Just watched “The Last Dance”. An ESPN Documentary on the Chicago Bulls 1998 season.
Let’s take a trip back to the 90’s.
The Chicago Bulls are dominating the NBA. Winning Championships in 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, & 1998.
One could make the argument that had Jordan not “retired” for 2 seasons, they would have won in 1994 & 1995 as well.
Their core was amongst the best the NBA has ever seen. Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, and of course they were led by arguably the best coach in NBA history - Phil Jackson.
1998 rolls around, and Jerry Krause’s ego and “better than you” attitude left the Bulls in a position where the resentment which had built because of him caused the team to fall apart. At one point, he and Phil Jackson were even best friends. However, by 1998, their relationship was fractured beyond repair.
Krause spent years jerking these guys around and undervaluing them - Especially Jackson & Pippen. Krause made the decision to not give Jackson a new contract, believing that guys like Jordan, Pippen, and Rodman would choose the team over Jackson. He was wrong.
As such, none of those guys were going to be returning the following year. And all of them gave the same reason: Krause. They won the Championship that season *in spite* of Krause.
Afterwards, Pippen left. Jordan retired. Jackson left, and Rodman left.
Overnight, the team had become a shell of itself.
Meanwhile Krause took no accountability for his actions that led to the breakup of one of the most legendary dynasties in basketball history. As a matter of fact, Krause then began to attack all of those players, and Jackson. Blaming all of them for the implosion rather than looking in the mirror. The dude was legitimately a master class in gaslighting and blame-shifting.
