From the 1 May 2025, all test takers must complete their IELTS on Paper test using a black ink pen instead of a pencil. IELTS is making this change to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the answer script scanning process so that they can get the results to test takers as quickly as possible.
Pens will be provided by the test centre, and all test takers must adhere to the new guidelines; otherwise, they will not be allowed to take the test. Test takers will not be allowed to enter the test room with any writing stationery. If test takers are found with pencils or other personal stationery in the test room, these items must be collected by the venue staff and will only be returned after the completion of the last component of the test. Papers will not be marked and will lead to disqualification from the test and a ban from taking IELTS for 5 years.

P.S.: The change will happen in both IDP and British Council.
