What Is Futurism: The Ideology of the Future
Futurism was a political ideology focused on revolution through speed, technology, and national vitality. Emerging in early 20th-century Italy, it aimed to destroy traditional society and replace it with one driven by innovation, modernism and progress. Founded by Filippo Marinetti in 1909, it championed war, industrialism, Modernity, and the machine, believing these forces would revitalize the nation.
Central to Futurism was national palingenesis—the belief that a nation must be reborn through struggle. This mirrored the Jacobins’ drive for societal transformation. Futurists sought to dismantle outdated systems to make way for a dynamic future. these ideas were implemented in the Italian Regency of Carnaro under Gabriele D’Annunzio and found echoes in Italian Fascism, where leaders like Mussolini adopted similar ideals of national renewal and modernity.
