Often dark forces influence a person. When a person does not hear the Guardian Angel, then the evil force approaches, we are inevitably surrounded by demons. But the closer a person is to God, the purer morally, the further away the evil spirits are. They cannot do anything if a person lives honestly, prays. But when a person loses contact with God, loses prayer, then the devil instills in him all sorts of evil thoughts, evil intentions and actions.

Saint Paphnutius the Ascetic
A disciple of Saint Anthony the Great, the venerable Paphnutius struggled in the austerity of the Egyptian desert in the fourth century, during the early years of Christian monasticism. Seeking illumination and union with God, Paphnutius renounced the world and in his holiness he was more like a bodiless angel than a carnal man. The saint led many sinners to repentance, most famously the former harlot Thais. He documented the lives of the desert dwellers, including that of Saint Onuphrios the Great. Chosen to become bishop of the Thebaid, Paphnutius attracted the wrath of the Christ-hating emperor Maximinus, who gouged out the saint's eye, mutilated his leg, and sent him to labor in the mines for his refusal to renounce Christ. Surviving this persecution, Paphnutius was shown great respect by Saint Emperor Constantine and was invited to participate in the first Council of Nicaea, where the pre-eternal divinity of Christ was acknowledged and the Creed of the Faith was established.
