There's something inherently Aryan about the old days of NASCAR, that was lost upon the tragic death of Dale Earnhardt back at this very track in 2001. From its root in running moonshine in Appalachia, it harkens back to gladiatorial chariot races in Rome, and even further back to the Pontic Steppe I believe. I always get goosebumps watching the finish to this absolute classic, the 1979 Daytona 500. This video is of the last lap of that intense race... my Old Man would've been 19 when it took place, he remembers watching it. Donnie Allison out of the 'Alabama Gang' and Cale Yarborough out of South Carolina had the fastest cars that day, but...
Well watch the video lol, it's short.
This was the first televised "flag to flag" race in NASCAR's history, and was pivotal to the growing popularity of NASCAR & a ratings dream for CBS, who televised it.
