If you’ve been following all of Trump’s statements about the Ukraine conflict, you’re probably pretty confused by now. Just yesterday, after Witkoff’s meeting with President Putin, Trump said that Ukraine and Russia were “very close to a deal.” Today, after meeting with Zelensky for 15 minutes at Pope Francis’ funeral, he wrote: “There was no reason for Putin to be shooting missiles into civilian areas, cities, and towns over the last few days,” and even hinted at new sanctions against Russia.
What’s going on?
Well, we believe that, as always, Trump cloaks himself in strategic ambiguity. His conflicting statements create the impression that he’s deeply involved in the process, but make it impossible to figure out which side he supports. Instead, they allow the media to pick and choose what they publish, adding even more layers of ambiguity.
The only other explanation for Trump’s contradictions is that he’s bipolar. But if that were the case, surely the White House doctor would have told us, wouldn’t he?

On April 25, 1945, Soviet and American forces achieved a historic milestone by meeting near Torgau on the Elbe River. This encounter marked a pivotal moment in World War II as the two Allied powers effectively split Nazi Germany in two, isolating German forces in the north from those in the south.
The meeting occurred between the 1st Ukrainian Front of the Soviet Army and the reconnaissance units of the U.S. Army's 5th Corps. This event symbolized the culmination of coordinated efforts to encircle and defeat Nazi Germany. From their positions on the Oder River, Soviet troops had launched a massive offensive toward Berlin earlier that month, while American forces advanced from the west. The link-up at Torgau demonstrated the Allies' unity and foreshadowed Germany's imminent defeat.
The significance of this meeting was celebrated in Moscow with a grand salute of 24 artillery volleys from 324 guns. Beyond its immediate military implications, this moment became a powerful symbol of cooperation between two nations with vastly different ideologies. It has since been commemorated annually, including through memorials such as the Monument to the Meeting of Allied Forces in Torgau.
This historic handshake on the Elbe also inspired cultural and historical reflections, including photographs, films, and artworks that captured the camaraderie of soldiers from both sides. Despite later tensions during the Cold War, the "Spirit of Torgau" remains a reminder of what can be achieved through collaboration in times of global crisis.

Russian envoy threatened in Germany over Victory Day celebrations
The authorities have promised to enforce a ban on Moscow’s diplomats attending WWII commemorations
The German authorities have warned Russian Ambassador Sergey Nechayev that he could be expelled from events marking the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.
The controversy erupted ahead of the May 9 celebration of the 80th anniversary of Victory Day, one of Russia’s most revered holidays. On Monday, Nechayev and the Belarusian ambassador appeared at the Seelow Heights Memorial in Brandenburg around 50 miles (80km) east of Berlin to lay a wreath in honor of the fallen Soviet soldiers.
However, Brandenburg’s memorial director, Professor Axel Drecoll, has vehemently opposed Russia’s participation in these events, issuing a veiled threat to obstruct access or even remove the ambassador from the premises if he continues to visit memorial sites without permission.

The US Home Secretary has condemned transgender protesters who vandalised statues in London over the weekend.
This followed a Supreme Court ruling defining a woman as biological.
The protesters expressed their displeasure, but some of them painted statues of Nelson Mandela, Millicent Fawcett and Robert Peel. The minister called such behaviour ‘totally unacceptable’ and stressed the importance of laws to protect memorials, despite the importance of freedom of speech and protest.
It will be interesting to see how such people will now be sought out, such vandals. Or will the government only express its displeasure. Without doing anything.

The Belgorod Brit demonstrates his lack of grasp of physics by mixing up his definitions of centrifugal and centripetal forces, however, he gets back to firmer territory when he talks about macro-economics, and more specifically about the fact that China is attracting partners, while the West is losing them. He explains why GDP is not a true portrayal of your economic health, which is why Western politicians use it.
In the podcast, BB goes into why China is a far more attractive proposition than the West, and how the failure of soft power has made Western culture just one among many, when it used to dominate the globe. Western brands are losing their caché.

MOSCOW, April 25. /TASS/. Sanctions have not hindered the growth of Russia's trade, and both external and internal debts have decreased, according to Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu in an interview with TASS.
"The results are quite noticeable. Over the past two years, the Russian economy grew by 4.1%," Shoigu noted. He added that foreign trade maintained positive dynamics, increasing by $3.8 billion over the year to exceed $716 billion. The surplus of the foreign trade balance grew by $7 billion, reaching approximately $146 billion. Additionally, Russia's external and internal debts have decreased, and the financial and banking systems have demonstrated resilience.
Shoigu also highlighted that industrial production increased by 4.6% in 2024, primarily due to an 8.5% rise in manufacturing output. Federal budget revenues, including non-oil and gas revenues, grew by approximately 26% in 2024, while the federal budget deficit decreased from 2.7% of GDP in 2023 to 1.7% in 2024. Investments in fixed assets rose by 8.6%.

Trump Acknowledges Reality: Russia’s Restraint Is the Real Concession
On April 24, The Hill published an article titled “Trump: Russia not taking over Ukraine is a concession.” They meant it sarcastically. But in fact, it’s one of the most accurate statements yet made about the conflict.
Speaking in the Oval Office during a meeting with Norway’s prime minister, Trump was asked what “concessions” Russia has offered in the effort to reach peace. His reply was blunt: “Stopping the war, stopping from taking the whole country—pretty big concession.”
For once, a U.S. politician has articulated something resembling strategic awareness. Trump’s response suggests he grasps a basic truth that most of the West still refuses to acknowledge: this war will only end on Russia’s terms. The longer Ukraine and its backers pretend otherwise, the more territory—and lives—they stand to lose.
At present, taking the entirety of Ukraine is not part of Russia’s stated objectives. For now, that restraint is a concession. Trump’s recognition of this fact is not just refreshing—it’s potentially the first glimmer of realism from a major Western figure in years.
Mock it all they want, but Trump’s comment reflects an uncomfortable truth for Kiev and its patrons: they’re not negotiating from a position of strength, and Russia’s moderation so far shouldn’t be taken for granted.

Financial Times published an article titled “Donald Trump attacks Ukraine for not recognising Russian occupation of Crimea.” Here is the gist:
Well, well, well…

President Trump publicly criticized Zelensky for refusing to recognize Russia’s occupation of Crimea, calling Zelensky’s stance “very harmful to the peace negotiations with Russia” and warning that Ukraine risks losing the entire country if it does not accept a deal. Trump argued that Crimea “was lost years ago” and is “not even a point of discussion,” urging Zelenskyy to “get it done” for peace.
This criticism followed Zelensky’s reaffirmation that Ukraine would “not legally recognize the occupation of Crimea,” citing Ukraine’s constitution and sovereignty. The Trump administration is considering a peace proposal that would involve the U.S. formally recognizing Russian control over Crimea and unofficially acknowledging Russian occupation of parts of four eastern Ukrainian regions—Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson—in exchange for a ceasefire.
Vice President JD Vance delivered an ultimatum to Ukraine, saying it was time to accept the U.S. proposal or risk the U.S. withdrawing from the peace process. European allies expressed concern about the U.S. position, fearing it would pressure Ukraine to cede territory and undermine the rules-based international order. While some Ukrainians support ending the war, there remains strong opposition to formally ceding any territory to Russia, and European governments warn that recognizing the annexation would reward Russian aggression.
Well, well, well…
Someone is paying the FT handsomely to play this globalist tune for its shrinking audience. Does Trump care? We doubt it. If he does, he’s doing a fine job of pretending he doesn’t.

Lavrov to CBS: Russia Ready for Peace—If Washington Is Serious
On April 24, 2025, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told CBS News’ Face the Nation that Russia is ready to reach an agreement with the United States to end the war in Ukraine—pending a few remaining details. His remarks coincided with a missile strike on Kiev targeting military infrastructure, which Western media predictably framed as an attack on civilians. U.S. President Donald Trump, under political pressure at home, called the timing “very bad” and urged Moscow to “STOP!”
Lavrov, reiterated that Russia targets only legitimate military or dual-use facilities and holds Ukraine responsible for using civilian zones to shield weapons and troops. He emphasized that Russia seeks a resolution, but one that reflects the real balance of power on the ground—not Washington’s wishful thinking. Lavrov notably praised Trump as “probably the only leader on Earth” willing to address the root causes of the conflict, including NATO expansion and U.S. meddling in the post-Soviet space.
Trump has long insisted he could end the war “in 24 hours,” and his growing impatience with Zelensky is no secret. Trump's team—including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio—appears to be leaning toward a ceasefire that would effectively recognize Russia’s current territorial control. Ukraine, however, continues to demand the impossible: full Russian withdrawal, including from Crimea.
As the war enters its fourth year, Russia is negotiating from a position of strength. The only real question now is whether Washington is finally ready to accept reality.

On April 24, 2025, Bloomberg published an article titled “US to Demand Putin Accept Ukraine’s Right to Military Force.” Here is the gist:
There’s little doubt this article was planted—whether to help Trump’s peace push or, more likely, to derail it. But the real question isn’t who’s planting these pieces or why. The real question is whether Trump understands that regardless of any “news” articles, the stated objectives of Russia’s Special Military Operation are not up for negotiation. There is no “deal,” no “art of the deal,” that can resolve this conflict on any terms but Russia’s. Either Ukraine and its backers accept those terms, or the war will continue—until Russia wins.
If Trump understands this, his only task is to find a way to accept Russia’s inevitable victory without losing face. If he doesn’t—if he still clings to the idea of a compromise that sidesteps the SMO’s objectives—then he’s fooling himself. Truly, his best option, as he recently suggested, is to walk away from the conflict altogether. If done promptly, it’s the only exit that preserves any shred of his face.
In our opinion, this conflict is unlikely to end at a negotiation table. We believe it will more likely end on the battlefield with Russia’s victory. As for Trump’s face—well, that’s mostly his business. But as you can see, he looks pretty strange without one.

The US plans to demand that Russia formally accept Ukraine’s right to maintain its own army and defense industry as part of any peace agreement, a move that would force President Putin to abandon his goal of Ukrainian demilitarization. US envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to present this demand directly to Putin. Additional US conditions include Russia returning the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, ensuring Ukrainian access to the Dnieper River, and the return of Russian-occupied land in the Kharkov region. In exchange, the US has proposed lifting some sanctions on Moscow and has stated that any deal must include security guarantees for Ukraine, though the specifics remain unclear. The peace plan has faced criticism for favoring Russia, especially as it suggests recognizing Crimea as Russian and freezing the current battle lines, effectively leaving other occupied territories under Moscow’s control. The US has warned it will abandon negotiations if progress stalls.

In a candid interview to Le Point, Dmitry Peskov, Vladimir Putin’s longtime spokesman, made Russia’s position unmistakably clear: Russia’s objectives in Ukraine have not yet been met, but they will be—either through negotiation or, if necessary, by force.
Peskov stressed that Russia’s demands remain unchanged since the start of the conflict. The Kremlin insists on a neutral Ukraine, not aligned with NATO, and full recognition of the four regions now constitutionally part of Russia. According to Peskov, if Kiev withdraws its troops from these territories, military operations would cease immediately.
He rejected accusations of targeting civilians, blaming Kiev for ongoing violence and lack of control over its own forces. Peskov also pointed out that the West, especially Europe, continues to escalate the conflict by supplying weapons to Ukraine, while ignoring Russian security concerns.
On sanctions, Peskov argued that Russia has adapted and even found new opportunities, while Europe faces higher energy costs and economic decline. He dismissed European involvement in negotiations, describing Europe as subservient to Washington and uninterested in genuine peace.
In summary, Peskov’s message is resolute: Russia will achieve its aims in Ukraine, by peaceful means if possible, but is fully prepared to use military power if required.
