US police detained 40 to 50 Columbia University students on Wednesday during a major pro-Palestinian protest, one of the largest on campus since last year. The students had occupied part of Butler Library, with their hands zip-tied as they were escorted into NYPD vans and buses.

The NYPD entered the six-story library to remove remaining protesters who refused to leave. Columbia officials had called for police support, declaring the students in the second-floor main reading room were trespassing.
A controversial bill that would criminalize participation in international boycotts of Israel, including fines up to $1 million and 20 years in prison, was pulled from the U.S. Congress schedule following backlash from “America First” Republicans and free speech advocates. Critics argued the bill, which proposed fines and imprisonment, violated First Amendment rights.

Opposition came not just from progressive lawmakers but also from conservative voices like Marjorie Taylor Greene and media figures Charlie Kirk and Steve Bannon. Their resistance reflects a growing scepticism of U.S. support for Israel, especially among younger Republicans concerned about free speech and foreign influence.
Oman announced that it has mediated a ceasefire deal between Yemen and the US on May 6th, which stipulates that no US ships will be targeted in the Red Sea and the Bab Al-Mandab strait, and in return, the US aggression on Yemen would halt.

The move brings an end to an aggressive exchange of fire between the two countries, in what has been Washington's biggest military operation during the Trump administration. Yemen’s Ansar-allah had initiated a Red Sea blockade in support of Ga-za, halting all ships affiliated with the Israeli entity including through the Bab Al-Mandab strait in response to Israel’s geno-cidal war that began in October 2023.

The ceasefire agreement, which reportedly shocked Israeli authorities, made no mention of the Ansar-allah halting it's attacks on Israel. Officials in Sanaa stressed that this does not affect Yemen’s support for Ga-za, and that nothing will deter them from defending the Pales-tinians until the geno-cide comes to an end.

Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar warned early Wednesday that Islamabad has “credible intelligence” of an imminent Indian military strike within the next 24 to 36 hours. He accused India of using the 22 April deadly incident in Pahalgam — where 26 tourists were killed in Indian-occupied Kashmir — as a pretext for aggression, vowing that any incursion would be met with force and holding New Delhi accountable for regional escalation.

Tensions have soared between the two nuclear-armed states, with India suspending the Indus Waters Treaty and closing land borders, while Pakistan cancelled Indian visas and shut its airspace to Indian carriers. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif warned a strike was “imminent” but reiterated Pakistan’s nuclear weapons would only be used in the event of an existential threat. The UN has urged restraint and offered to support de-escalation efforts. Iran has offered to mediate a diplomatic solution between the two nations.

“There was never peace with these savages. There is no peace and never will be…This land belongs only to the people of Israel. All of Ga-za, all of Leb-anon should be cleansed of these 'camel riders',” said a Zionist rabbi settler in the 2025 documentary, “The Settlers.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared a three-day unilateral ceasefire in Ukraine starting May 8, citing humanitarian reasons tied to Victory Day commemorations. This follows an earlier one-day truce for Easter, which Moscow claimed was violated over 1,000 times by Ukrainian forces. Kyiv has not responded to the new announcement.

The move comes shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump publicly urged Putin to end the war, warning he may withdraw the U.S. from ceasefire talks if no progress is made. Trump, who campaigned on ending the Ukraine conflict quickly, has renewed pressure on both sides, calling the war “ridiculous” and urging for a swift peace agreement.
In what was the worst fighting in more than two decades between the nuclear-armed South Asian neighbors, India struck 9 sites across Pakistan claiming it had targeted “terrorist infrastructure,” and Pakistan retaliated by downing 5 Indian fighter jets and opened artillery fire on Indian Kashmir.

The alleged terrorist sites were said to have housed Islamist militants India believes perpetrated an attack on tourists in Indian Kashmir last month. However, a government security committee said that Islamabad strongly rejected the allegations of the presence of any terrorist cells on its territory, and that at least 26 innocent people were killed in the attacks on Wednesday. The Indian strikes also included targets in Punjab, which, Pakistan's most densely populated province.

Islamabad says that India “had ignited an inferno in the region,” and pledges to retaliate "at a time, place and manner of its choosing to avenge the loss of innocent Pakistani lives and blatant violation of its sovereignty."
NEW YORK CITY — Wednesday, May 1, 2025
Police evacuated Barnard College’s Milstein Center on Wednesday following a bomb threat that interrupted a pro-Palestinian sit-in protest, prompting the arrest of multiple demonstrators and sparking renewed tensions on the upper Manhattan campus.

The New York Police Department reported via X (formerly Twitter) that a bomb threat was made at the Milstein Center — Barnard’s central academic hub — during the protest. Officers warned that anyone refusing to leave the premises during the evacuation would face arrest.

Yemen has issued a stern warning to the UK following British participation in a joint US-led airstrike campaign on targets south of Sanaa. The Yemeni government said the UK must “prepare to face consequences” for aiding Washington’s military aggression, which it framed as part of an Anglo-American effort to provide cover for the Israeli regime’s genocidal war on Gaza and to suppress Yemen’s solidarity with Palestinian resistance factions. The strikes come as the US escalates attacks across Yemen, killing dozens of African migrants in Saada just days earlier.

In response, Yemen claims to have targeted the USS Harry Truman and launched a strike on Ashkelon in Israel. The US has bombed over 1,000 targets in Yemen since March, yet civilian casualties are rising, with rights groups documenting deaths and warning that US-UK actions deepen Yemen’s suffering while failing to dent Yemen’s military capabilities.

“People say to me, ‘Why don't you explain to the Jews in the United States, what is exactly behind your thinking?’ I explain…you have to brainwash all the time. You have to say it, to explain it, to live it, to cope with it…Because this is the only way to continue Zionism,” says Daniella Weiss, an Israeli Orthodox Zionist and former Mayor of Kedumim, in a 2025 documentary titled, “The Settlers.”

Fourteen years after his first visit to the West Bank, filmmaker Louis Theroux returns to explore a growing community of Israeli religious-nationalist settlers.

Paramount is under intense public scrutiny following the resignation of longtime 60 Minutes executive producer Bill Owens, who stepped down amid allegations that the media giant interfered with the show’s editorial independence, particularly on coverage related to Israel’s war on Gaza and Donald Trump’s administration.

During Sunday’s episode, 60 Minutes anchor Scott Pelley issued a rare on-air statement acknowledging Owens’ departure and suggesting that Paramount had begun supervising content in “new ways”, which conflicted with the show’s journalistic values.

Port Sudan, Sudan’s de facto capital, has endured three days of drone strikes that have destroyed key infrastructure, including the airport, fuel depots, and power plants, leaving the city in darkness and chaos. The Sudanese government blames the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and accuses the United Arab Emirates of supplying the drones, prompting a severing of diplomatic ties with the UAE.

The attacks, which began Sunday, have disrupted humanitarian aid and caused over $500 million in damages. Although the RSF hasn’t claimed responsibility, analysts say it’s increasingly reliant on private military suppliers, possibly backed by the UAE.

With Port Sudan housing half a million displaced people, conditions are deteriorating rapidly.
Israel conducted a series of airstrikes across Yemen on Tuesday, targeting Sanaa International Airport, the Dhahban and Haiz power stations, and a cement plant in Amran.

Muhammad Al-Bukhaiti, member of the Supreme Political Council in Yemen, stated that the “military operations in support of Ga-za will continue, no matter the sacrifices,” and that “the Zio-nists have crossed red lines and must await Yemen’s response.”

Israel had also carried out strikes the night prior, targeting Hodeidah port, damaging 70 percent of the port's docks, injuring 56 people, and killing one. Surrounding civilian areas in the Al-Salakhanah and Al-Hawak neighborhoods were also hit. Israel claimed that the strikes were focused on military and tunnel infrastructure, and that the ports were used by the Ansar-allah to transfer ‘Iranian weapons.’

The Yemen Armed Forces struck Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport over the weekend, announcing a new air blockade on the Zionist entity in support of Ga-za.

Vietnam held a large military parade in Ho Chi Minh City to commemorate 50 years since the fall of Saigon and the end of the US war. Tens of thousands celebrated the April 30 anniversary with red flags, patriotic songs, and tributes to Ho Chi Minh, whose portrait led the lotus-shaped parade float. Veterans hailed the victory as a liberation from colonial occupation. For the first time, Chinese, Laotian and Cambodian soldiers marched in the event, signalling renewed regional alignment and a reminder of China’s past support in defeating US forces.

While Vietnam recently upgraded ties with Washington, the celebration took place amid growing tensions. Analysts say Hanoi’s inclusion of Chinese troops was also a message to the US not to mistake strategic engagement for alignment. For Vietnam, the anniversary is not only a remembrance of liberation from US occupation, but also a renewed assertion of sovereignty in the face of shifting global power dynamics.
Pro-Pales-tine activists launched a new protest this week at the port of Mersin in Turkey, opposing the arrival of a ZIM ship linked to Israel’s military campaign on Ga-za. This demonstration is the latest in a series of mass actions at Turkish ports — including Istanbul, Mersin, and Kocaeli — following revelations that ZIM vessels were transporting cargo essential to the Israeli military.

Tensions between India and Pakistan have sharply escalated after the Pakistani army shot down an Indian drone violating its airspace along the Line of Control. The incident follows days of cross-border skirmishes, India’s expulsion order against Pakistani nationals, and Islamabad’s warning of an “imminent” Indian incursion. Pakistan has closed its airspace to Indian airlines, suspended trade and cross-border links, and plans legal action over New Delhi’s unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty.

The crisis erupted after a deadly attack on Indian tourists in Indian-occupied Kashmir, which India blamed on Pakistan. Pakistan denies any involvement in the incident. As the UN and China urge restraint, Iran has offered to mediate between the two nuclear armed states. Muslim-majority Kashmir, claimed by both nations since 1947, remains a flashpoint for regional instability, fuelled by India’s escalating militarisation and Hindutva nationalist policies in the disputed territory.
The International Court of Justice has dismissed Sudan’s case accusing the UAE of aiding genocide in Darfur, citing a lack of jurisdiction due to the UAE’s reservation to Article IX of the Genocide Convention. The court ruled 14-2 that no legal basis existed to proceed.

Sudan alleged the UAE enabled atrocities by supporting the Rapid Support Forces, while the UAE denied involvement and called the case baseless. Legal experts criticized the ruling, warning that such reservations could allow states to escape accountability under international law.
Roughly 30 pro-Palestinian students were arrested Monday night at the University of Washington after occupying the Interdisciplinary Engineering Building (IEB) to protest the school’s ties with Boeing.

Organized by Students United for Palestinian Equality and Return (SUPER UW), the protest targeted Boeing's $10 million investment in the IEB and its alleged role in arming Israel during the war in Gaza. Protesters blocked entrances and displayed a banner honoring a Palestinian engineering student killed in an Israeli airstrike.

University officials condemned the occupation and what they called “antisemitic” messaging from the group. Protesters have to face charges including trespassing, property destruction, disorderly conduct, and conspiracy.

The students demanded the university sever ties with Boeing, accusing it of compromising academic independence and contributing to Palestinian suffering. Police cleared the area late Monday night, but university police have not commented further.
The Israeli regime has launched airstrikes near Sahnaya, south of Damascus, claiming it was protecting Syria’s Druze community from an alleged attack by Syrian forces. Tel Aviv said it delivered a “warning” to the Syrian authorities, declaring that it would not allow harm to the Druze, with whom Israel claims familial ties. Druze leadership confirmed direct coordination with Israeli commanders as clashes between Druze fighters and Syrian state forces escalated, leaving at least 17 dead. Fighting erupted after a falsified audio clip spread online, stoking sectarian tensions.

The airstrikes come amid the Israeli occupation’s deepening military entrenchment across southern Syria following the collapse of the former government of President Bashar al-Assad. Far-right Israeli minister Bezalel Smotrich openly declared Israel’s intent to displace Palestinians and dismember Syria, tying its Gaza invasion to its broader regional ambitions of a ‘Greater Israel’.
Pro-Israel groups confronted pro-Pal-estine demonstrators in Brooklyn, New York, hurling racist threats and verbal abuse on April 28, 2025. The pro-Pales-tine activists were opposing the visit of Israeli official Ben Gvir.

Footage captured members of the pro-Israeli groups barking, physically attacking the protesters, and making obscene gestures toward the pro-Pales-tine activists.

Campaigns are unfolding across Iraq to raise the flag of Sayyida Zainab (peace be upon her) on homes, public buildings, and government offices. The initiative reflects deep loyalty to her legacy and a symbolic stand for truth and justice.

The movement gained momentum after Syria’s new Al Qaeda-linked security forces removed the flag from Sayyida Zainab’s shrine, sparking outrage among Shiite Muslim communities. In response, Iraqis have shown strong support by displaying the flag widely, reaffirming their spiritual connection and reverence for her role in Islamic history.
Pro-Palestine activists staged a new protest this week at Turkey’s Mersin port against the docking of a ZIM ship tied to the Israeli regime’s genocidal war machine in Gaza. The demonstration follows months of mass protests across Turkish ports — in Istanbul, Mersin, and Kocaeli — after activists exposed how ZIM vessels continued bringing cargo critical to the Israeli Occupation Forces’s genocidal assault, despite Turkish President Erdogan’s public condemnation of Israel’s genocide.

While Erdogan now boasts about halting $9.5bn in trade with the Israeli regime, activists point to evidence that Turkish-Israeli trade — supplying Israeli steel, cement, chemicals, and weapon parts — continued uninterrupted for seven months. Protesters, met previously with police repression and live fire at Ambarli port, demand an immediate end to Turkey’s complicity in Israeli war crimes. The movement is part of a broader wave of worker-led resistance worldwide, from Greece to the US, targeting Israeli shipping giant ZIM.
