From a friends private post copied from FB, at the back of my mind, the fragility of our extremely complex but totally energy dependent systems does freak me out if I dwell on it.

WTF! POWER OUTAGE!
Across 3 countries!!!
Until you’re country loses all power you really don’t fully understand all the ways this impacts you!
For me that meant power and water was out and I live on the 3rd floor.
I was one of the lucky ones as I have a campervan but I didn’t have water, my fuel was empty but thankfully I always have a full 5 litre Jerry can - because I couldn’t buy diesel because I didn’t have any cash!!!
I was able to drive to a drinking water spring water tap to fill up 60 litres of drinking water for my campervan and carried 3 bags of stuff down 3 flights of stairs and filled up my campervan fridge with food from my apartment.
Internet kept totally dropping and normal phone service were down, satellite for maps was down - which is a massive problem when your new to a country!
As I drove around police cars where zipping around as heavens doors opened up to looters and thieves!
With people stuck in elevators (if I’d come back from the beach 30 mins earlier Bella and I could have been stuck in our building’s elevator!!).
I started to feel pretty freaked out at one point as the enormity of the situation hit me and the question as to WHY this was happening…
I now realise my rig, my set up with my campervan could become a target for desperate people if the power doesn’t go back on as most of the cooking equipment in the homes is electric!! No one can cook! No one can charge anything!!! So our fully off grid homes on wheels will be very much desired and when people get desperate they take extreme measures and justify it as ‘survival’!!!!
So I knew I had to get remote to be safe but without maps working I couldn’t find my way to my friends off grid land…
Thankfully this was a WARNING!
Power has apparently come back on in the Algarve - I’m still in my campervan parked up at a beach with other Vanlifers so I’ve no idea if my home has power again, others say they have power back so fingers crossed.
This highlighted what I’ve been saying for a long time, we are FRAGILE! We are soooo co dependent on systems!!! And I do not want to be! Which is why I built my campervan and lived fully off grid last summer, to harden myself up to living without these co dependent conditions, so I’m much more prepared than most but this showed me I CANNOT drop the ball! I messed up! My tank was not full, I didn’t have any cash and my water reservoir was empty!!! No way that’s happening again!!! Lesson/warning learnt!
Let this be a warning to us all!
One day power will go, water won’t reach many homes, WiFi goes, phone reception goes and shops can’t serve us as everything has gone digital !!! If you don’t have cash your fucked!
Get a black out emergency pack made up, canned foods, dried foods, nuts etc. Don’t let your vehicle tank run empty, have candles and some back up fuel and water in your home and cash!!!!!”

I can barely go to the bathroom or shower with a baby or a toddler and I'm a very type A person with endless energy.
How does a woman homeschool with babies and toddlers around
I don't understand the logistics.
There's some basic stuff I wanna do with my 9 year old and I find myself saying "...when. how .."
I have to punt everything to the summer when i have family helpers and my husband is very involved and helps a lot.
I don't know
I want to know
Maybe it's just another level of womanhood I have not unlocked! Very humbling.
I can barely go to the bathroom or shower with a baby or a toddler and I'm a very type A person with endless energy.

👆👆Always have a kit with water purification tablets, a couple of life straws, hand crank radio, some cash, and portable USB chargers always charged. And printed maps. I've been saying it for a long time on the map front. You can't rely on sat nav when the cack hits the fan
If you intend to sit it out at home and can afford it, a genny is good but people will steal them if desperate! Alternative cooking by way of bbq or camping stove will work for home but don't forget you are going to lose all food in the fridge and freezer if the power is off for an appreciable amount of time so have a stock of dried and canned goods. If you get a chance and can fill the bath with water as things go wrong, do it, but remember there is often no warning of these major power outages
If you are going to evacuate the home and go on the road if something like yesterday happens, you should always have a mini first aid kit, mini camping stove (they are tiny) and a couple of jet boils in addition to the water tablets, life straws and maps. Matches and lighters as well and a small box of tinder. We camp so keep this stuff in a small plastic box so it's all together with sleeping bags and a couple of axes and other small tools
We've tried not to rely on batteries too much as if you store them they can be corroded when you eventually come to use them, so prepare for that too
I'm pretty sure that a week without power would lead to total chaos. Some people would pull together but many others wouldn't and would resort to harming and stealing and justify this as survival. So it's good to be prepared
