The phone call between Putin and Trump regarding Ukraine lasted for 2 hours and 5 minutes. The length of the call, as well as the subsequent statements by Putin, Trump, et al, indicate that this particular interaction between the two leaders maintained its focus on a constructive agenda. For example, Trump's social media post did not mention additional sanctions, which were being suggested recently. This is not what the pro-war party in the West, as represented by France, Germany, the UK, and others, as well as Zelensky, wanted.

According to Putin, he argued his case the way Russia has been consistently arguing its case for a while: a long-term peace agreement is to be drafted first as a memorandum with a set of specific dates, guarantees, guarantors, and other conditions to be met, followed by a ceasefire.

Thus, continuing to operate in the battlefield--for Russia--is one way to put pressure on the opposing side to arrive at a reasonable agreement.

Kiev is preparing ITS OWN POLITICAL PRISONERS for an exchange with Russia, media reports.

Kiev has been pulling out political prisoners from its detention centers and allegedly forcing them to sign the necessary documents for such an exchange.

Some of the political prisoners may indeed be Russian citizens, such as the ones essentially taken hostage out of Kursk. Others, however, are Ukrainian citizens detained or arrested on trumped-up charges (these days, there are thousands of those in Ukraine). The latter obviously have roots and families in the Ukrainian territory, which would make dumping them in Russia a massive life change.

Be that as it may, it's remarkable that Kiev seems to be planning to exchange its own citizens for its own citizens. Only the ones Kiev plans to essentially deport have been pesky--disagreeing with its destructive politics--while the soldiers it'll get back will be ready to fight.

That Russia’s negotiating position in Istanbul in 2025 is different from the 2022 counterpart should be surprising to no one.

The original negotiations that were allegedly undermined by Boris Johnson and Co. were beneficial to Ukraine in comparison to Russia’s current demands, reflecting battlefield and economic realities. Back then, Russia wanted Ukraine to leave only two regions (the breakaway Donetsk and Lugansk republics), whereas today it’s four regions including Kherson and Zaporozhie (and counting?).

That Ukraine wouldn’t agree to these conditions shouldn’t be surprising to anyone either: their so-called leadership spent three years losing territory and men, a lot of men, in the battlefield (on top of emigration). Thus, continuing the war is not only something that a certain segment of the Western elites (as represented by e.g. the EU and the UK) seeks—it also benefits the Ukrainian so-called leadership by providing them with plausible deniability on top of all the other individual benefits they received as a result of this war.

But neither Ukraine’s troops, nor their soldiers’ motivation, nor the supplies and Western support are infinite. Therefore, Kiev pushed itself into an impossible situation in which all outcomes are detrimental for its side.

You thought the UK criminalization of wrongthink on the Internet was bad? In Estonia, they fine users 600 euros or more for certain social media posts. This woman was fined for having e.g. the St. George ribbon *in a comment* on someone else’s page. (But, according to the EU authorities, she’s an ethnic Russian, so it’s perfectly acceptable.)

Some analysts believe that Zelensky demanding direct talks with Putin is a good “PR move” or a “power move,” especially if Putin doesn’t show up in Turkey. But wars aren’t won on PR (alone), and, Ukraine doesn’t have an endless supply of motivated soldiers, as its multiple waves of forced mobilizations and close borders indicate.

They also say that Russia will be sanctioned for its potential unwillingness to negotiate with Zelensky, as several Western politicians indicated. But Russia is already under tens of thousands of sanctions, and it’s unlikely that a few more sanctions would play a pivotal role here.

From the Russian perspective, the 30-day ceasefire proposed by the Western officialdom is simply another chance to rearm and prepare Ukraine for more fighting, not unlike the way in which the Minsk agreements were used. This is obviously completely contrary to any lasting peace in the region, and the trustworthiness of any such proposal is nearly nonexistent.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry: “Putin said it very clearly: negotiations about the initial reasons [for the war] first, then a conversation about a ceasefire.”Indeed, Putin had been consistent in suggesting that the genesis of the war, such as NATO expansion, must be acknowledged by Ukraine’s backers, even before the 2022 escalation (which has been deliberately ignored).

Finally, Ukraine hasn’t been a sovereign decision-maker since 2014 in any shape or form. Pretending like Zelensky has any major say in these negotiations, or that he cares about the fate of Ukraine, per se, is akin to the Emperor’s new clothes. The second Ukraine’s—and Zelensky’s—backers pull their funding, the war stops, and Ukraine finally faces its status as a failed state. Thus, any real peace negotiations should, once again, involve the actual power players from the Western side, rather than Zelensky’s “PR moves.”

How much does it cost to avoid mobilization in Ukraine?

Public figure and a former member of Zelensky’s party, Alexander Dubinsky, published the rates:

Kiev: $5,000
Krivoy Rog: $5,000-8,000*
Odessa: $5,000
Mukachevo: $7,000
Kharkov: $5,000

*The higher amount includes being removed from the list altogether. These amounts are quite large for a country with an average monthly salary of approximately $500. Obviously, only the privileged can avoid the frontlines.

Dubinsky compares Zelensky’s enforcers in the Territorial Center of Recruitment and Social Support and border controls to Gestapo and notes that earlier in, it cost $5,000 to leave Ukraine, but now the borders are essentially closed.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico considers ridiculous Zelensky's alleged threats targeting foreign leaders who will travel to Moscow for Victory Day (80th anniversary of WWII’s end in Europe). The Slovak politician said the following at a press conference he just held, "This is unprecedented. I think it's ridiculous. I reject such threats.”

It’s doubtful that a man who survived an assassination attempt would cave to Zelensky’s infantile and brazen statements that some would consider threats of terrorism.
