The Reality of 'Toughness'
Sitting in the 'Husayniyyah, there was a brief moment in which I looked around for a few seconds. I saw a few brothers, some of whom praying, others reading Qur'an or in supplication, etc. They were not a group; at least not in the literal sense. What caught my attention was that they were young, well-built, and visibly pious. They were from the area, like myself. It seemed they also belonged to the same 'estrangement' - obviously in terms of religion but also politically, financially, etc. It occurred to me perhaps instantly: every nation and society in the world has its bravest and strongest - those who defend it and represent its force. But rarely does one ponder upon the reality of that 'toughness'. It is simply glorified to suggest some kind of civilizational measure, which is understandable. But the fact of the matter is there is no comparison between the empire's men who enjoy every form of material superiority and the men who face the empire with no guarantees. The reality is 'toughness' can only be used to describe those who defy the 'bully'. We make the conscious decision to do what no one dares because that is what devotion to truth and justice constitutes upon us. Our poverty is in the sight of God. The inconveniences that come with our commitment to the virtuous struggle are in the sight of God. The fact that we are less in number and resources is in the sight of God. By definition, there can be no 'toughness' or 'bravery' on the side of falsehood. Such attributes belong exclusively to the mustad'afeen, and our istid'af is in the sight of God. Peace be upon Ameer al-Mu'mineen (a) who said: "Verily, the tree of the wilderness is stronger in timber"..
