From Flood to Future: Nigerian Teen Wins Global Prize for Turning Trash into Playgrounds

After surviving a devastating flood in 2020, which destroyed her home’s lower floor, young climate advocate Amara Nwuneli realized her privilege in being able to recover—unlike many others, especially in rural Nigeria. So she took action.

♻️ In an interview with Sputnik Africa, she explained that her project GREEN transforms waste sites into community parks—with recycled materials, climate-themed play zones, eco-education, and jobs for locals.

📈 She hopes to scale it across Nigeria and West Africa, starting with Enugu, Anambra, and Ogun states.

She’s also using her voice to call out unfair Western aid and demand real investment in Africa’s potential.

“Africa has so much potential… Let’s train and empower locals to build their own countries.”

Her advice to young Africans: “Know your story. That drive will take you far.”

🇹🇷 Istanbul mayor DETAINED: reactions and economic backlash

▪️Ekrem Imamoglu, who was seen as a main political rival of President Erdogan, has been accused of being a member of a criminal organization, extortion, bribery and aggravated fraud.

▪️The Istanbul University has annulled Imamoglu’s degree over alleged irregularities, in a move that he rejected as “illegal”. Without a university degree, he would be disqualified from running for president.

▪️The detention comes before Turkiye’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) is due to hold a primary election, where Imamoglu was expected to be picked as the party’s presidential candidate.

How did politicians react?

🔻CHP leader Ozgur Ozel slammed Imamoglu’s arrest as “a coup attempt against our [Turkiye’s] next president.”

🔻CHP deputy chairman Ilhan Uzgel accused the government of using the Istabul mayor’s detention as an "instrument to intimidate" Turkiye’s opposition.

🔻“A handful of people who are trying to steal the will of the people, have sent […] the security forces implicating them in this wrongful doing,” Imamoglu himself wrote on X, referring to his arrest.

Meanwhile, Erdogan’s office has condemned “baseless slander” against the Turkish president amid the mayor’s detention.

What’s the economic backlash?

🔸The Istanbul Stock Exchange’s main index plummeted by 7% over the news of Imamoglu’s arrest, resulting in a temporary halt to trading to prevent panic selling.

🔸The Turkish lira made a record fall in the aftermath of the Istanbul mayor’s detention, dropping to 41 against the US dollar.

Kiev’s Hostage Tactics? Expert Slams Use of Human Shields

"The Kiev regime and its Western allies, including NATO, France, and the United Kingdom, are holding Ukrainians hostage," international relations expert Ruhollah Modabber told Sputnik, commenting on Russia’s recent missile strike on Sumy.

He accused Kiev of turning civilians into human shields by placing military targets near residential areas.

"We have constantly observed how Kiev places its air defense systems in parking lots or stations military personnel on the lower floors of residential buildings."

Modabber warned that foreign mercenaries and officials involved in war crimes "will eventually be held accountable."

Kenya to Open Doors for New Commercial Banks

The Central Bank of Kenya announced on Wednesday that it would lift its decade-long freeze on new commercial bank licenses starting July 1st.

The moratorium, implemented in 2015 due to concerns about governance, risk management, and operational issues, will be lifted following significant improvements in the banking sector's legal and regulatory framework.

The CBK also cited the recent tenfold increase in minimum core capital requirements for commercial banks to 10 billion Kenyan shillings ($77 million) as further strengthening the sector's stability.

🇷🇺🌍 Do the Russians want to invade Europe? "100% no"

Claims that "the Russians are going to march across Europe" are odd, US special envoy Steve Witkoff said in an interview with US journalist Tucker Carlson.

Other key points made by Witkoff:

🟠 Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump could meet in the coming months;

🟠 Washington has made significant progress in negotiations with Moscow;

🟠 A moratorium on strikes in the Black Sea could be established next week;

🟠 Kiev agreed to hold elections in Ukraine;

🟠 Zelensky and the head of his administration also largely agreed that Ukraine will not join NATO;

🟠 If peace is reached with Russia, Kiev's membership in the alliance will become impossible;

🟠 The United States cannot continue to give money to Ukraine, as it sees this as a threat to escalate the conflict to the point of using nuclear weapons.
