The King that stood before Pilate was Jesus, Who is our God our Salvation. I wonder if Pilate ever knew Christ as King of His life and Lord of all?

There are many who know about Jesus. There are many who have heard he was called 'king of the Jews.' There are many who know about his miracles and teachings and there are many who know He was crucified on a cross 2000 years ago. But how many, like Pilate, fail to understand the significance of His death and the glories of His resurrection.

May we be men and women whom God will use to tell out the truth of the glorious gospel of grace, while it is still time, for we are His representatives on earth, who have been commissioned as ministers of reconciliation. May we tell the truth of the gospel of grace while there is still time, for He is the only Way the only Truth and in Him alone are the words of eternal Life.

God bless you all.

“Are You The King Of The Jews?”

After Christ's illegal trial and unjust interrogation before Annas and Caiaphas, the high priest, Jesus was sent to the Praetorium, to be delivered to Pilate, the Roman governor of Judea and Samaria. The Jews' hatred of Christ was intense, and they desired His death, but being under Roman governance, they were denied the right of execution, as laid out in the Law of Moses.

When Pilate asked what crime Jesus had committed they could only reply, "If He were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him up to you!!" They were basically saying that although Jesus committed no crime and there was no accusation against Him, He must be guilty of something because He was sent to Pilate to be sentenced.

History records that Pilate was a corrupt and cruel individual, who frequently offended people with his cruelty and outspoken attitude, but he was also a weak man, with a flawed character, and the Jews hoped to manipulate him into sentencing Jesus to death with no evidence of a crime.

The Bible records that Christ came as the King of the Jews to fulfil Scripture, and it was this title of 'King' that intrigued the governor... and so we read, "Therefore Pilate entered again into the Praetorium, and summoned Jesus and said to Him, 'Are You the King of the Jews?'" Pilate knew Jesus had been brought to him out of envy, and he sought to deliver Him from the hands of the Jews ~ not out of compassion, but as a slight to the Jewish leaders, who caused him much grief with their various uprisings and resistance to Roman rule.

Pilate was right to be curious about Christ's claims to be King of the Jews, for He was the Messiah, promised by God, Who would save His people from their sins. He was the eternal Son of God, Who came to earth as the sinless Son of Man. He was the Blessed Hope, Who came to redeem mankind from the tyranny of sin. Jesus was born King of the Jews at His birth in Bethlehem, and He was labelled King of the Jews at His crucifixion at Calvary ~ but as the prophesied Messiah and rightful King of Israel, Who was appointed by God, there was so much more than Pilate failed to understand.

He is the risen, ascended King of Righteousness and He is the coming Prince of Peace. He is God of all gods and is King of the Ages and Ruler of both heaven and earth. Jesus is the King of Glory and the God of Glory for He is the Lord God Almighty, the Lord mighty in battle.

Yet Jesus was led as a Lamb to the slaughter and stood silent before Pilate, bloodied and bruised, so that He could pay the price for OUR transgressions. He was ridiculed and despised to pay the cost of OUR iniquities. The chastisement of our peace was upon HIM, and with His stripes, WE are healed.

I wonder if Pilate ever truly came to understand Who this Man, standing before him was. I wonder if he ever discovered Who it was Who told him, "My kingdom is not of this world's system."  I wonder if Pilate, who boasted "I have power to crucify You, and the power to release You", ever came to a saving knowledge of Jesus and discovered that He is the great Creator~King of the universe, and the One Who loves us so much that He died so that we might live ~ that Pilate might live ~ by faith in Him?

Jesus did not only come as the Passover Lamb for the Jews and the compulsory Sin Offering for the whole world, to fulfil the will of His Heavenly Father. Jesus also came as the sweet~smelling savour to the Lord, for He stretched out His arms to the cross willingly, so that He could give His life for love of the Church. For the joy that was set before Him, Jesus endured the cross. For our sake He despised the shame, and at this very moment, He is seated at the right hand of the Majesty of High, interceding for you and me. For He is the sovereign King of all and our heavenly Mediator.

He is King of kings and Lord of lords. He is the King of Peace Who is coming to smash and crush forever, the corrupt kingdoms of this world system, and restore righteousness and hope to a world that is drowning in sin.

Be Still & Wait On The Lord

These words of David have been of great comfort to many who have been overwhelmed by the fights and fancies of evildoers who, in comparison with godly man, seem to prosper in the ways of the world. These evildoers can excite envy from those that are seeking to walk in spirit and truth. But we are reminded not to fret or to become perturbed by the actions and attitudes of the wicked who seem to prosper in their wicked ways, for they shall receive their just desserts. Indeed, their apparent successes in life are but a flash in the pan of eternity, for they are like the grass which will soon be nothing more than a fleeting shadow.

The godly are called to trust in the Lord and to hold fast to the faith once offered to the saints, for our hope is in Christ. The believer is called upon to delight in the things of God, for those are the qualities of life that have everlasting joy, eternal purpose, and heavenly rewards. We are to maintain our faith in the power and promises of God, for He will vindicate all His children and His justice will shine as brightly as the noonday sun.

We are to be still in His presence and to patiently wait for the Lord to act on our behalf.

Being still in the presence of God is not a sulky silence or hushed murmuring, but is simply resting in Him, trusting in His Word of truth, abiding in His love, and being content to await His timing. It is to possess a purposeful patience and not to display a glum resignation. When we are quietly resting in His presence and secure in the hope that is set before us, the peace of God which passes understanding will flood the heart and soul of all who walk godly in Christ Jesus.

Let us daily be still in the presence of the LORD as we wait patiently for Him to act. Let us not worry about evil people who prosper nor fret about their wicked schemes for they will eventually be cut off. Indeed, the LORD rescuing the godly from the wicked in His own time and His own way.

So be still in the presence of the LORD, and wait patiently for Him to act.

God bless you all.

A Broken & A Contrite Heart

Blessed are the poor in spirit for it is only the heart that is broken before the Lord and truly humbled under a deep conviction of one's own unworthiness before a holy and righteous God, that a man or woman of faith can offer to the Lord the sacrifice of a broken heart ~ a living sacrifice, worthy of His acceptance.

It was David who wrote this psalm, and he was a man who loved the Lord and made many sacrificial offerings to Him. But David knew that the blood of bulls and goats was not the thing that pleased the Lord, but a heart that is broken before Him ~ a heart that is contrite and truly repentant. "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit. A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise."

It is only the soul who, through the Spirit's convicting work, is bereft of its own self~importance and which is smitten in genuine repentance of sin, that can offer the sacrifice of a broken and contrite spirit, which is so acceptable and pleasing to the heart of God.

David knew the darkness of his own heart. He knew he was a sinner who could not cleanse his own soul, which is why he prayed that God would create in him a clean heart, and renew a steadfast spirit within him. David knew his own broken fellowship with the Lord was the result of his own sin. He knew that only God could cleanse him and wash his soul whiter than snow. Joy and gladness in the Lord can only be restored in the one with a broken spirit and contrite heart.

Such lowliness of spirit proceeds from a heart of faith, which is looking to Christ as Advocate. It is only through Him that God's mercy, forgiveness, kindness and grace will wash away every scarlet~stain that clings to our sin~encrusted soul, when offered in brokenness of heart and true contriteness of spirit.

This verse not only refers to our initial justification, where the manifold sins of an unsaved man or woman are forgiven. It also refers to the crushing weight of a believer's post~salvation sins. The sacrifice of God is the broken spirit and contrite heart of the believer who desires to die to self and live godly in Christ Jesus.

Our union with our God can never be broken, but our fellowship with Him and our daily communion can be severed when the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life causes us to stray from the path of righteousness into the destructive dead~end of sin. It is the sacrifice about which David wrote that returns us into sweet fellowship with our Father in heaven.

Unlike David, Church~age believers need never be concerned that the Holy Spirit will be taken from us, for He took up permanent residence in our heart the moment we trusted Christ for salvation and He will NEVER leave us nor forsake us, even when we sin. But we can grieve the Spirit of God by our words and actions and we can quench the work He desires to carry out in our lives, when we are not looking to Jesus, and walking in humbleness of spirit and dependence on our Father in heaven.

When David recognised his own lustful sin, he offered his own sacrifice of a broken spirit and a contrite heart, and like David, we know that God will not despise such an acceptable sacrifice. But like David, we too must approach the throne of grace in brokenness of heart and contrition of spirit, for such is well~pleasing and acceptable to our holy God.

God bless you all.

God can do more with a broken man than with one who seems strong in his own strength and power.

THE POWER OF SCRIPTURE

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword. . and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
HEBREWS 4:12

The Word of God gives us great help in attaining the peace we need. It is living, very lively and active in seizing the conscience of the sinner, in cutting him to the heart, and in comforting him and binding up the wounds of the soul. It is powerful. It convinces powerfully, converts powerfully, and comforts powerfully. It is powerful enough to batter down Satan's kingdom and set up the kingdom of Christ upon the ruins. It is sharper than any two-edged sword. It will enter where no other sword can and make a more critical dissection. It pierces to the dividing asunder of the soul and the spirit, the soul and its habitual prevailing temper. It makes a soul that has been proud for a long time humble, a soul that has been perverse meek and obedient.
This sword divides between the joints and the marrow. It can make men willing to undergo the sharpest operation for the mortifying of sin. It is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. The Word will turn the sinner inside out and let him see all that is in his heart.

Rejoice In The LORD!

Joy was much on Paul's heart as he wrote his letter to the saints in Philippi, and despite the fact that he himself was being held as a prisoner in chains, he did not allow the circumstances of his life to affect his joy in the Lord. And as he neared the end of this epistle of encouragement to his brothers in Christ, he repeatedly called each one of us to rejoice in the Lord ~ to be joyful in God our Saviour ~ to delight ourselves in Christ our Lord.

Too often we permit the difficult circumstances of our present situation or the careless attitudes of other people, to rob us of the inner, unshakable joy we have in Christ Jesus today. How important to take our eyes off the temporal and focus on the eternal.

How necessary to look away from today's storms clouds that appear so threatening and which can so quickly cast a shadow on the eternal hope we have in our heavenly home, which is rooted in the Word of God and grounded on Christ Jesus our Lord.

How necessary to take our eyes off this world, which is passing away, and turn our gaze onto Christ. We are already seated in heavenly places with our Bridegroom. Let us not stare down at the world with its trials and tribulations, and instead keep our eyes on Jesus. And as our perspective changes, the things of the earth lose their vice like grip on us, and the things of Christ become our focus, then the only natural result is an outpouring of rejoicing in our Lord.

Let us heed this final call of our dear brother in Christ to rejoice in the Lord, and again I say rejoice.

God bless you all.
