Christ Offered Himself Without Blemish To God

From the beginning of the book of Hebrews, the Lord Jesus Christ is elevated above every prophet of God and all angelic beings. He is of greater importance than Moses the Law~giver, and Joshua, who led the children of Israel into the promised land. The Lord Jesus is far higher in rank and authority than Aaron the first high priest of Israel, and His ministry eclipses the Levitical priesthood.

And here in chapter 9, we read that Christ's offering of Himself is far superior to the Old Testament sacrifices, and cannot be compared with the ashes of a red heifer, or the blood of bulls and goats, which.. for a season, covered the sins of the nation, or which removed them temporarily from defilement ~ until that day when the perfect Lamb of God would come to earth, and take away the sin of the world.

In former times, an annual atonement was made for the sin of the nation, where the blood of animals covered the sin of the people for a single year.  And yet through the sacrifice of His life, Christ Jesus obtained eternal redemption, the forgiveness of sins, and life everlasting for all who would believe in Him.

In the book of Numbers, we discover WHY the ashes of a red heifer were highly prized. They were used to remove a person's defilement, if they came in contact with a dead body. The young animal was slaughtered outside the camp, and its blood was sprinkled seven times in front of the tabernacle. Only then was the body of the red heifer burned to ashes.

The ashes were ceremoniously gathered up and carefully stored for multiple future cleansings. Only a tiny quantity of ash was required each time to cleanse the defiled Israelite, and the cherished cinders could last for many decades. Indeed, some sources say that only six such red heifers were required, during Israel's entire, pre~Cross history.

However, the extra~special cleansing effect of these special ashes, and the value that was placed upon them, cannot be compared with the efficacy of Christ's atoning blood, for we read, "if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh ~ how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works, to serve the living God?"

Christ's offering of Himself was through the eternal Spirit. He willingly offered His life as the full ransom price for the sin of the world, through the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit of God. In former times the animals, which were a type of Christ, had to be without physical imperfection ~ but for our sake, Christ lived and died without any moral blemish, for the glory of God and for our permanent and eternal salvation.

Our sins are not merely covered for a season nor are we only cleansed outwardly through His blood. We are cleansed inwardly and we are cleansed forever. Our hearts are made new. Our consciences are cleansed and purified by the shed blood of the perfect Lamb of God, and we are covered in Christ's righteousness, forever.

By faith, we are freed from slavery to sin, and delivered from a nagging need to carry out 'dead works' of the flesh, in an attempt to justify ourselves, cover our own confusion, cleanse ourselves from our own unrighteousness, and appease our sin~offended God. Rather, we are enabled to work the works of righteousness and do the good works of the spirit through the power of the Holy Spirit ~ good works which God Himself has prepared for all who have trusted Christ for the salvation of their soul.

May we never ever minimise the incredible sacrifice that Jesus made on our account, and the tremendous power that the blood of Christ has in the lives of all who trust in His redemptive work.

May we never diminish the inconceivable sacrifice the Lord Jesus gave, when He left His home in glory, made Himself a little lower than the angels on our account, and clothed Himself in mortal flesh, so that by the willing sacrifice of His sinless life..

Ephesians Chapter 4
Session 6
4 Surely He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
5 But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

Isaiah 53:4-6
We should be living our lives in the power of the resurrection, because it has happened. It has entitled us to that position in authority.

Be Still & Wait On The Lord

These words of David have been of great comfort to many who have been overwhelmed by the fights and fancies of evildoers who, in comparison with godly man, seem to prosper in the ways of the world. These evildoers can excite envy from those that are seeking to walk in spirit and truth. But we are reminded not to fret or to become perturbed by the actions and attitudes of the wicked who seem to prosper in their wicked ways, for they shall receive their just desserts. Indeed, their apparent successes in life are but a flash in the pan of eternity, for they are like the grass which will soon be nothing more than a fleeting shadow.

The godly are called to trust in the Lord and to hold fast to the faith once offered to the saints, for our hope is in Christ. The believer is called upon to delight in the things of God, for those are the qualities of life that have everlasting joy, eternal purpose, and heavenly rewards. We are to maintain our faith in the power and promises of God, for He will vindicate all His children and His justice will shine as brightly as the noonday sun.

We are to be still in His presence and to patiently wait for the Lord to act on our behalf.

Being still in the presence of God is not a sulky silence or hushed murmuring, but is simply resting in Him, trusting in His Word of truth, abiding in His love, and being content to await His timing. It is to possess a purposeful patience and not to display a glum resignation. When we are quietly resting in His presence and secure in the hope that is set before us, the peace of God which passes understanding will flood the heart and soul of all who walk godly in Christ Jesus.

Let us daily be still in the presence of the LORD as we wait patiently for Him to act. Let us not worry about evil people who prosper nor fret about their wicked schemes for they will eventually be cut off. Indeed, the LORD rescuing the godly from the wicked in His own time and His own way.

So be still in the presence of the LORD, and wait patiently for Him to act.

God bless you all.

A Broken & A Contrite Heart

Blessed are the poor in spirit for it is only the heart that is broken before the Lord and truly humbled under a deep conviction of one's own unworthiness before a holy and righteous God, that a man or woman of faith can offer to the Lord the sacrifice of a broken heart ~ a living sacrifice, worthy of His acceptance.

It was David who wrote this psalm, and he was a man who loved the Lord and made many sacrificial offerings to Him. But David knew that the blood of bulls and goats was not the thing that pleased the Lord, but a heart that is broken before Him ~ a heart that is contrite and truly repentant. "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit. A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise."

It is only the soul who, through the Spirit's convicting work, is bereft of its own self~importance and which is smitten in genuine repentance of sin, that can offer the sacrifice of a broken and contrite spirit, which is so acceptable and pleasing to the heart of God.

David knew the darkness of his own heart. He knew he was a sinner who could not cleanse his own soul, which is why he prayed that God would create in him a clean heart, and renew a steadfast spirit within him. David knew his own broken fellowship with the Lord was the result of his own sin. He knew that only God could cleanse him and wash his soul whiter than snow. Joy and gladness in the Lord can only be restored in the one with a broken spirit and contrite heart.

Such lowliness of spirit proceeds from a heart of faith, which is looking to Christ as Advocate. It is only through Him that God's mercy, forgiveness, kindness and grace will wash away every scarlet~stain that clings to our sin~encrusted soul, when offered in brokenness of heart and true contriteness of spirit.

This verse not only refers to our initial justification, where the manifold sins of an unsaved man or woman are forgiven. It also refers to the crushing weight of a believer's post~salvation sins. The sacrifice of God is the broken spirit and contrite heart of the believer who desires to die to self and live godly in Christ Jesus.

Our union with our God can never be broken, but our fellowship with Him and our daily communion can be severed when the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life causes us to stray from the path of righteousness into the destructive dead~end of sin. It is the sacrifice about which David wrote that returns us into sweet fellowship with our Father in heaven.

Unlike David, Church~age believers need never be concerned that the Holy Spirit will be taken from us, for He took up permanent residence in our heart the moment we trusted Christ for salvation and He will NEVER leave us nor forsake us, even when we sin. But we can grieve the Spirit of God by our words and actions and we can quench the work He desires to carry out in our lives, when we are not looking to Jesus, and walking in humbleness of spirit and dependence on our Father in heaven.

When David recognised his own lustful sin, he offered his own sacrifice of a broken spirit and a contrite heart, and like David, we know that God will not despise such an acceptable sacrifice. But like David, we too must approach the throne of grace in brokenness of heart and contrition of spirit, for such is well~pleasing and acceptable to our holy God.

God bless you all.

God can do more with a broken man than with one who seems strong in his own strength and power.

THE POWER OF SCRIPTURE

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword. . and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
HEBREWS 4:12

The Word of God gives us great help in attaining the peace we need. It is living, very lively and active in seizing the conscience of the sinner, in cutting him to the heart, and in comforting him and binding up the wounds of the soul. It is powerful. It convinces powerfully, converts powerfully, and comforts powerfully. It is powerful enough to batter down Satan's kingdom and set up the kingdom of Christ upon the ruins. It is sharper than any two-edged sword. It will enter where no other sword can and make a more critical dissection. It pierces to the dividing asunder of the soul and the spirit, the soul and its habitual prevailing temper. It makes a soul that has been proud for a long time humble, a soul that has been perverse meek and obedient.
This sword divides between the joints and the marrow. It can make men willing to undergo the sharpest operation for the mortifying of sin. It is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. The Word will turn the sinner inside out and let him see all that is in his heart.

Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Let not the mighty man glory in his might, Nor let the rich man glory in his riches; But let him who glories glory in this, That he understands and knows Me, That I am the Lord, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight,” says the Lord.
