On February 21, 1913, Ioannina became a part of Greece again after 483 years of occupation at the Battle of Bizani
During the Balkan Wars, the Epiros Army was set to be entirely defensive. After the liberation of Thessaloniki, this position changed. Despite being outnumbered, Major Sapountzakis broke his longstanding defensive orders, and went on the offense.
After several failed attempts, Major Sapountzakis was relieved of command, and Prince Constantine assumed control. Under his directive, the Greek army started the largest artillery bombardment in history up until that point, and sent 3 infantry divisions to completely encircle the ottoman forces, preventing them from ever being able to retreat. At 11pm, Esad Pasha would agree to an unconditional surrender. Constantine would enter Ionnina as the Liberator, Esad would return to Turkey as a hero as well somehow.
At the end of the battle, the ottomans lost 2,800 men while 8,600 were captured. Greece only suffered 500 casualties.
