Southern Citizens Call for “Day of Return” to Reclaim Land from Israeli Occupation

Citizens of occupied border villages called for a “Day of Return” on Tuesday to reclaim the remaining parts of their land from Israeli occupation. They have urged people from all regions of Lebanon to join the movement and head to the borders to reclaim the land.

The citizens, in their “Return - 4” call, condemned the Israeli delays in withdrawing from occupied villages under clear US support, highlighting Israel’s attempts to extend their occupation beyond the agreed deadline. Despite signaling an eventual withdrawal, Israel has been constructing military sites on five hills in the region, undermining any potential withdrawal.

The citizens stated: “ How would they stay while their presence threatens all of Lebanon, from its airports to its valleys, to its northern borders, to every point through its ongoing airstrikes.”

Lebanese Calls for Opening Qleyaat Airport

The call for reopening Qleyaat Airport has resurfaced following recent incidents on Beirut Airport Road, including Israeli threats to an Iranian plane carrying Lebanese citizens and an attack on a UNIFIL convoy.

MP Gebran Bassil emphasized the need for additional specialized airports, including Qleyaat, Hammat, and Rayak, to promote tourism, economic development, and regional growth. He advocated for an open skies policy and ending MEA’s monopoly to reduce ticket prices for both tourists and Lebanese.

MP Walid Baarini stressed the importance of opening Qleyaat airport and securing full Lebanese control in the area to avoid recurring incidents, while MP Ziad Hawat highlighted the importance of the airport road and called for airports in Qleyaat and Hammat to be open.

Meanwhile, MP Ashraf Rifi called on the government to prioritize opening Qleyaat Airport, stressing the significant economic benefits it will have on all the people of the north and Lebanon.

The Progressive Socialist Party:

- The actions witnessed in the past two days, including road blockages, are unacceptable and unjustified, regardless of the reasons. These actions do not serve the necessary progress for the country.

- The new phase that began with the election of the president and the formation of the new government requires effective and positive contributions from everyone to give the country and its citizens the opportunity they deserve.

- We urge all political forces to take responsibility for ensuring internal stability, preventing disruption of security, and giving the country the time it needs for recovery and reconstruction.
We have made significant progress over the past few months and I am confident that the Lebanese army will control all population centers in the South Litani area before next Tuesday.

It is important to remember that the cessation of hostilities arrangements contain many components in the 13 paragraphs and we will continue to help implement all of these principles even after February 18.

• The healthy condition of Israeli captives demonstrates our moral commitment, while the occupation continues to commit severe violations against our detainees.

• The handover, conducted in front of a platform featuring the images of our martyred leaders, including al-Deif, symbolizes a pledge of loyalty, confirming that al-Qassam fighters remain resolute.
Prisoners’ media office of Hamas released a statement citing testimonies from released prisoners. It stated, “captives revealed the extent of crimes they suffered before their release, as they were subjected to severe beatings for consecutive days on the hands of prison guards, resulting in rib fractures for some of them."

The office warned of "unprecedented" abuse since October 7, including "physical and psychological torture, systematic starvation, and deliberate medical neglect, leading to the spread of diseases, including scabies, among the prisoners." It added that some captives were hospitalized immediately after release, proving the "monstrous torture methods that violate all international laws and conventions regarding prisoners' rights."

It concluded that the treatment of Palestinian prisoners “amounts to war crimes and crimes against humanity," urging international intervention to stop these violations and hold those responsible accountable.

📌 US Sanctions on Iranian Oil

On the eve of his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, former US President Donald Trump reactivated his "maximum pressure" policy against Iran, a strategy he had previously pursued during his first term. Trump directed the Treasury Department to intensify sanctions on Iranian oil sales in an attempt to reduce Tehran's exports to zero, citing allegations that Iran was seeking to develop nuclear weapons. While signing a memorandum to enforce these measures, Trump expressed what he claimed was "reluctance" about doing so, stating, "So I'm signing this, and I'm unhappy to do it, but I really have not much of a choice, because we have to be strong and firm, and I hope that it's not going to have to be used in any great measure at all. It'd be great if we could have a Middle East and maybe a world at total peace" He further claimed that Iran was "very close" to obtaining a nuclear weapon but insisted that "under no circumstances" could it be allowed to do so, asserting that the US had the "right" to prevent Iranian oil sales to other countries.

Trump also expressed his willingness to engage in talks with his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian, in an effort to persuade Tehran to abandon its nuclear ambitions. Last month, on September 24, Trump expressed hope for a nuclear deal with Iran when asked whether he would support Israel striking Iranian nuclear facilities. At the time, he responded that hopefully, an agreement will be reached, adding that if they don’t make a deal, it’s fine too. When pressed by reporters about the US Justice Department’s announcement in November regarding an alleged Iranian plot to assassinate him before the presidential elections, Trump stated, “I’ve left instructions if they do it, they get obliterated, there won’t be anything left.”

Trump’s move last night aligns with previous leaks in US media suggesting he had prioritized imposing sanctions on Iran, including secondary sanctions on major buyers of Iranian oil, such as China. While signing the executive order, his aide clarified that the memorandum tasked every department in the US administration with formulating sanctions on Iran, particularly concerning its nuclear activities. He added that this would grant Trump "every possible tool" to prevent Iran from becoming a "malign actor."
