NEW EPISODE — The Bog — Folkism w/ Kyle Davis
https://hearthfireradio.com/watch?v=NPkbcHFL
Folkism—or folkishness—is starting to eclipse universalism as a paradigm for paganism. This just means that paganism is becoming more historically accurate because there never was a historical universalist paganism. But what exactly does folkism mean? What does it demand of us? The Boglords ask Kyle Davis of the Norroena Society, and get some enlightening answers.

Priesthood in the Indo-European Tradition & the Anglo-Saxon Polytheistic Revival.
Part 11
The closest etymological link to the Flamen comes in the form of Proto-Germanic “Blōtanan.” You read that right, Proto-Germanic. Blōtanan is a verb meaning “to Sacrifice,” and is related to the word “Blót.” A looser connection has been made to the Hindu Brahmin, but most linguists dismiss this.
To become a Flamen was not a simple task, and was a coveted position for its prestige in the Roman Republic. The highest position (Flamen Dialis, the priest of Jupiter) would be selected by the Pontifex Maximus (High Priest) personally. The man and his wife would both be under scrutiny. Once selected they would perform a ritual with an Augur (priest responsible for divination). Without the Augur’s blessing the position would not be filled, reflecting what Tacitus observed of the Germanic peoples back onto the Romans; “Augury and divination by lot no people practice more diligently.”

Priesthood in the Indo-European Tradition & the Anglo-Saxon Polytheistic Revival.
Part 2
One absolute certainty we have in regards to our revered ancestors tradition is that our folk had a Priesthood. This Priesthood was very powerful. Tacitus states (in Germania);
“But to reprimand, to imprison, even to flog, is permitted to the priests alone, and that not as a punishment, or at the general's bidding, but, as it were, by the mandate of the god whom they believe to inspire the warrior.”
They were deeply respected by our Germanic ancestors, to the point where in the Thing;
“Silence is proclaimed by the priests, who have on these occasions the right of keeping order.”

Phase 0 - Pre-Runic
The Negau B helmet suggests the presence of a Germanic goði in a Celtic religious setting during the pre-runic phase. Its northern Etruscan inscription, likely from 350–300 BC, reads Harigasti teiwa (“Harigast, priest of Teiwaz”). Originally an Etruscan design (500–450 BCE), the helmet was later repurposed for ritual use and buried around 50 BCE in Noricum along with Celtic-inscribed helmets with religious titles, which further suggests shared ritual practices.
Theories link this to Suebi-Noricum interactions, which explains a Germanic goði in a Celtic area. The inscription possibly confirms the Germanics introduced written script to the Celtic & Etruscan peoples.

Tomorrow is Krampusnacht!
Krampus, the "Christmas Devil," is a figure from Alpine folklore who contrasts the cheerful St. Nicholas. His origins trace back to pre-Christian Germanic traditions, where he was believed to ward off evil spirits during the winter solstice. Over time, Krampus became part of Christian customs, symbolizing discipline and consequences.
On Krampusnacht (December 5th), people dressed as Krampus parade through towns, scaring onlookers with elaborate costumes and masks. In some traditions, Krampus visits homes alongside St. Nicholas—punishing naughty children while Nicholas rewards the well-behaved.
Krampus is more than just a frightful figure; he’s a reflection of the old-world belief in balance—where every gift comes with responsibility, and every celebration acknowledges the shadows that give the light its meaning. Whether you embrace him as a symbol of folklore or a festive thrill, Krampus keeps the holidays interesting.
What Krampus traditions have you celebrated?

Priesthood in the Indo-European Tradition & the Anglo-Saxon Polytheistic Revival.
Part 9
It should be said that this is the account of a general opposed to the Celtic peoples. However his account of the Druids does not seem to be as inflammatory as later Roman authors, who were actively targeting the Druids with political motive to destroy them. In this they were successful, as they were wiped out by the Legions on the island of Mona (modern day Anglesey).
But what of the Roman priesthood? This is far better documented when compared to the Celts (or the Germanic peoples for that matter), so more can be said for certain regarding them. It certainly evolved over time, so I will try to stick to the older religious institutions, as this will have have more in common with our own Germanic religious structures.

“Ragnhildr placed this stone in memory of Alli the Pale, Guþi of the sanctuary, honourable Þegn of the retinue.”
~Inscription from the Glavendrup stone.
There is a large number of Neo-pagan’s today that flat-out refuse to acknowledge any hierarchy or authority from a religious perspective. It is safe to say that this is nothing short of anti-Christian, liberal reactionary behaviour, not even slightly based off of actual authentic polytheistic religious practice. This is especially prevalent in Heathen circles, where it has become rather pathological to reject any form of standards being placed on our religious revival. This is the most damaging approach anyone can take to reestablishing our ancient religion, some would say Logisc in nature.

“Where ignorance is bliss, ’tis folly to be wise.” This saying speaks to the comfort of blindness, but comfort has cost us clarity. In choosing ease over awareness, we’ve strayed, weakened, and lost our roots and way.
Ignorance cannot be our refuge. Wisdom calls us back to the strength of our forbears - strength built on lore, law, ritual, and kinship. These are not relics, but guides, grounding us in braveness, righteousness, connection, and uprightness. Together, they form the foundation of our path and a way of strength and purpose.
Reclaiming our legacy won’t be easy, but it’s everything. This path demands conviction, braveness, and the rejection of deceit and greed. Choose strength over ease, wisdom over ignorance, and the duty to protect and pass on our way of life. For this, we will endure. For this, we will remember and be remembered.

In the early ages of antiquity, there came a great teacher to our folk, granting us culture & organizing our societies. He taught us how to hunt, weave, build, & farm. He taught our first kings the ways of the Gods & how we are to live good lives; from this came the law, the Æfinrúnar, the "Runes of Earthly Life," which combines our rituals & legal institutions. So that the rites could retain their unique status within the religion, we’ve named this work, the Æfinlǫgr "Laws of Earthly Life;” thus, maintaining the connection to the original concept.
This Æfinlǫgr is an attempt to reconstruct the ancient Teutonic law, by examining every legal text contained within the records, looking for commonalities within each code & within our lore, then developing a code we can follow today. This is yet another part of the chain, the next link in reforging our connection to our ancestral tradition. May the Gods shine upon us as we restore order to our once great nations!

Tonight is the full moon of Blot month. Bede says the English traditionally sacrificed cattle to the gods at this time but he didn't say which ones.
Professor Richard North argues that Bede's use of the Latin vanis is a rendering of the Old English cognate of 'Vanir' which would be Waene. Not everyone agrees with him but if you do then it is a time to blot to Ingui Frey, Easter/Freyja etc.
The importance of sacrifice at this time of year continued long after Christianisation in the form of St Martin's day. In France the taking of vows in the woods or at sacred spring on St Martin's day was banned in 578 AD. In Ireland people were still sprinkling sacrificial blood in their house on St Martin's day as recently as the 20th century!

Part 8
With this said, what do we know of the Druids; the priests, oracles, and lore keepers of our ancient Celtic neighbours? Julius Caesar’s account makes it abundantly clear that the Druids were the prominent social group in their societies (alongside the Nobility). He claimed that they were responsible for community worship, divination & dispensation of justice. They had an oral tradition, despite having a written language (again according to Caesar’s account, using Greek letters). This is speculation, but to not write down your sacred lore despite being literate indicates a deliberate aversion to doing so. The tradition of passing down this lore vocally instead of in scripture would take up to 20 years to learn.

The Hamarvíg
The Hammer Sign, sometimes known in Old Norse as the Hamarsigna, is a simple ritual to make items holy, using either a ceremonial hammer or your fist. Now, “signa” is s a Latin-derived word, so Hamarvíg would be more appropriate (in keeping with the Old Norse). This practice is used to bless sacrificial items & during Sumbl ritual. In our Tradition, Þunor/Þórr’s hammer has been used to bless funeral pyres, weddings, & runestones, et al; showing its power in making things sacred. To perform the Hammer Sign, touch your forehead, chest, left shoulder, and right shoulder in sequence, forming the shape of a hammer. Finish by saying, “Þórr vigja!”, which means “Thor consecrate!” This ritual calls upon Þunor/Þórr’s power to bless & protect.
In the Anglo-Saxon Folcsidish tradition, we might refer to it as the Hamorblétsing, or Hammer Blessing, & when finishing the rite, we call out, “Þunor blétsa!”

Part 12
The wife being scrutinised was not a random act. In fact a requirement to be considered for the position of Flamen was to be married. Both had to come from Patrician families (Nobility). The woman had to be a virgin and unwed prior to this. The wife would hold the title of Flaminica, and would be expected to take part in her husbands duties. This marriage could only be separated by death, as they were considered the property of the Deity they were the representative of.
A Flamen had the authority to pardon a convicted criminal, and most poignantly they were one of the few people in Roman society to be immune to the Patria Potestas (power of the father). A serving consul (the rulers of the Roman Republic) was once put to death by his own father under this law. A Flamen also had prohibitions upon him, including a need to be ritually clean by avoiding contact with a corpse.

Great news, Hearthfire has reached its goal of subscriptions! One month ahead of schedule.
We are now officially "in the black", so this bird is going to fly. Hearthfire Radio will be around for a long time to come.
This month we will announce the completely redesigned site, probably quite soon. Our boys have been hard at work on this and the wait will be worth it.
We appreciate all of our subscribers for hanging in there while we finish up the site. You have all made this possible. This is a big step for heathenry, and proof of concept. Teething problems aside, we have proven that we can build our own platform and that the support is there to keep it going. This is a big win for everyone, so THANK YOU.
