Today we honor the life and legacy of Stephen Douglas, Senator, Secretary of State, Justice and Midwestern icon.
Born this day in 1813, Douglas moved to Jackson, Illinois to begin a career in law. Though he had humble origins, his early attachment to the burgeoning Democratic Party saw him rise in influence and notoriety until he became a state justice, and by 1843 a Representative for Illinois in Congress.
Douglas' vocal support for states' rights and resistance to the abolition movement proved popular, and only 4 years later he became a Senator, later clashing with Abraham Lincoln and beating him in a second Senatorial race, from which we gained the famous Lincoln-Douglas Debates.
Although Douglas did much to advance the cause of the nation, including supporting westward expansion with the Kansas-Nebraska Act and the annexation of former Mexican territories, he was a man behind the times - too radical for the pro-slavery faction, too moderate for the pro-abolition faction. When he lost his presidential bid to James Buchanan, his political star began to fall. He spent his last years in Congress trying to prevent the secession that everyone could so clearly see coming, believing that the issue of slavery was not worth a war of brother against brother. In the end, he died not long after the Battle of Fort Sumter that began the Civil War, a man who had spent his life working for the common good and unity of a nation that could not help dividing.

The actual story is way more disgusting. The town had a program to help elderly men without families, by providing them a small clubhouse and community center to hang out, and some local shitlib activist decided to take over their clubhouse by harassing the organizers to allow random women to take over the clubhouse.
