On this day in 1863, Stonewall Jackson's funeral procession left VMI at 10 am, and made way downtown to the Presbyterian church. More than 4,000 people crammed in and around the church for the service. The procession then moved south towards the cemetery, where Jackson was laid to rest with full military honors. He was buried in a plot next to Mary Graham, his daughter, and near his first wife and stillborn son.

Died defending Richmond and the Commonwealth. Both have now desecrated his memorials and spit on his grave. #LestWeForget

“General” William J. Bush, who died in Fitzgerald in 1952 at the age of 107, was the last surviving Confederate veteran in Georgia. The title of General was conferred later in life by the veterans groups in which he was so actively involved.

The Virginia Flaggers’ Rt. 360 Charlotte County Defenders Roadside Memorial Battle Flag was moved to a new location earlier this month. Just a few miles west of the original location, we are thrilled with the GREATLY improved visibility and new 20 year lease that will keep her flying for years to come! Many thanks to our dedicated volunteers for their hard work, for the Charlotte County Grays SCV Camp for partnering with us on this project, and to each of YOU whose generous support makes these projects possible!

General J.E.B. Stuart, a hero of Virginia and the South, entered heaven in this day, May 12, 1864, at 7:38 p.m.
He fell in defense of Richmond at the Battle of Yellow Tavern, and while mortally wounded on the battlefield shouted to retreating soldiers:
"Go back, go back, and do your duty, as I have done mine, and our country will be safe! Go back, go back! I had rather die than be whipped."
After being removed from the battlefield he was visited by Confederate President Jefferson Davis on his death bed. President Davis came in, took General Stuart's hand, and asked, "General, how do you feel?" Stuart answered "Easy, but willing to die, if God and my country think I have fulfilled my destiny and done my duty."
His last whispered words were: "I am resigned; God's will be done."
Today we remember our immortal hero J.E.B. Stuart and his sacrifice for the Cause of Southern Independence 🇸🇴

Yankee Devils ! This is a monument in South Carolina near the town of Chester.
Burrel Hemphill Monument Hopewell ARP Church, Olde English District
Burrel Hemphill, a slave in the household of Robert Hemphill during the War for Southern Independence, was reportedly tortured to death by Yankee troops for refusing to disclose the location of the family's silverware and other valuables. A monument erected in his honor reads: "In memory of Burrel Hemphill, Killed by Union soldiers February 1865. Although a slave, he gave his life rather than betray a trust. He was a member of Hopewell."
