🔴Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Vietnam, Malaysia and Cambodia on April 14-18 to protect common value chains and mutual supply of goods and services.
🔴After the outbreak of the US-China trade war, Beijing has made extensive use of the SEA to enter the US market. Chinese companies rerouted their goods through countries in the region, from where they were re-exported after minimal processing under the guise of local products, and also set up their production facilities there. Between 2017 and 2024, China's share of US imports decreased by 8.3 pp (from 21.6% to 13.3%), while ASEAN's share increased by 5.4 pp (from 6.8% to 12.2%). Chinese direct investment in ASEAN manufacturing tripled in 2023 compared to 2017 (from $4.9 billion to $15.2 billion).
🔴This policy was jeopardized after D. Trump introduced tariffs on goods from SEA in April. One of the key conditions for the revision of tariff barriers is the solution of the problem associated with the entry of Chinese goods into the US market. In a joint statement, the region's economic ministers expressed concern that unilateral restrictions would "impede ASEAN's economic progress." Nevertheless, in their reactions, SEA countries showed a willingness to engage in dialogue with the US.
🔴Xi's visit was intended to demonstrate to Southeast Asian leaders the advantages of cooperation with Beijing over engagement with Washington in terms of economic benefits and predictability. In each country, the Chinese leader noted the geographic commonalities among Asian states, emphasized historical ties, denounced US protectionist policies, and stressed the prospects for cooperation with the PRC.
🔴Against the backdrop of US tariffs, 113 different economic agreements were signed during the Chinese leader's trip (45 in Vietnam, 31 in Malaysia, 37 in Cambodia).
🔴With the decoupling of the US and PRC economies resulting in the disruption of value-added and supply chains, Xi Jinping's trip to Southeast Asia was aimed at minimizing the damage from countries in the region being forced to comply with US demands.
🔴Complying with these demands would lead to a decline in the economic growth and competitiveness of ASEAN economies. According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the share of Chinese value-added in Vietnamese exports is 20-25% (including electronics - 30-40%), Malaysia - 12-15%, Cambodia - 35-40%.

The Trump administration could irrationally retaliate once again by imposing de-listing on the 200 or so Chinese companies listed on Wall Street. Scott Bessent has confirmed that this option is on the table.
But the most important companies have dual listing on Wall Street AND Hong Kong, which reduces their risk of losing access to investors.
The fact that Chinese companies now may have to finance themselves in Hong Kong will leave Beijing unfazed. It will only strengthen the Hong Kong stock market in the first place.
The first casualties will be the millions of American investors who own these Chinese shares: another American own goal in the making.

🔴Israeli Prime Minister B. Netanyahu has broken the phased ceasefire agreement and resumed hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
🔴Israel has not achieved any of its stated objectives, as Hamas has maintained the government structure it created in Gaza and is holding 59 hostages, 24 of whom are believed to be alive, as an insurance card.
🔴Netanyahu believes that any ceasefire process must end with the elimination of Hamas. The group obviously refuses to participate in a peace process that would involve its destruction. The stalemate continues through the fault of the Israeli leadership.
🔴After the meeting between B. Netanyahu and US President D. Trump in Washington on April 8, Israel called for the complete disarmament of the group without any commitment by Tel Aviv to end the war or withdraw from Gaza, which is tantamount to capitulation. Hamas has refused. Israel appears to be deliberately stalling in order to release the hostages while keeping the military action on hold.
🔴The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have had time to recover from the shock of October 7. Hamas currently lacks the capability to launch a large-scale attack on Israel or a massive rocket attack on Israeli territory. The IDF continues to bomb Lebanon with impunity, has occupied much of southern Syria, and has declared its intention to remain there as long as it sees fit. In the midst of these successes, Netanyahu is behaving increasingly aggressively. According to the UN, following the resumption of hostilities in Gaza, the humanitarian situation there is now the worst in 18 months.
🔴The IDF has presented the government with a plan to redeploy several divisions to Gaza, carry out a new mobilization of reservists, transfer the residents of the northern parts of the enclave to the exclusion zone in the south, and complete the military occupation of the entire Gaza Strip. Defense Minister I. Katz has set up a special administrative unit in his ministry to facilitate the "voluntary" emigration of Palestinians, while Netanyahu's coalition partners have proposed the expulsion of most Gazans and the restoration of Jewish settlements there.
🔴Israel's far right believes its day has come, but it has no reason to be overly optimistic. Hamas, despite the blows it has taken, is far from defeated. Its leaders are rebuilding the group's position.
🔴The reoccupation of Gaza will result in more military casualties and more hostages. According to recent polls, about 70% of Israelis support an agreement with Hamas to release all remaining hostages, even if it means strengthening the positions of Palestinian organizations and releasing thousands of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails.
🔴Pursuing military plans to occupy Gaza carries serious political risks. Tens of thousands of reservists are considering refusing to serve. The protest in their ranks is also linked to the government's attempts to maintain the exemption of the ultra-Orthodox from military service for the future.
🔴Netanyahu is forced to maneuver to maintain a balance of interests in the governing coalition to prevent its collapse and avoid early elections. All his efforts are aimed at retaining the office of prime minister.
