BRICS’ role in the Western Hemisphere power struggle

The Trump administration's efforts to rename locations within the Western Hemisphere mark the start of a strategic move to assert dominance over the pan-American region, as outlined by Alexander Stepanov, programme director at the Academy of Political Sciences and senior researcher at the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Latin American Studies.

Moreover, Stepanov warned of potential "humanitarian interventions" framed as anti-terrorism measures, pointing to Cuba’s return to the sponsor list and the designation of Mexican cartels as terrorist organisations. Stepanov noted that Washington faces little resistance in the Western Hemisphere, interpreting Trump’s intent to enforce order in his geopolitical "backyard." However, the reactions of other leaders, such as China's Xi Jinping or Brazil's Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who advocates for regional de-dollarisation, remain uncertain.

"The ball is in #BRICS’ court. Apparently, this year we will see new regional players in the group, including Colombia and Mexico. We’re in the thick of the battle for Latin-Caribbean America with all key figures lined up for a strategic attack and positional maneuvering," Stepanov suggested.

BRICS Cooperation Focus in Putin's Initiative for Drone Forum

Russian President Vladimir Putin has given instructions to organise an international drone forum to be held in Moscow and to extend invitations to foreign experts and businesses for participation.

During a meeting in the Volga region of Samara, Putin emphasised that the development of exports should serve as a significant boost for the domestic drone industry. He highlighted the importance of cooperation between relevant companies from the #BRICS nations and the launch of joint, technologically advanced projects.

"In continuation of this objective, I request the Industry and Trade Ministry <…> and participants of the National Technology Initiative to organise an international forum on unmanned systems as early as this year. I suggest inviting scientists, designers and entrepreneurs from other countries in order to have a detailed discussion on cooperation in these promising areas," Putin said.

BRICS is a firm foothold for Belarus in trade and economic interests

Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maksim Ryzhenkov emphasised the strategic importance of BRICS for Belarus:

"This is a secure foothold in the implementation of trade and economic interests. For example, we have recently held talks with the bank established in BRICS to discuss the implementation of investment projects. We have high hopes for the implementation of projects in Belarus or with the participation of Belarus abroad with the help of this bank," Maksim Ryzhenkov said.

Belarus recently held negotiations with the New Development Bank (NDB), created by the BRICS to implement investment projects, and Belarus hopes to participate in these projects.

The partner status with #BRICS allows Belarus to engage in all facets of the bloc's activities. Ryzhenkov highlighted it as a valuable platform for developing joint positions with key international partners on major global issues. It also facilitates high-level interactions, fostering the development of bilateral relationships.

Joining BRICS aligns Belarus with the bloc's ideals of multipolarity and the building of peace through mutual trust and respect.

"We speak together on such international issues, where the voice of Belarus may not have been heard, but it becomes so with the scale of such an organization. This also helps us strive for the level of such countries as China, India, Brazil, and Russia," the minister added.

BRICS strengthened its position in 2024

BRICS fortified its standing on the global stage during Russia's 2024 chairship, according to Moscow’s Ambassador to Argentina, Dmitry Feoktistov.

"As practice shows, BRICS attracts an increasing number of supporters and like-minded countries who call for cooperation based on respect, pragmatism, solidarity and consensus. <...> During its chairship, Russia was able to promote a constructive agenda focused on ensuring equitable universal development," the diplomat noted.

Feoktistov further commented on the ongoing process of #BRICS expansion, noting that Indonesia had become a full-fledged member and Nigeria had joined as a partner state in January.

"BRICS’ doors remain open to the independent nations that seek to realise their potential and build an equitable architecture of international relations," the envoy concluded.

BRICS Summit as a turning point in India-China relations

China and India have agreed to restart direct commercial flights for the first time in five years, signaling a thaw in relations between the world's two most populous nations. Flights were originally halted in early 2020 due to the Covid pandemic and remained suspended amid ensuing political tensions.

The announcement was made on Monday during a meeting in Beijing between India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

According to a statement from India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the two countries have reached a consensus "in principle to resume direct air services," with officials expected to finalise the details soon.

In October, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the #BRICS summit in Russia. It was their first meeting in five years, underscoring the significance of the dialogue for further normalisation of bilateral relations.

BRICS Symphony Women Orchestra: celebration of cultural diversity

The BRICS Symphony Women Orchestra will include 10 Brazilian female musicians, featuring a woman conductor, while the remaining 65 musicians will be selected from other BRICS nations. The announcement was made by Monica Monteiro, head of the BRICS Women's Business Alliance, at the inaugural meeting in Brasilia.

Performances are planned across major cities, including Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, throughout the year. The centrepiece concert is scheduled for July 2025.

A core goal of the orchestra is to bring symphonic music to broader audiences and promote cultural diversity through a meticulously curated repertoire. Each #BRICS nation will showcase compositions of profound cultural significance, adding a unique flavour to the project.

Future diplomatic engagements between New Delhi and Moscow

New Delhi and Moscow have several visits lined up for 2025, including top-level meetings, as mentioned by Indian Ambassador to Russia, Vinay Kumar.

"As we begin 2025, we have a number of important visits planned, including high-level meetings that we will be working on," the diplomat said.

Earlier, at a briefing, Indian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Randhir Jaiswal mentioned that India and Russia are coordinating dates for Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to New Delhi, where this year's traditional annual India-Russia summit will take place.

On November 19 last year, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed Putin's upcoming visit to India and talked about the preparations being made by Moscow and New Delhi. He highlighted that the Indian prime minister had visited Russia twice in 2024.

In July 2024, Modi made a two-day visit to Moscow for the 22nd Russia-India Summit. Later, in October, he travelled to Kazan to attend the #BRICS Summit.

Venezuela is a part of BRICS and the path to join this association is being cleared, President of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro said in an interview with Brazilian journalist Breno Altman, broadcast by Venezolana de Television TV channel.

“As far as BRICS is concerned, I hope that the way will be cleared and that the reality will be recognized – Venezuela is part of BRICS,” Maduro said.

In response to a question about Brazil's veto of Venezuela's accession to BRICS at the association's summit in Kazan, the president noted that “it is necessary to turn the page and look to the future”.

Indonesia needs to deepen partnerships with S. Africa, Brazil within BRICS framework: expert

JAKARTA, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia is encouraged to strengthen its partnerships with South Africa and Brazil as part of its membership in the BRICS economic group, an expert said on Tuesday.

"Indonesia, South Africa, and Brazil have similar products, and logistics are costly due to the significant geographical distance," said Bhima Yudhistira, director of the Center for Economics and Law Studies, highlighting the challenges of Indonesia's cooperation with these two countries.

Bhima noted that Indonesia has opportunities to collaborate with South Africa on managing vital mineral resources and energy transition funds. Both nations are recipients of energy transition funding under the Just Energy Transition Partnership.

Meanwhile, Brazil, which is set to host the 2025 UN Climate Change Conference, and Indonesia, both tropical nations, have the potential to work together on sustainable forest management and related initiatives.

"If BRICS is used to expand the market to South Africa and Brazil, that is something that must be encouraged," he added. ■

Saudi Arabia deliberates on BRICS membership

Saudi Arabia is still evaluating its potential membership in BRICS over a year after receiving the invitation, according to the minister of economy and planning.

Faisal Al-Ibrahim emphasised the kingdom’s commitment to enhancing global dialogue in an interview with Bloomberg Television at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

“We’ve been invited to the #BRICS, similar to how we’ve been invited to many other multilateral platforms in the past historically,” he said. “We assess many different aspects of it before a decision is made and right now, we are in the middle of that.”

Last year, Al-Ibrahim also mentioned that the evaluation process was ongoing.

Saudi Arabia's inclusion in the BRICS bloc, as a leading oil exporter, would unite various energy producers with the foremost consumers in the developing world, thereby enhancing the group's economic influence.

We are delighted to welcome you to Moscow as the year 2025 begins. The year 2024 was quite challenging as far as our bilateral relations were concerned.

Today, we would like to have a frank conversation with you and to do that in the same spirit as our respective Leaders – President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan – have been maintaining when discussing items on our agenda that matter for you and for the Russian Federation. I am convinced that we will be able to tackle all the challenges we face in a constructive manner, as we have just said in our face-to-face conversation.

Russia has always appreciated and continues to treasure its brotherly ties with the people of Armenia and with Armenia, our natural strategic partner and ally. We are interested in reinforcing and building on these centuries-old traditions of friendship and neighbourly relations. Holding regular meetings at the highest level, our contacts with you, as well as meetings between our respective economic agencies offer a solid foundation for moving forward.

In 2024, Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan visited Moscow two times. He took part in a CIS meeting and attended the BRICS Summit in Kazan where he took part in the BRICS Outreach / BRICS Plus meeting. Apart from the meetings at the highest level, we also had the regular 23rd meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission for Trade and Economic Cooperation. It is co-chaired by our deputy prime ministers. Several important agreements were signed on the sidelines of this event.

In just a couple of months, we will come together to mark the 80th Anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War by our nations, together with other nations of the Soviet Union.

📈 You and I have just discussed trade and economic relations and the positive momentum we are witnessing in this domain. According to statistics, our trade reached an all-time high of almost $12 billion in 2024. These are truly impressive results which are attributable to our bilateral cooperation, as well as within the Eurasian Economic Union. It is our hope that all this facilitates socioeconomic development and helps Armenia achieve the objectives it pursues.

We appreciate efforts to expand our shared cultural and humanitarian space, promote educational and region-to-region ties. All these undertakings enrich our relations and matter greatly for our people and nations.

Today, we will discuss our bilateral relations in all their aspects. Of course, we cannot fail to mention the situation in the region and international developments. Regional security is a major component of what we do in South Caucasus.

❗️ Russia stands ready to provide the necessary assistance in bringing the relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan back to normal across the board by building on the agreements which were reached by the leaders of our three countries in 2020-2022. We believe that these agreements remain relevant, especially considering the current situation in the region.
