Traffic growth in Kazakhstan stimulates expansion of airport infrastructure
🇰🇿 Kazakh authorities continue to develop the country’s airport infrastructure amid growing air traffic.
In the first quarter of 2025, the airports of Kazakhstan’s two largest cities — the current capital Astana and the former capital Almaty — continued to increase their passenger flows, according to the Central Asian republic’s National Bureau of Statistics.
The largest growth was seen in Almaty, where 1.35 million passengers were served in the first three months of the year — a 16% year-on-year increase. The growth was apparently driven by the launch of a new passenger terminal in 2024, which boosted the airport’s annual capacity from 2.5 million to 14 million passengers.
Astana airport served 944,000 passengers, marking a 3.1% y-on-y increase.
Kazakhstan’s third-largest airport, Shymkent, saw a 3% decline in passenger numbers in January-March, down to 260,000 passengers. However, after opening a new terminal at the end of last year, the airport’s capacity increased from 800,000 to 6 million passengers per year.
But local carrier SCAT Airlines (and operator of the terminal) is yet to launch new international routes from Shymkent this summer.
Last year, a new terminal also opened at Kyzylorda Airport, increasing its capacity from 300,000 to 2 million passengers per year.
In addition, major renovations of runway surfaces at Aktau and Pavlodar airports are underway and expected to be completed later this year.
By order of the President of Kazakhstan, construction has begun on new airports in the resort areas of Katon-Karagay and Zaysan in the east of the country, as well as Kendirli on the Caspian Sea coast. These new air gateways will be equipped with runways over 2,000 meters long.
Alongside the construction of ground infrastructure, the government plans to purchase ATR-72 or DHC Dash-8 turboprops through the Industrial Development Fund to launch direct flights to these airports from Almaty, Astana, and other major cities in Kazakhstan to stimulate tourism.
Another airport will be built in the special economic zone Khorgos–Eastern Gate on the border with China. Plans call for the construction of a passenger terminal with a capacity of up to 500 people per hour, a cargo terminal capable of handling 250,000 tons of freight per year, and an aircraft maintenance center.

Korea’s Incheon Airport Corp. to manage Uzbekistan's Urgench airport
🇺🇿 Incheon International Airport Corp. (IIAC), the operator of South Korea's largest airport Seoul Incheon, won the tender for modernization and management of Urgench International Airport (UGC, Uzbekistan) under the public-private partnership (PPP) project, Uzbekistan Airports reported.
Once the concession agreement is signed, the Korean company to operate the Uzbek airport over the next 19 years.
Under the public-private partnership, the Korean partner will build and manage the passenger and cargo terminals, including ground handling. The state partner Uzbekistan Airports is to build and manage the airfield complex (runway and apron).
Open two-stage tender for the implementation of the project “Modernization and Management of Urgench International Airport” under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model was announced in August 2024.
Eight companies took part in the tender, five of them made it to the second final stage, following which the winner was determined by the interdepartmental tender commission.
The project is being implemented by Uzbekistan Airports together with the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Uzbekistan.
"The announcement of an open tender has generated great interest from large international airport companies. <…> We are confident that the [IIAC] team that will implement the project in Urgench will turn the gateway of Khorezm into one of the most modern and convenient for passengers, will increase the attractiveness of the region for foreign tourists and, in general, will contribute to the development of the aviation sector of republic,” Uzbekistan Airports commented.
Urgench is located in the northwest of the Central Asian republic, near the border with Turkmenistan. In 2024, the airport served 696,000 passengers, representing a healthy 18% year-on-year growth, 5,500 flights were performed (+11%).
Seoul Incheon became the third busiest international airport (70.7 million passengers, up 5.7%), ceding only to Dubai (DXB) and London’s Heathrow in 2024.
IIAC, fully-owned by the Government of South Korea, has carried out over 30 international business expansions in 15 countries.

Air Astana delays launch of the US flights
🇰🇿 Kazakhstan’s largest carrier, Air Astana, will postpone the launch of its direct flights to the United States due to another delay in the delivery of its new long-haul Boeing 787 aircraft, company CEO Peter Foster told reporters.
"Unfortunately, the delivery is being delayed due to the broader issues currently affecting Boeing," Forbes Kazakhstan quoted Foster as saying.
According to the CEO, the delivery schedule has shifted from late 2025 to mid-2026. Air Astana ordered three Boeing 787-9 aircraft via Air Lease Corporation in 2022.
In 2024, representatives of the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) conducted a preliminary technical audit of Kazakhstan, including Air Astana. This was the first step toward securing FAA Category 1 status, a requirement for launching direct air service between Kazakhstan and the United States.
Air Astana had also planned to use the Boeing 787-9 to launch flights from Almaty to Tokyo. The airline has already signed a codeshare agreement with Japan Airlines (JAL), allowing it to place its code on JAL flights from Tokyo to Fukuoka, Nagoya, Okinawa, Osaka, and Sapporo.
Foster confirmed that the first flight to Tokyo is now scheduled for March 28–29, 2026, but it will be operated using narrowbody Airbus A321LR aircraft. The airline previously extended the aircraft’s range by installing additional fuel tanks, enabling it to reach Japan's capital, he explained.

Четвертый самолет LET L-410 пополнил флот группы Uzbekistan Airways
🇺🇿 Сегодня, 7 апреля узбекистанская региональная авиакомпания Silk Avia, входящая в группу Uzbekistan Airways, получила четвертый, заключительный, турбовинтовой самолет местных линий L-410 UVP-E20.
19-местные самолеты, произведенные чешской компанией LET Aircraft Industries, приобретаются в рамках программы развития внутриреспубликанских авиаперевозок.
«Эти надежные самолеты значительно улучшат транспортную доступность удаленных регионов и укрепят связи между городами страны. Мы продолжим расширять маршрутную сеть, чтобы сделать воздушное сообщение доступным для еще большего числа наших граждан», – отметил Шухрат Худайкулов, председатель правления Uzbekistan Airways.
В настоящее время L-410 используются на маршрутах Нукус – Муйнак, Ташкент – Шахрисабз, Ташкент – Заамин.
Кроме этого, в парке Silk Avia есть еще пять 70-местных ATR 72-600.

Узбекская авиакомпания My Freighter нашла партнера в Мексике
🇺🇿 Крупнейший по размеру флота грузовой авиаперевозчик Узбекистана – My Freighter заключил интерлайн-соглашение с мексиканской авиакомпанией Aeromexico.
Оно начало действовать с 1 апреля и позволяет My Freighter отравлять грузы рейсами Aeromexico в мексиканские аэропорты Мехико (MEX), Гвадалахара (GDL) и Монтеррей (MTY). Мексиканский перевозчик получил возможность доставлять грузы до аэропорта Ташкента (TAS) в Узбекистане и далее по Центральной Азии грузовиками материнской компании My Freighter – Centrum Holding.

🇰🇬 Kyrgyzstan has signed an intergovernmental air services agreement with Bahrain. The signing ceremony took place during the first-ever official visit of Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov to the Persian Gulf country on April 21.
"The signing of this agreement creates a legal framework for establishing direct air services between Kyrgyzstan and Bahrain, which in turn opens up new prospects for the development of tourism, business ties, and trade," noted the Civil Aviation Agency of Kyrgyzstan.
The government authorities of both countries will promptly undertake coordinated actions and determine a timeline for the swift launch of a direct flight between the capitals, Bishkek and Manama, according to a joint statement following negotiations between Zhaparov and King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain.
Currently, Kyrgyzstan maintains air services with 14 countries.
The Kyrgyz authorities are also in discussions regarding the removal of its national airlines from the European Union’s blacklist, which has banned them from flying to the EU since 2006.

🇺🇿 Incheon International Airport Corp. (IIAC), оператор крупнейшего в Южной Корее аэропорта Сеул (Инчхон), стал победителем тендера на модернизацию и управление международным аэропортом Ургенч (UGC, Узбекистан) на основе государственно-частного партнерства (ГЧП), сообщили в Uzbekistan Airports.
После заключения концессионного соглашения о ГЧП, корейская компания получит узбекский аэропорт в управление на 19 лет.
ГЧП предусматривает совместную реализацию проекта по модернизации и управлению аэропортом. Силами южнокорейского партнера должно быть обеспечено строительство и управление пассажирским и грузовым терминалами, включая наземное обслуживание. За государственным партнером Uzbekistan Airports остается строительство и управление аэродромным комплексом (взлетно-посадочная полоса, перрон).
Открытый двухэтапный тендер на реализацию проекта «Модернизация и управление международным аэропортом Ургенч» по модели «Строительство, управление, передача» (Build-Operate-Transfer – BOT) был объявлен в августе 2024 года.

Открытый двухэтапный тендер на реализацию проекта «Модернизация и управление международным аэропортом Ургенч» по модели «Строительство, управление, передача» (Build-Operate-Transfer – BOT) был объявлен в августе 2024 года.
В тендере приняли участие восемь компаний, пять из них прошли во второй финальный этап, по итогам которого межведомственной тендерной комиссией и был определен победитель.
Проект реализуется Uzbekistan Airports совместно с Министерством транспорта и Министерством экономики и финансов Узбекистана

Сеульский аэропорт Инчхон обслужил 70,7 млн пассажиров в прошлом году и стал третьим крупнейшим аэропортом в мире по международному трафику (пропустив вперед только аэропорты Дубая и Лондона).
Компания Incheon International Airport Corp., аэропортовый оператор, принадлежит правительству Южной Кореи и выполнила более 30 проектов по развитию бизнеса в 15 странах.

🇰🇿 Крупнейший авиаперевозчик Казахстана Air Astana отложит начало полетов в США из-за очередной задержки с поставками новых дальнемагистральных самолетов Boeing 787, рассказал журналистам глава авиакомпании Питер Фостер.
«К сожалению, поставка задерживается ввиду общих проблем, которые на данный момент есть у Boeing», процитировало его слова издание Forbes Kazakhstan.
По словам главы Air Astana, начало поставок самолетов перенесено с конца 2025 на середину 2026 года. Перевозчик заказал три самолета Boeing 787-9 через лизинговую компанию Air Lease Corporation в 2022 году, в том числе, для открытия прямых авиаперелетов в США.
В 2024 году представители Федеральной авиационной администрации США (FAA) провели предварительный технический аудит Казахстана и Air Astana. Он стал первым шагом на пути получения статуса от FAA категории 1, необходимого для запуска прямого авиасообщения между Казахстаном и США.

LCC VietJet may serve Europe via Kazakhstan
🇰🇿 Europe is among the Vietnamese low-cost carrier VietJet’s primary international growth targets, revealed vice president for commercial Jay L. Lingeswara at recent Routes Asia 2025 event.
The budget airline is considering organizing flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to the European region (Czech Republic, France, Germany and the UK) with one stop option.
Potential transit points could include Kazakhstan, which has an open skies policy allowing foreign airlines to operate fifth freedom flights with. VietJet has experience flying to Almaty and Astana, and as recently as April 2 launched a new Da Nang-Astana route.
In addition, Sovico Group, the owner of VietJet, has interests in Kazakhstan. At the end of 2024, the company signed the purchase agreement to acquire a controlling stake in Qazaq Air, with the intention of transforming the regional airline into a significant player in the Central Asian market.
Also, in September 2024, Sovico signed memoranda on the joint development of local airports in Turkestan and Kyzylorda.

🇦🇿 In 2024, a total of 309,655 flights were served in the airspace of Azerbaijan (+30.8% year-on-year), the State Concern of Civil Aviation AZAL reported.
This includes 229,000 transit flights served by controllers of country’s air navigation services provider Azeraeronavigatsiya (AZANS, part of AZAL), representing an impressive 35.5% growth over prior year.
Azerbaijan's role as a transit country has increased significantly in recent years.
The airspace of the Caspian republic is becoming more and more attractive due to the crossing of air routes connecting Europe and Asia, as well as due to the fact that AZANS was able to quickly provide a safe and reliable air corridor for foreign airlines following start of a full-scale Russian-Ukrainian military conflict.
Compared to 2022, the number of transit flights in Azerbaijani airspace has doubled.

21 airlines to fly to Samarkand this summer
🇺🇿 A total of 21 airlines will serve Samarkand during summer navigation. This information was shared with CentralAsia+ Aero by Air Marakanda, the managing company of Samarkand Airport.
During the summer season, the gateway of the major tourist destination in Uzbekistan is expected to handle an average of 234 flights per week.
Several new routes will be added to the airport’s schedule:
• Russia’s Ural Airlines launched flights from Krasnoyarsk to Samarkand, operating once a week (from April 1);
• Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) resumed flights from Baku, operating twice a week (from April 2);
• China Southern Airlines, will resume flights from Urumqi to Samarkand, operating once a week (from April 7);
• Kazakh regional airline Qazaq Air will restart its Turkistan–Samarkand route, with two weekly flights (from May 1);
• the airport’s base carrier Air Samarkand will launch weekly flights to Tel Aviv (from May 4).
Additionally, Air Samarkand plans to increase flight frequencies to Sharm El-Sheikh this season and is considering launching new routes, including Tbilisi, Batumi, Baku, among others.

🇺🇿 Privately held Uzbeki carrier Centrum Air has selected an IT solution from local provider TurnaTech to offer travel agencies direct access to flight bookings and ancillary services via the airline’s own host system.
The carrier has launched Turna Gate API which enables secure integration between the airline’s inventory system and agencies. Its functionality allows agents to search, book, and sell tickets and ancillary services without GDS commission fees. It also supports automated exchanges and refunds.
“TurnaTech’s technology gives airlines the tools to reduce distribution costs, establish transparent and mutually beneficial relationships with agents, and improve the end-to-end service for travelers. We’re proud that Centrum Air is putting its trust in a local tech partner and investing in a direct distribution future,” said Hanan Lokshin, CEO of TurnaTech.
TurnaTech began operations in Uzbekistan in 2024 and is a resident of IT Park Uzbekistan. Its first local client was Fly Khiva airline, which implemented the Turna PSS passenger service system and the Turna Shop ticketing module in December 2024.

🇺🇿 21 авиакомпания будет выполнять полеты в Самарканд в летнюю навигацию. Об этом изданию CentralAsia+ Aero рассказали в компании Air Marakanda, которая управляет терминалом аэропорта этого города в Узбекистане.
Еженедельно в летнем сезоне воздушная гавань Самарканда будет обслуживать в среднем по 234 рейса.
В расписании аэропорта появятся новые рейсы:
• российская частная Ural Airlines открыла рейсы в Самарканд из Красноярска с частотой один раз в неделю (с 1 апреля );
• азербайджанский национальный перевозчик AZAL возобновил полеты из Баку, дважды в неделю (со 2 апреля);
• крупнейший китайский авиаперевозчик China Southern Airlines возобновит рейсы из Урумчи, раз в неделю (с 7 апреля);
• казахстанская региональная Qazaq Air возобновляет полеты по маршруту Туркестан – Самарканд, два раза в неделю с 1 мая;
• базовый перевозчик аэропорта, авиакомпания Air Samarkand, с 4 мая начнет еженедельные полеты в Тель-Авив.
Кроме того, Air Samarkand планирует в этом сезоне увеличить частоты полетов в Шарм-эль-Шейх и рассматривает запуск ряда новых маршрутов, включая Тбилиси, Батуми, Баку и другие направления.
За первый квартал 2025 года аэропорт Самарканда обслужил более 339 тыс. пассажиров, что на 16% больше, чем годом ранее. За этот период выполнено более 2,6 тыс. рейсов, а самыми популярными направлениями стали Москва, Стамбул, Санкт-Петербург, Джидда и Абу-Даби.

Central Asia’s aircraft fleet to grow by over 50 jets in two years
🇺🇿🇰🇿🇰🇬🇹🇯 In 2025–2026, the fleet of airlines in the countries of Central Asia could expand by more than 50 aircraft, according to publicly announced procurement plans by local carriers.
The majority of new aircraft will be delivered to the region’s largest aviation markets: Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Both countries have been steadily increasing their passenger traffic in recent years and are in need of additional capacity.
Earlier this year, Kazakhstan’s aviation authorities announced that local carriers would receive 14 new aircraft in 2025. Since January, five Airbus A320 family jets have already joined the fleets of national airline Air Astana and its low-cost subsidiary FlyArystan. Air Astana expects to receive several more narrowbodies before year-end, and add first long-haul Boeing 787s in 2026.
The country’s second-largest carrier, SCAT Airlines, plans to receive six Boeing 737NG/MAX narrowbodies in 2025 and two more MAX aircraft in 2026.
Meanwhile, following an investment deal with a Vietnamese investor, Qazaq Air may begin transitioning from turboprop DHC Dash 8s to jet-powered medium-haul Boeing 737 family aircraft. Cargo startup Alpha Sky, which already took delivery of its first Boeing Business Jet this year, is also expecting further fleet expansion.
In Uzbekistan, Centrum Air, a private airline, has the most ambitious expansion plans, announcing it would add 14 aircraft in 2025, including 12 Airbus A320ceo/neo narrowbodies and two widebody A330s. So far, it has received only one A320neo.
Its parent cargo carrier, My Freighter, recently added its first Boeing 757F to its all-Boeing 767 fleet and it aims to continue expanding capacity.
The country’s two largest airlines—state-owned Uzbekistan Airways and privately held Qanot Sharq — are each expecting to receive two Airbus A321neos in 2026.
Uzbekistan Airways’ regional subsidiary Silk Avia added its fourth L-410 turboprop earlier this year.
New cargo airline SkyGuard received its first Boeing 757F in 2025, while Spacebee Airlines, another young Uzbek carrier, added a second Boeing 767 and is expecting one more this year.
In Kyrgyzstan, state-owned Asman Airlines is set to receive two DHC Dash 8 turboprops in 2025. The airline is also discussing the lease of two medium-haul Airbus A320 or A321 jets for future flights to Europe, pending the country's removal from the EU’s air safety blacklist.

Kazakh air freight specialist Alpha Sky launches BBJ business charter services
🇰🇿 Kazakhstan-based privately held air cargo carrier Alpha Sky has announced the launch of charter passenger flights.
For this new venture, the airline will operate a Boeing Business Jet 737-700 outfitted with a VIP cabin configuration.
It accommodates 22 passengers and features a lounge area, office, conference room, private bedroom, two bathrooms with showers, and a fully equipped kitchen.
The business jet was received at the end of March and is based at Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC), the airline told CentralAsia+Aero.
“The new Boeing Business Jet 737-700 will allow the company to offer world-class flights—both individual and corporate,” the airline said in a statement.
Alpha Sky’s fleet also includes two Boeing 737-400s and one Boeing 757-200F freighters. These are used for freight operations across the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and Southeast Asia.

Saudi contractor to provide high-speed internet on Uzbekistan Airways’ A321neos
🇺🇿 Neo Space Group (NSG), a subsidiary of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), agreed to provide provide in-flight connectivity for upcoming Uzbekistan Airways’ Airbus A321neo narrowbodies. The Uzbekistan’s flag carrier leased these aircraft from SMBC Aviation Capital to support its growing long-haul network.
NSG’ IFC technology supports video streaming, real-time communication, and business productivity for travelers.
This solution is based on the SES Open Orbits network, which enables seamless switching between the provider’s own and leased satellites in different orbits to ensure continuous and uninterrupted coverage.
“Partnering with NSG to introduce state-of-the-art in-flight connectivity is a major milestone, ensuring that our travelers can stay connected, productive, and entertained throughout their flights. We believe that staying connected at 35,000 feet is no longer a luxury, but an essential part of the journey, and we are proud to bring this service to our valued passengers,” said Shukhrat Khudaykulov, Chairman of Uzbekistan Airways’ Board.
The new A321neo, line-fitted with high-speed IFC services, are scheduled to arrive to Uzbekistan in 2026.
Uzbekistan Airways already operates five A321neo LRs on long-range flights from Tashkent to Europe and Southeast Asia, alongside its Boeing 787 widebodies.
NSG has earlier agreed to install its satellite-based IFC systems on the upcoming Airbus A350 aircraft of Turkish Airlines, as well as THAI Airways' future A321neo and existing Boeing 777 fleets.

Uzbeki airline My Freighter Finds a Partner in Mexico
🇺🇿 Uzbekistan’s largest cargo carrier by fleet size, My Freighter, has signed an interline agreement with Mexican airline Aeromexico.
Effective from April 1, the agreement enables My Freighter to ship cargo on Aeromexico flights to Mexico City (MEX), Guadalajara (GDL), and Monterrey (MTY).
In return, the Mexican airline can now transport cargo to Tashkent airport (TAS) in Uzbekistan, with further distribution by trucks across Central Asia via Centrum Holding, My Freighter’s parent company.
“With AeroMexico’s extensive network and fleet of 8x B787-8s and 14x B787-9 Dreamliners, and My Freighter’s growing fleet of 7x B767-300BCFs plus a newly added B757-200F, we are unlocking new routes and greater efficiency for our customers around the world,” the Uzbek airline said in a statement.
Currently, My Freighter can deliver cargo to North America, including several major U.S. airports, thanks to a previous interline agreement signed with American Airlines. The air freight specialist also has similar agreements with the Challenge Group and Spain’s Air Europa.

Azerbaijan Airlines’ quarterly traffic grew despite suspension of flights to Russian destinations
🇦🇿 AZAL, Azerbaijan's flag carrier has managed to increase passenger traffic for the first quarter of 2025 despite the suspension of flights to a number Russian destinations.
In the first three months since the beginning of the year, the airline carried 865,000 passengers, 7% more than in the same period last year.
The number of destinations decreased to 48 (from 53) as a result of the suspension of flights to a number Russian destinations on safety concerns. The number of flights operated increased by 4% to 3,718.
The punctuality rating was 89%, having improved by 1 p.p. year-on-year, with March on-time performance rating reaching 93%.
Azerbaijan Airlines said it “continues its efforts to expand its route network, enhance service quality, and maintain the highest standards of safety and comfort”.
Starting early April AZAL has resumed regular flights from Baku to Samarkand (Uzbekistan), and to expand the geography of flights to Turkey, launching direct flights from Baku to Chukurova International Airport, located between the cities of Adana and Mersin since June.
