In many Islamic societies, a woman’s worth is still tightly bound to her virginity—an outdated ideal that has fueled a toxic cycle of stigma, inequality, and social problems. While modesty and morality are deeply valued in the culture, the fixation on physical virginity has created damaging consequences, particularly for divorced women and young girls.

Divorced women, regardless of their character or life circumstances, often face immense social scrutiny when seeking remarriage. The assumption that they are “less pure” renders them undesirable in a culture where many men prioritize virginity over compatibility, integrity, or emotional maturity. This obsession creates a tragic paradox: women are encouraged to marry young, yet once divorced—often through no fault of their own—they become marginalized.

This imbalance contributes to a disturbing trend: the growing pursuit of younger, often underage, brides. Do not believe those nonsense claims that there are more women than men, this is not true. Studies show the opposite. There are more men than women. This, older men struggle to find “untouched” women within their age range, some turn to minors, perpetuating a cycle of exploitation masked as tradition. Meanwhile, millions of intelligent, capable divorced women remain sidelined—not because of who they are, but because of a narrow, physical standard tied to outdated honor codes.

This issue is about faith as well as culture. While The Prophet Muhammad himself married divorced and widowed women—he also married Aisha as a child bride and waited until she was ready to take her virginity. And we have many Hadiths on that. But maybe more damning is this Hadith.

"Allah's Messenger (PBUH) said to me, "Have you got married O Jabir?" I replied, "Yes." He asked "What, a virgin or a matron?" I replied, "Not a virgin but a matron." He said, "Why did you not marry a young girl who would have fondled with you?" I replied, "O Allah's Messenger (PBUH)! My father was martyred on the day of Uhud and left nine (orphan) daughters who are my nine sisters; so I disliked to have another young girl of their age, but (I sought) an (elderly) woman who could comb their hair and look after them." The Prophet (PBUH) said, "You have done the right thing."

Did you know that Islam allows taking women as war bounty sex slaves?! I heard growing up hearing the term Sabayah
(سبايا)
and I did not understand it. It sounded like women who the Khalifa or wealthy men have on the side as extra-marital legal in a way under Islam. Always presented on the side line of fun or comedy TV sketches. What I did not expect is the horror of what this really means. It is the selling, buying, and owning of women as sex slaves usually taken as war bounty. Where did this trade come from? It comes from the term Melk Alymein

or what your right hand possess. Mentioned in the Quran at least 14 times: Quran [4:23-24];[16:71]; [23:5-6]; [24: 31-33-58]; [30:28]; [33:50- 52 -55]; [70:27-30] And as you can see confirmed in the Hadith.

How can an all-knowing and all-merciful Allah allow the "Owning of Humans" and owning of women as sex objects! It is, if anything, evidence the Quran is man made for men.

It is from these Quranic verses that ISIS sold Yazidi women as slaves, girls as young as infants were sold. The records now show what happened to them. Think, Muhammad did the same thing. How beautiful...how peaceful...how example for ALL humanity.

I grew up believing Shariah would bring a perfect society. But as I matured, I realised it’s a 7th-century legal system rooted in a very different world. For all its lofty ideals, it is ultimately enforced by humans—flawed, biased, and fallible. In modern justice systems, wrongful convictions can be reversed. But how do you undo a hand amputation? An execution? A stoning? You can’t. There’s no compensation for irreversible punishment.

Shariah law also struggles with modern values like gender equality and freedom of expression. In many interpretations, a woman’s testimony is worth half a man’s. Apostasy and blasphemy are treated as capital crimes. How can that exist in a time where human rights and individual freedoms are universal principles?

Another problem is practicality. Even countries that call themselves "Islamic" don’t implement Shariah fully. Why? Because it doesn’t function in a complex, modern society with diverse populations, global economies, and international laws. If it worked, you’d expect the most peaceful, progressive, and just societies to be those who apply it fully. But that’s clearly not the case.

One of the things that disturbs me most is the insistence on same-day burial. Sure, it made sense in the desert 1,400 years ago without refrigeration. But today, rushing burials can destroy crucial forensic evidence. Anyone familiar with criminology knows how many murders could go undetected because the body is gone before anyone can ask questions.

Islam is a product of its time. I understand why some seek it for spiritual aspects due to existential concerns, but its legal system is not fit for the 21st century. But here is the problem, Quran makes it clear you cannot separate those two!

And for 1400 years, the same claim kept being recycled every time it experienced heavy rain. Enough of this - let's move to the following claim.

Reason 56: Green Mecca is a sign of "End of Time"

Every time it rains heavily in Mecca, or it experiences a flood, shortly after this event, the surrounding areas is transformed, for a couple of weeks, to a beautiful meadows and rivers. Before you blink, social media is flooded with videos of Islamic Dawah recycling an old claim that this event is the sign: “Yum Al Qiyyama of near!!” meaning – the resurrection day is near.

Where does this claim come from? It comes from Sahih Muslim 157c.

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) as saying:

The Last Hour will not come before wealth becomes abundant and overflowing, so much so that a man takes Zakat out of his property and cannot find anyone to accept it from him and till the land of Arabia reverts to meadows and rivers.

For the following few weeks, social media is flooded with pictures of meadows, green mountains, green valleys, and even deserts covered with plants. You also get people panicking, people claiming this is the time, the time has come. Fast forward a few months, nothing happens, and everyone forgets. A few years later, the same phenomenon occurred, and the same "recycling" of the claim started again. What is the explanation for this? Is Arabia and Mecca turning green an unusual thing? Well, facts debunk this claim. First of all, in my lifetime alone, I have seen at least a dozen times floods and rains turn Mecca green. Doing my research shows the following:

Flooding and heavy rains have been recurring events since records began in Mecca due to its geographical location nestled around mountains, which funnel rainwater into the city. Historical records indicate that by 1965, Mecca had experienced 89 significant rainfalls, and the most recent severe flooding occurred in 1941. This flood saw water levels in the Grand Mosque area rise to approximately two meters, submerging parts of the Kaaba and prompting some worshippers to perform Tawaf by swimming. What happens after these floods or rains? The whole area turns lush green with meadows and rivers for weeks. This is not unique to Mecca or Saudi Arabia, as this phenomenon has been recorded in deserts worldwide. What is more, the issue of heavy rainfall prompted the Saudi government to build modern infrastructure and drainage to manage it. So, in other words, it is not unusual at all.

You may argue, the repeated floods and rains is a ‘recent’ event thus would that not be the “sign”. Not really. As we indicated, at least 89 recorded floods and heavy rains have occurred. Here are some notable ones:

- The earliest recorded flood in the Islamic era occurred around 638 CE (17 AH) during the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab, which inundated the Grand Mosque and the Kaaba area.
- 779 CE (162 AH) during the Abbasid era.
- 1039 CE, which caused one of the Kaaba's walls to collapse.
- 1630 CE, floods damaged the Kaaba, leading to the complete reconstruction in 1631.
- 1941 CE, when floodwaters reached approximately 2 meters in the Grand Mosque area.

And after each one of these events, there would have been people scaremongering that the ‘sign’ of end of time is here because the whole area around Mecca would have been transformed into meadows.

In recent decades, Mecca has continued to face heavy rain incidents reported in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2014, 2021, and as recently as January 2024. However, with social media invention, this scaremongering has been amplified with videos and images of the green Mecca as if this has never happened before and it is a sign of the doom!

Research shows that climate change has affected Saudi Arabia more so than many countries. Its average temperature has gone up by 2.5'C / 4.5'F in just 100 years and it is projected to continue to get higher and Saudi Arabia, and the country is going to get drier.

The Golden Age of Islam, typically dated from the 8th to the 13th century, marked a flourishing of culture, science, and intellectual life under the Abbasid Caliphate, particularly centered in Baghdad’s House of Wisdom. This period shift away from expansion and religion and saw a gradual shift where worldly pursuits such as philosophy, art, music, and even wine-drinking became prominent, often diverging from strict religious fundamentalism.

Art and music, often seen as haram, thrived under caliphal support. Music flourished in courts and urban centers, with instruments like the oud, qanun, and ney shaping a rich tradition. Poets and musicians, such as Abu Nuwas, celebrated wine, love, and revelry in their compositions, performed in taverns and palaces. Sufi mysticism further elevated music as a spiritual practice, despite occasional clerical disapproval.

Philosophy—especially Greek philosophy translated into Arabic—was central. Thinkers like Al-Farabi, Avicenna (Ibn Sina), and Averroes (Ibn Rushd) integrated Aristotelian logic with Islamic theology, often provoking backlash from religious scholars who also considered Philosophy haram! Intellectual freedom extended at times to open discussions of atheism, apostasy, and criticism of religious dogma. Poets like Abu Nuwas famously celebrated wine and earthly pleasures, reflecting elite culture’s growing secularism. Nuwas’s bacchanalian verses and tales of taverns in Baghdad highlight a permissive attitude toward alcohol, despite religion. This reflected a broader cultural openness, with interfaith mingling and a focus on worldly pleasures over religion.

This cultural high point ended when Mongol sack of Baghdad in 1258, which shattered the Abbasid political power. This was seen as self fullfiling prophecy of the "end of time" but nothing came of it. Other factors included internal theological backlash—led by scholars like Al-Ghazali—who argued that excessive philosophy, art, and liberalism endangered faith. The rise of more conservative movements also played a role in reasserting fundamentalist control. And we went back to the dark ages.

So, what really bought about Golden Age of Islam was distancing ourselves from the fundamentals of Islam, openness, patronage, and cultural integration rather that cultural domination or fundamentalism of Islam.

No one needs to shout to convince you that 1 + 1 = 2.

But they will need to shout and scream when they want to brainwash you that 1 + 1 = 11. Why?

Shouting leaves no space for you to apply logical reasoning as your brain gets overwhelmed with the animated emotions of the shouting speaker!

I grew up believing that all other faiths engage in brainwashing, but in Islam there is no brainwashing.

In Islam we engage the mind with logic and reasoning. We don't just accept things, we discuss them within red lines. What I did not realise is that we were living inside a filter bubble - a bubble where we could discuss things like how do we know Allah exists (the answer has to be always yes), what type of hijab is correct, what is hallal to eat, is this Hadith authentic, and if I swim will that invalidate my fasting? In the world of critical thinking and reasoning, we were given a small sandbox and told "You are allowed to play here."

Anytime we tried to leave and explore beyond, it was like "haaaayyy where are you going??? Go back to your sandbox now"

Here are some of the red lines:

- How come ISIS, AlQaida, Bokoharam, Talban, Wahabies, Brotherhood, and other terrorist cite the Quran and Hadith?

- What does ملك اليمين "What does 'your right hand possess' mean?" What do you mean these are women prisoners of war distributed as war bounty among the fighters for sex use?

- Why did Allah allow Muhammad to have unlimited wives when Allah's destiny was to make him childless (no male heir) like Essa (Jesus) and not like Abraham or Moses? Jesus did not have even one wife!

- How come we say we are the religion of peace, but other faiths don't have so many terrorist groups like us?

- Why do I see 11 verses in the Quran that clearly say the earth is flat like a rug, carpet, bed, sheet, cover, and spread? Dahaha is a verb, cannot mean an ostrich egg!

- What do you mean this year is the end of time? What do you now change your mind and say next year is the end of time? What do you mean now you have another sign it is the end of time? Haven't people been talking about the end of time being "this year" for 1400 years???

- Why do we start teaching religion and sectarianism so early? If Islam is innate to believe in Allah, why not let them find their way? How can we claim our faith is innate but we need to teach it aggressively anyways? What if we are brainwashed into Islam?

My brothers and sisters know exactly what I am talking about...

If Islam has strong and convincing arguments, there would not be apostasy laws. Hardly anyone would leave. If Islam is secured in its knowledge and does not have anything to hide, it will welcome critics to challenge it openly without intimidation or threats. But believing in Islam is a process of brainwashing that is repeated throughout our lives where they tell us "We have perfect arguments. Islam is the perfect message by the perfect messenger that is sent to the perfect God." Yet, parallel to that and without flinching, we are told "Anyone who leaves Islam, anyone who criticises Islam, and under Shariah, anyone who does not fast, pray, or abide by Islam - they have to be executed!"

If you read those two statements and cannot see there is a problem, you suffer from a condition called "Doublethink". First introduced in the book 1984, it talks about the brainwashing process used by authoritarian governments to make you believe anything even when the facts are completely contradictory to each other. Islam is the authoritarianism of the brain. That makes most Mu'mens (not all) believe that it is a "religion of peace" but simultaneously believe every apostate and critic should be terminated as per Shariah Law - " And we will be watching. And we are proud of that," - as infamously said by that 🤡 Ali Dawah.

Imagine you really had the perfect religion. Not a single scientific or logical issue, not a single embarrassing verse of underage marriages or owning women as slaves, filled with real and marvellous scientific miracles that scientists are actually finding answers from it and not "scientists discover something and we twist the verses to make them sound like they are talking about it!'

Just imagine a perfect messenger who loved anyone, never owned a slave, demanded all slavery abandoned immediately, married one person because of her character not looks, over the age of 18, and together as equals they spread this perfect message! They say you judge the tree by the fruits it produces - and so far "the religion of peace " is proving to be a poisonous fruit that harms more people than any other major religion. And if you examine it independently from emotions, Islam has all the hallmarks of a cult. From the strict adherence to rules, to severe punishments for apostasy, and reverence of its leader who we should include in every prayer long side god, treasure everything he said or did - but simultaneously declared he is not a god but a humble human being. Welcome to Islam the religion of doublethink.

Moderates are right when they say they have been the biggest victims of Islamic fundamentalists. They too are responsible for it. They refuse to allow open debate, liberty to express lack of faith, for only then we are able to debate the extremist and shocking content of Islam. And having more irreligious, agnostics, and atheists in our society is healthy in allowing a challenge to the fundamentalists narrative. We need doubt in our faith, we need to question what we see, we need to have a balance of faith whereby people know Islam is not perfect but let's see what happens.

The person blowing himself has blind faith that their religion is absolutely perfect, the person joining these terrorist groups has blind faith their religion is perfect and is reading the Quran literally as a manual. If they had even 0.001% of a doubt, they would not do it, they would not pull that trigger! And that is why we need to challenge Islam! Sometimes moderates don't realise they are not helping!
