🏅 On May 10, after a five-year pause, the "Immortal Regiment" was once again held in Geneva. Russian diplomats from the Permanent Mission and Consulate General of Russia in Geneva, along with their family members, joined hundreds of our compatriots, bikers from the "Night Wolves" club and other Swiss friends. They all gathered yesterday at the Place des Nations to honor the memory of their veterans and congratulate each other on the anniversary of the Great Victory.

💐 Participants in this vibrant, though, unfortunately, brief event (local authorities officially permitted it to last only one hour) sang beloved wartime songs and listened to stories and poems about the lives, heroic deeds, and fates of ordinary soldiers of the Great Patriotic War. It is thanks to their courage and sacrifice that these words were spoken yesterday – by their direct descendants, who are now raising children and grandchildren of their own.

🌐 The “Immortal Regiment” had a broad geography – participants had a chance to leave notes indicating their hometowns. The event brought together compatriots and friends from Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Belarus, Latvia, and Serbia.

🤝 We sincerely thank the organizers – members of the organizing committee of this international historical and patriotic initiative – as well as everyone who joined us on this important day. We are grateful to the Geneva authorities for giving people the opportunity to honor the memory of their great ancestors, and to those who chose not to disrupt the event with cheap provocations.

💬 Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva, Ambassador Gennady Gatilov:

🇨🇭 “The fact that the cantonal authorities of Geneva allowed the ‘Immortal Regiment’ to take place is already good news. We hope that Switzerland will continue to act in this constructive spirit, restoring the Confederation’s neutral status – both in relation to Russia and on the international stage as a whole”.

🇷🇺 Excerpts from Russian President Vladimir Putin’s statement to the press following the 80th Victory Day anniversary events:

📍 May 11, 2025, Moscow

❌ Russia has repeatedly put forward initiatives for a ceasefire, but they have been sabotaged time and again by the Ukrainian side. For example, the Kiev regime blatantly violated around 130 times the 30-day moratorium on strikes against energy facilities, which was in effect from March 18 to April 17 and was declared in accordance with our agreement with President Trump.

The Easter truce, initiated by Russia, was also not observed: the ceasefire was violated nearly 5,000 times by Ukrainian forces. Nevertheless, for the celebration of Victory Day which we also consider a sacred holiday we declared a ceasefire for the third time. We also communicated our position on this issue to the Western colleagues who, in my view, are sincerely seeking ways to resolve the situation. We made it clear that we do not rule out the possibility of extending the ceasefire in the future — but, of course, only after analyzing what happens over these few days and how the Kiev regime responds to our proposal.

❌ And what do we see? What are the results? The Kiev authorities not only rejected our proposal for a Victory Day ceasefire, but, as we all saw, they also tried to intimidate the leaders of the states who came to the celebrations in Moscow.

❗️ Let me reiterate: we have repeatedly proposed steps toward a ceasefire. We have never refused dialogue with the Ukrainian side. Let me also remind you: we were not the ones who broke off negotiations in 2022 – the Ukrainian side did. In this regard, despite everything, we propose that the Kiev authorities resume negotiations, which they broke off at the end of 2022 — resume direct talks. And I emphasize: without any preconditions.

❗️ We propose to begin without delay, next Thursday, May 15, in Istanbul, where the negotiations were previously held and where they were interrupted.

🇹🇷 As is known, our Turkish colleagues have repeatedly offered their services to organize such negotiations, and President Erdoğan has done a great deal to facilitate them. I remind you that as a result of these negotiations, a joint draft document was prepared and initialed by the head of the Kiev delegation, but under pressure from the West, it was simply discarded. Tomorrow, we have a scheduled conversation with President Erdoğan. I intend to ask him to provide such an opportunity for holding negotiations in Türkiye. I hope he will confirm his desire to facilitate the search for peace in Ukraine.

🕊️ We are committed to serious negotiations with Ukraine. The goal is to eliminate the root causes of the conflict and to establish a long-term, sustainable peace with historical perspective. We do not rule out that during these negotiations, it may be possible to agree on new ceasefires or a new cessation of hostilities. A real truce – one that would be observed not only by Russia but also by Ukraine – could be the first step, I repeat, toward long-term, stable peace, rather than a prelude to the continuation of armed conflict after the rearming and reorganization of the Ukrainian armed forces and the frantic digging of new trenches and strongholds.

🇺🇦 Our proposal, as they say, is on the table. The decision now lies with the Ukrainian authorities and their handlers, who, it seems, are driven by personal political ambitions rather than the interests of their people and who want to continue the war against Russia with the hands of Ukrainian nationalists.

🔴🔴 On May 9, the day of the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory, a solemn wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Hörnli Cemetery in Basel, at the mass grave of 23 Soviet soldiers – the only memorial in Switzerland dedicated to Red Army soldiers of the Great Patriotic War.

💐 Every year, we gratefully honor the memory of the four soldiers buried here who died while attempting to escape Nazi captivity. Only two of their names are known – Grigory Titov and Ivan Sumachev. The granite stela also bears the names of other Soviet soldiers who died from their wounds in Swiss hospitals during the years of that terrible war.

🤝 The ceremony was attended by representatives of the Embassy of Russia in Bern, Russian Permanent Mission of Russia to the UN Office in Geneva, the Consulate General of Russia in Geneva, the Russian Mission to the WTO, as well as the embassies of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan in Switzerland.

🎖 After the official part of the ceremony, hundreds of our compatriots – citizens of Russia and other CIS countries – gathered at the memorial, along with our good friends – residents of Switzerland, Germany, and France. Many came holding portraits of their relatives – veterans and home front workers.

✊ As every year, the march of compatriots was led by the “kings of the Swiss roads” – bikers from the Night Wolves club, who arrived from different European countries. They were joined by representatives of public organizations and many other individuals. On the Victory’s anniversary, members of the People's Front also made their way to Basel, bringing with them the Eternal Flame from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow.

🏅 The heroism of the soldiers of the Great Patriotic War is immortal. We remember and are endlessly proud – for they look at us through the eyes of our children!

🏅 Remarks by President of Russia, Supreme Commander-in-Chief, Vladimir Putin at a military parade marking the 80th Anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War (May 9, 2025)

💬 President Putin: Citizens of Russia, veterans, guests, comrade soldiers and sailors, sergeants and sergeant majors, midshipmen and warrant officers, comrade officers, generals and admirals!

I congratulate you on the 80th Anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War!

Today, we are all united by the feelings of joy and grief, pride and gratitude, and admiration for the generation that crushed Nazism and won freedom and peace for all humanity at the cost of millions of lives.

We faithfully preserve the memory of those historic, glorious events. As the heirs of the victors, today we celebrate Victory Day as the most important holiday for the country, which the entire nation, each family, each of us holds dear. <...>

We remember the lessons of WWII and will never agree with the distortion of those events or attempts to justify the murderers and slander the true victors.

Our duty is to defend the honour of the Red Army soldiers and commanders, and the heroism of fighters of different ethnic backgrounds who will forever remain Russian soldiers in world history.

❗️ Russia has been and will continue to be an indestructible obstacle to Nazism, Russophobia and anti-Semitism, and will stand in the way of the violence perpetrated by the champions of these aggressive and destructive ideas.

Truth and justice are on our side. The whole of Russia, our society and all people support the participants in the special military operation. We are proud of their courage and spirit, and their steely determination that has always brought us Victory.

The Soviet Union bore the brunt of the enemy’s most savage and relentless assaults. Millions of people, once devoted solely to peaceful labour, took up arms and stood firm to the death on every hill, bridgehead, and defensive line. The outcome of WWII was determined by decisive victories in major battles of Moscow and Stalingrad, on the Kursk Bulge and the Dnieper River, by the courage of the defenders of Belarus, who were the first to face the invader, by staunch resistance at the Brest Fortress and in Mogilev, Odessa, Sevastopol, Murmansk, Tula and Smolensk, by the heroism of the residents of besieged Leningrad. <...>

The contribution of the peoples of Central Asia and the South Caucasus was immense. From these regions came a steady flow of trains delivering everything the front needed. Hospitals were established, and hundreds of thousands of evacuees found a second home there. <...>

We honour every veteran of the Great Patriotic War and bow our heads in remembrance of all who gave their lives for Victory. <...>

We bow our heads before our fallen comrades-in-arms who laid down their lives as heroes in a righteous battle for Russia.

Nearly 80% of the world’s population were drawn into the fiery orbit of WWII.

The complete defeat of Nazi Germany, militarist Japan and their satellites around the world was achieved through the combined efforts of the Allied Nations.

☝️ We will never forget that the opening of the Second Front in Europe, which took place after the decisive battles in the territory of the Soviet Union, hastened Victory. We highly appreciate the contribution made to our common struggle by the Allied armies, members of the Resistance, the courageous people of China, and all those who fought for a peaceful future.

We will continue to look up to our veterans, taking example from their wholehearted love of the Motherland and commitment to defending our homeland and the values of humanism and justice. We will give these traditions and this great heritage the biggest place in our hearts and will pass them on to future generations.

We will always rely on our unity in battle and in peaceful endeavours, in striving for strategic goals and tackling problems for the benefit of Russia and its greatness and prosperity.

Glory to the victorious nation!

Happy Victory Day!

Hurrah!

🏅 On May 7, Russian Permanent Mission to the UN Office in Geneva joined the international "Garden of Memory” campaign. Its goal is to plant 27 million trees around the world – one for each of the 27 million Soviet soldiers and civilians who perished during the Great Patriotic War.

🌲 In honor of the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory, a Caucasian fir tree (Abies Nordmanniana) was planted on the grounds of our diplomatic mission – a symbol of remembrance and resilience of all the peoples of the USSR who defeated the great evil.

💬 As Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva, Ambassador Gennady Gatilov, noted in his opening speech:

🕯️ “It is our sacred duty to honor the memory of the fallen – soldiers, home front workers, all those who, through tremendous effort, brought the Victory closer. It is deeply symbolic that here, far from our Homeland, in Switzerland, we continue the tradition of planting a tree of memory – as a message to future generations and in gratitude to those who defended the freedom of Europe and the independence of our country.

🧧 Today, it is extremely important to preserve the historical truth. In Geneva, Russia continues its principled struggle against attempts to rewrite the history of World War II, and we will not allow the Victory of our heroic ancestors to be portrayed in a distorted light. We have like-minded partners – countries that share this understanding and stand for preserving the memory of the USSR’s role in defeating Nazi Germany.

🔴🔴 The planted Caucasian fir is a piece of our beloved Homeland. May it grow strong, reminding us of those terrible 1,418 days and nights of war, of the millions of lives laid down on the altar of Victory, of every family touched by that terrible tragedy, and of the heroic deeds that must never be forgotten.

🇷🇺 Let this tree stand as a living reminder: no one has the right to erase the memory of the Great Patriotic War”.

On May 7, Moscow welcomed the guests arriving to attend the Victory Day Parade. See how it happened
🎙 Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s remarks at a wreath-laying ceremony at the memorial plaques in the Foreign Ministry building (Moscow, May 6, 2025)

💬 These days, we are marking a great date, the 80th anniversary of the glorious Victory won by the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War.

Today, we, the Foreign Ministry staff, with the participation of our veterans and young employees, must make the oath to be eternally loyal to the gains, feats of valour, and heroism, which have guaranteed life to our state, to our common Motherland, the Soviet Union, and the future of rising generations.

In those years, many employees of the People’s Commissariat of Foreign Affairs and their colleagues from the People’s Commissariat of Foreign Trade left for the front and defended our capital and our Motherland along with Red Army troops and civilian volunteers. They made their contribution to the Great Victory. At the same time, the diplomats, who were filling in for them at the People’s Commissariat of Foreign Affairs, as well as their secret service and intelligence colleagues, ensured diplomatic and foreign policy support for the Soviet people’s heroic struggle to save Europe from Nazism. <...>

Throughout the war, the diplomats were doing what was necessary to preclude treason. Today, these documents have been declassified and published. They found out in due time that the British were in the lead of preparations for Operation Unthinkable. It was unthinkable indeed, implying as it did an attack on the Soviet Union with the aim (how familiar it sounds today) of inflicting a “strategic defeat” on it. That experience is invaluable for us now. <...>

Today, they have again rallied against us under the banners of Nazism (in the literal sense of the word) by supporting the openly racist, anti-Russian Zelensky regime that stages torch processions and throws troops with chevrons of Nazi divisions on their sleeves into the war’s meat-grinder. Like before Operation Unthinkable, they are threatening to inflict a “strategic defeat” on us on the battlefield.

🏅 It is important not only to cherish the memory of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War and #WWII, who have ensured our future and current development (development, I am sure, for long decades and centuries to come), but also to remember the diplomatic experience and lessons of those events. <...>

These days, 80 Eternal Flames are being lighted in our country for the first time. A tradition has been born to take a particle of the Eternal Flame in the Alexander Gardens in Moscow and bring it to someone’s small motherland. Not so long ago, residents of Lugansk did this, followed by a number of other cities. Symbolically, this happens soon after the Happy Easter, when particles of the Holy Fire from Jerusalem travel all over the world, with people celebrating Easter Sunday. For us, this Victory also means a resurrection of the whole of our people, of our history, traditions and pride. We are in duty bound to convey these feelings to our children and grandchildren as our mothers, fathers, grandmothers and grandfathers have conveyed them to us.

I want to congratulate the Foreign Ministry staff, the staff or our missions in the regions of the Russian Federation, at embassies and consulates on the upcoming holiday of Great Victory. My special greetings go to our veterans, who are, as usual, on station. They symbolise the generation bridge that has made it possible for us to survive and emerge strengthened from most different situations, including those linked to wars and diplomatic battles.

☝️ Everything is still ahead. No one has promised that all problems can be solved at one go. Life is requiring constant efforts.

I hope that our team that has repeatedly proven its mettle in most difficult situations will continue to implement with honour the foreign policy charted by President of Russia Vladimir Putin.

It is aimed at ensuring in an unconditional manner the Russian Federation’s legitimate, vital interests on the international scene.

🏅 On April 25, in Geneva, the halls of the Palais des Nations were filled with heartfelt songs of the war years – melodies that reach into the deepest corners of the soul of everyone who cherishes the memory of the Great Patriotic War.

🎶 The Gnessin Contemporary Choral Music Ensemble ALTRO CORO, under the direction of Maestro Alexander Ryzhinsky, performed the "Songs of the Great Victory" in one of the most renowned halls of the UN Office in Geneva — the Human Rights and Alliance of Civilizations Chamber. This was especially symbolic, as the very existence of the United Nations and its human rights bodies is largely owed to the heroic deed of the Soviet people, who defeated Nazi Germany and its allies.

🎼 "Katyusha," "Smuglyanka," "Oh, the Roads", "We Need One Victory" — these and many other immortal songs, performed by talented young artists, were heard by the leadership and staff of the UN Office and other international organizations based in Geneva, Permanent Representatives and diplomats from CIS countries and friendly states, as well as our compatriots and Swiss friends. Nearly all seats in one of the largest halls of the Palais des Nations were filled. After an incredibly heartfelt and masterful performance, the audience gave a standing ovation and did not want to let the artists leave the stage.

🤝 We sincerely thank the singers and leadership of the ALTRO CORO ensemble for a fantastic and unforgettable performance. Special thanks also go to the Director-General of the UN Office in Geneva, Tatiana Valovaya, and the head of the Russian House in Rome, Daria Pushkova, for their invaluable assistance in organizing this important event!

🚀 On April 12, 1961, at 9.07 am Moscow Time, the Vostok spacecraft with Yury Gagarin aboard made its historic lift-off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. This first manned space mission in the history of humankind heralded the beginning of the Space Age.

Yury #Gagarin was only 27 years old then. He had experienced various hardships earlier in life, spending his childhood years in his home town in Nazi-occupied territory during the Great Patriotic War. After the war, he joined the Saratov air club, for many years he trained hard to become a professional pilot. Gagarin eventually joined the first Soviet cosmonaut squad.

On that memorable April morning, he was preparing to take off into the unknown where no human being had ever been before. A photographer took images of the cosmonaut’s face before the flight. Gagarin showed absolutely no fear, flashing his famous smile and concentrating on his responsible assignment.

🧑‍🚀 Yury Gagarin spent 108 minutes in outer space, orbited the Earth and successfully landed near the village of Smelovka in the Saratov Region.

While in orbit, he maintained radio contact with Earth, conducted observations through a porthole, controlled the operation of the spacecraft’s systems and made a few experiments.

📰 The media widely announced Yury Gagarin’s mission 55 minutes after the Vostok rocket lifted off. It became the most quoted news story worldwide. Instantly, a Soviet pilot & cosmonaut became the most famous person on Earth.

Two days later, the residents of the Soviet capital took to the streets, carrying flowers and posters that welcomed Gagarin who had arrived in Moscow. In late April, the first man in space went on a global tour to share his impressions with people all over the world.

🌐 In the next two years following this history-making event, Yury Gagarin visited over 30 countries where he was given a hero’s welcome. His tour was unofficially named the Peace Mission. Despite his immense popularity, Gagarin remained his own usual self and continued to engage in what he liked most – aviation and cosmonautics – for the rest of his life.

🕊 #MartyrsForTruth is a special project dedicated to commemorating Russian journalists who lost their lives at the hands of Ukrainian neo-Nazis.

Since 2014, the Kiev regime has been responsible for the deaths of more than 60 individuals working in Russian media — correspondents, cameramen, sound engineers, bloggers, and volunteers. Many of them were killed not just in combat zones but also far from the front lines — in cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg — through planned and targeted terrorist attacks.

#KievRegimeCrimes

The Kiev regime has tortured and murdered those who dared to speak out against the neo-Nazi junta and expose its crimes. Among the victims were Ukrainian journalist Oles Buzina and Gonzalo Lira Lopez, a US citizen.

❗️Today, on #WorldPressFreedomDay, we pay tribute to those who stood up for the truth and remained committed to their professional duty — right to the end.

▪️ Darya Dugina (1992–2022) was a political analyst, philosopher, and frontline reporter. The daughter of philosopher and writer Alexander Dugin, Darya was killed in a terrorist attack on August 20, 2022. According to investigators, an agent of the Ukrainian special services planted an explosive device under her vehicle and detonated it remotely after several months of surveillance.

▪️ Anna Prokofyeva (1989–2025) was a frontline reporter with Channel One Russia in the Belgorod Region. On March 26, 2025, the vehicle carrying her crew hit a landmine near the Ukrainian border. Anna was killed instantly; the cameraman sustained serious injuries.

▪️ Andrey Stenin (1980–2014), a photo journalist with the Rossiya Segodnya Media Group, died on August 6, 2014, on his way from Dmitrovka to Snezhny in the Donetsk People’s Republic, together with Andrey Vyachalo and Sergey Korenchenkov. These journalists were reporting on the latest developments in and around Snezny. Their burnt-out vehicle was discovered only on August 22,with the remains of Andrey and his colleagues in it. Investigators later confirmed it had come under Ukrainian military fire.

▪️ Maxim Fomin, known as Vladlen Tatarsky, was a journalist, blogger, and militia member. He died in a terrorist attack on April 2, 2023, in St. Petersburg. According to investigators, this attack had been in the making since 2022 and was masterminded from Ukraine. Daria Trepova carried it out by bringing an explosive device hidden inside a gypsum sculpture to a meet-the-author event with Tatarsky. Tatarsky was killed instantly, and 30 others were injured. Trepova has since been sentenced to 27 years in prison.

▪️ And the list continues…

The exhibition is created under the joint efforts of the Donetsk News Agency, Zaporozhye News Agency, Kherson News Agency, and the Lugansk Information Centre, in collaboration with Alexander Malkevich, a member of Russia’s Human Rights Council, with the support of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The initiative has also launched several international exhibitions, hosted by Russian diplomatic missions abroad.

Hurrah!

❗ On April 25, students and teachers of the School at the Russian Permanent Mission in Geneva, along with the staff of our diplomatic mission and their families, ceremoniously planted a blue spruce (Picea pungens) on the grounds of our compound in honor of the 80th anniversary of the United Nations.

🇺🇳 The date was not chosen by chance: exactly 80 years ago, the San Francisco Conference began its work, which, after long and painstaking efforts, led to the "birth" of the UN and the signing of its Charter. This was made possible only thanks to the Victory in the Second World War, achieved at the cost of immense sacrifices and the decisive contribution of the Soviet Union to the defeat of Nazi Germany. Without this Victory, without the heroism of the Soviet people, there would have been neither peace nor the United Nations itself.

🕊️ Today’s ceremony became a symbol of remembrance, continuity, and hope for the future. The blue spruce is not only one of the most majestic and long-living trees, but it also represents peace, resilience, and unity. Like this tree, the UN has for 80 years safeguarded international law, promoted cooperation among nations, and protected the world from global conflicts.

💬 Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva, Ambassador Gennady Gatilov, noted in his welcoming speech:
🌲 "Our spruce is a young tree, but I am confident that over the years it will grow and reach for the sky – just as the UN will continue to develop, and the principles on which international relations are built today will continue to strengthen".

🕯 May 2 marks 11 years since the tragedy in Odessa.

On that day, the Euromaidan supporters, ultra radicals and outright Neo-Nazis committed atrocities against those who openly opposed the anti-constitutional government coup in Kiev perpetrated by nationalists, at the behest and with the support from their the western sponsors.

This atrocity must not be forgotten or swept under the rug: we shan't let the world forget what happened on 2 May 2014 in Odessa.

👉 A detailed reconstruction & retrospective of the events of that day and the ensuing tragedy.

According to official statistics alone, at least 48 people died during these tragic events, including 42 who were killed or burned alive at the Trade Unions House, as well as another six who perished during the clashes on the streets of Odessa.

In fact, the Kiev regime and its pet cronies has repeated — to the letter — what the Bandera torturers did 80 years ago in Khatyn.

❗️ Although many perpetrators have been identified, they have not received the punishment they deserve.

The West remains silent regarding these bloody crimes of the Ukrainian neo-Nazis, the Kiev regime, which to this day continues to use terrorist methods.

Comment by Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on the 10th anniversary of the tragedy in Odessa of May 2, 2024.
Maria Zakharova:
Today, as we pay tribute to the victims of the bloody reprisals in Odessa, we have no doubt that sooner or later those who perpetrated and inspired this barbaric crime, which has no statute of limitations, will have to face the punishment they deserve.
