2010, your visit was also in May, and a Joint Statement was adopted on the 65th Anniversary of the end of World War II.

☝️ Victory Day will always carry a special significance for our peoples who were fighting against Nazism. We are well aware that Brazil was among those who joined the anti-Hitler coalition. Your military units took part in combat activities in Italy and defended communication routes in the southern Atlantic thus contributing to our joint victory over the enemy. I know that Brazil, as much as Russia, honours the memory of those events and pays tribute to the feat of the victors.

I would like to point out that our relations continue to develop steadily, and high-level contact is being maintained. You always see the way to personally receive Russian representatives whenever they arrive in Brazil on working visits.

📈 Our bilateral trade is moving ahead. I want to stress that Brazil accounts for the largest share of our trade with Latin America and the Caribbean.

Russia is still the biggest exporter of petroleum products and mineral fertilisers to Brazil while your country maintains leading positions in the Russian food imports.

🤝 We are closely cooperating on the international stage, and we will revisit this topic later. This cooperation includes such venues as the UN, #BRICS and #G20.

I am happy to have this opportunity to discuss these and other matters of mutual interest with you, Mr. President.

✍️ Russia's Ambassador to Canada Oleg Stepanov's article in "Vedomosti" Newspaper (May 9, 2025)

Remembering Heroism and Learning from History: The Enduring Lessons of Victory in the Great Patriotic War

💬 Oleg Stepanov: In 2025, we mark 80 years since the Great Victory. For the people of Russia and for citizens of the former Soviet republics, May 9 is a sacred day — a day of shared joy, pride, and remembrance. It is a day to honor the moment when our fathers and grandfathers defeated the Nazi war machine and gave us, their descendants, the most precious gift of all: the right to live in freedom. <...>

In recent years, several Western nations have attempted to revise or reinterpret the outcome of World War II. The role of the Red Army in liberating Europe is being deliberately downplayed. Political elites distort history, whitewash executioners, and equate them with victims. The motive is obvious: to justify the surge of Russophobia, and to blur the shameful record of the West’s initial support for Nazism, from the Munich Agreement to its encouragement of Hitler’s campaign against the USSR under the pretense of “combating Bolshevism.” <...>

In Ukraine, a regime that came to power by unconstitutional means is now erasing the shared memory of our peoples. Worse still, it glorifies Nazi collaborators—Bandera, Shukhevych, and others of their ilk. This state-sponsored heroization of war criminals has led to the emergence of a new generation of neo-Nazi zealots, who terrorize civilians, suppress memory, and infect the Ukrainian identity with a Galician mutation of nationalism—first cultivated in Imperial Germany and Austria-Hungary, then refined by the ideologues of the Third Reich.

As Russia’s Ambassador to Canada, I cannot ignore an essential aspect of WWII history: the Soviet-Canadian wartime alliance. Our cooperation rested on the “Bridge of Courage” — the Arctic convoys that sailed from Canadian and British ports to Arkhangelsk and Murmansk. These maritime lifelines delivered to the Soviet Union vital war materials: military equipment, ammunition, food, raw materials, and medicine.

🚢 The Arctic routes were among the most dangerous of the war. Convoys faced freezing Atlantic waters and constant attacks from German submarines, bombers, and surface ships. Yet Canadian sailors displayed extraordinary courage and professionalism. Many paid with their lives. Russia remembers. Memorials and historical records continue to honor those who stood shoulder to shoulder with us in the fight for freedom and justice.

This solemn anniversary also compels honest reflection from today’s Canadian leadership. In particular, it requires acknowledgment that not all members of the anti-Hitler coalition upheld moral principles in the postwar years. For decades, both in Canada and across the West, the truth was hidden: Nazi war criminals and collaborators found shelter on Canadian soil.

Following 1945, tens of thousands of individuals from Central and Eastern Europe immigrated to Canada. Among them were SS members (including from the Ukrainian “Galicia Division”) and collaborators involved in mass executions of civilians in the occupied territories of the USSR. <...>
