The Great Dune of Pilat in southwest France is the tallest sand dune in Europe, standing at 351 feet tall. It's nestled between a forest and the Atlantic Ocean, creating a dramatic landscape. The dune contains about 96 million tones of sand and continues to grow, engulfing nearby trees, plants, and even structures.
The climb to the top is a challenge due to the fine sand, but it's worth it for the breathtaking views of the Arcachon Bay, the expansive Landes pine forest, and, on clear days, the distant Pyrenees mountains. The dune is popular with paragliders, who take advantage of its height and winds.
Visitors can reach the dune by renting a bike in Arcachon and following the coastal trail, or by taking a train from Bordeaux to Arcachon, where buses are available. From there, two parking lots offer pedestrian paths and stairs to the dune.
