U.S. Secretary of the Navy John C. Phelan continued his tour of naval shipyards across the United States today, visiting General Dynamics Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine, which currently produces Arleigh Burke-Class Guided-Missile Destroyers for the U.S. Navy. Today’s visit followed an announcement Wednesday by Secretary Phelan while touring shipbuilding facilities in Hampton Roads, Virginia, that all shipbuilding contracts are currently “under review” due to shipbuilding shortfalls, describing the current state of naval shipbuilding as a national emergency which he states is “unacceptable.”

According to Reuters, a senior Iranian official has said that Iran’s leader, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has a number of red lines that he has “mandated” to the Iranian negotiating team that must be adhered to.

For the first time since the fall of the Assad Regime last December, Syrian Air has officially announced the resumption of direct commercial flights to and from Damascus and the cities of Dubai and Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) beginning Sunday, April 20. This announcement follows last week visit by Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa to the UAE; followed by the Emirati General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) approving the resumption of flights between the Gulf Nation and Syria, though so far no UAE-based airlines have announced any planned flights to Damascus.

According to a release from the French General Staff and EUNAVFOR ASPIDES, on an unspecified date, a FREMM multi-mission frigate of the French Navy shot down a Houthi drone at close range in the Red Sea. Footage from the engagement shows the frigate using its 76mm main gun to engage the drone. Not a lot of details were given on the engagement, nor was the name of the vessel disclosed. However, only two French FREMM multi-mission frigates, FS Alsace (D656) and FS Languedoc (D653), could have been involved.

According to officials familiar with planning for the negotiations, the Iranian delegation for Saturday’s indirect talks with the United States in Oman, is expected to be led by Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi; while the American delegation will be led by U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff. White House Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff has now walked back his comments last night on Fox News that described a conceptual Iran proposal eerily reminiscent of the failed Obama-era JCPOA (Iran Deal) framework. About an hour ago, Ambassador Witkoff returned to the Trump administration’s previous sentiments on the process, saying that “Iran must stop and eliminate its nuclear enrichment and weaponization program.”
