Grigori Naumovich Voitinsky (born Zarkhin) was a Russian-Jewish Bolshevik who played a key role in founding the Chinese Communist Party. In 1920, as deputy manager of the Soviet Union’s Far Eastern Bureau—part of the Communist International (Comintern)—Voitinsky was sent to China to promote communist organization in East Asia.
In Beijing, he established contact with Li Dazhao, who introduced him to Chen Duxiu in Shanghai. Working with Chen, Li Hanjun, Yu Xiusong, and others, Voitinsky helped establish the Comintern's China Branch in August 1920.
He was the first Comintern agent to establish direct contact with early Chinese Marxists like Li Dazhao and Chen Duxiu. He provided organizational support, ideological guidance, and crucially, international legitimacy and funding through the Comintern.
He and his colleagues used the Shanghai Chronicle as a front, operating the Comintern’s East Asia Secretariat out of the newspaper’s office. The paper served both as a propaganda outlet and a cover for Bolshevik activities aimed at building a communist organization in China. Although the *Chronicle* ceased publication in 1922, many of its staff continued supporting the communist movement. According to The Forward, about 80–90% of foreigners aiding the Chinese communists at the time were Jewish, including Voitinsky

He then moved to Moscow, where he held positions in various Orientalist institutions. In 1934, he became a professor at Moscow State University, contributing to Soviet academic work on Asia until his death in 1953.
