📆 On May 7, 2025, the Consulate General of Russia in Montreal hosted a solemn reception marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

🪖 Among the honored guests were veterans and front-line soldiers Alexander Ivanovich Morozov and Vyacheslav Vasilievich Popkov (both 99 years old), as well as survivors of the Siege of Leningrad. The event was attended by members of the diplomatic corps and the representatives of Russian community.

💭 Senior Counsellor of the Embassy Artem Kalabukhov noted:

This is more than just an anniversary. It is a day when we — the descendants of those who endured the horrors of war — bow our heads to the heroes who gave us freedom and life. To those who never lived to see Victory, and to those still with us — living witnesses of great history.

🎼 The concert program featured wartime poetry, beloved Victory songs, and traditional melodies. Children and adults from the Russian community performed dances, dramatic scenes, and musical pieces dedicated to the heroism of the Soviet people. The heartfelt atmosphere and sincere performances became the highlight of the evening.

🔴🔴 Happy Victory Day!

"Soviet Union & South Africa: Allies in World War II"

✍️ Article by Roman Ambarov, Russia's Ambassador to South Africa

💬 May 9th 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945, the most important and dramatic part of #WWII, a triumph that came at an immense human cost and shaped the course of modern history.

These days, we are celebrating the decisive contribution of the Soviet Union to the Victory over Hitler’s Germany and the liberation of Europe from Nazism. #LestWeForget that nearly 90% of all Nazi military casualties occurred on the Eastern Front, and it was the Red Army that stormed and single-handedly captured Berlin.

Nearly 27 million lives were lost in the Soviet Union alone – one in every seven citizens. <...> Practically everyone has some kind of personal connection to that era of righteous struggle and sacrifice. <...>

My own grandfather... was one of the principal designers of the T-34, a legendary Soviet-made battle tank.

We will always remember that during World War II South Africa was our ally and an important member of the Anti-Hitler Coalition.

South African waters were of strategic importance during the period when the supply route through the Dardanelles was closed. Cape Town, for example, played a crucial role in the Lend-Lease freight. Around 3,000 South African seamen served in the Royal Navy... carrying valuable supplies to our northern ports of Murmansk and Arkhangelsk to relieve the besieged Leningrad.

<...> A South African aircrew found themselves in the liberated Crimea to witness the historic Yalta Conference of Joseph Stalin, Franklin Roosevelt, and Winston Churchill. <...>

***

Moscow and Pretoria re-established diplomatic relations on 21 February 1942, just weeks after Hitler had failed to capture Russia’s capital city.

Between 1942 and 1945, South African charities such as the Medial Aid for Russia and the Friends of the Soviet Union, raised about £1m (approximately R 1.2b today) to purchase and donate to the Soviet Red Cross much needed medications, surgical equipment, food, clothes, footwear, and other essential goods. <...>

In our Embassy in Pretoria, we keep a stack of copies of declassified diplomatic correspondence dating those years. Looking through these faded typewritten pages gives me a peculiar moving feeling. Among the reports of Soviet Consul General’s encounters with top officials of the Union of South Africa like Prime Minister J.C.Smuts and Secretary of External Affairs D.D.Forsyth, there are numerous records regarding public diplomacy and fundraising events organized by pro-Soviet groups all around South Africa.

In July 1944, the University of the Witwatersrand hosted the two-day African-Soviet friendship congress. In November 1944 the Friends of the Soviet Union launched the Soviet Pavilion. Up to 250,000 people visited it. <...>

Dmitri Shostakovich’s Seventh “Leningrad” Symphony, a work that became a musical manifesto of resistance to Nazism, was premiered on 9 July 1944 in Joburg and, two month later, in Cape Town.

***

Today, it is frustrating to see that some people begin to perceive Nazism as some sort of abstract evil of the past. In fact, the ideology of Nazism has always been rooted in particular concepts of racial superiority and European colonialism, things that South Africans may understand better than anyone else.

Given this vile nature of Nazism, its ultimate defeat in 1945 laid the foundations of the world as we used to know it. The UN Charter, the era of decolonization and independence in Africa and Asia, the fall of apartheid, and the rise of the Global South – none of these, indeed, would be possible without our Victory in the Great Patriotic War 80 years ago.

🇷🇺🇨🇬 President of Russia Vladimir Putin welcomed at the Kremlin President of the Republic of the Congo Denis Sassou Nguesso, who arrived in Moscow to attend the solemn events dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War (May 7, 2025)

💬 President Putin: Mr President, I am pleased to offer you my heartfelt welcome.

Our meeting today is tied to celebrating Victory in the Great Patriotic War Day. I am aware that in 1940–1943, the anti-fascist movement Free France was based in your present-day capital Brazzaville. It was headed by a man whom we remember, know, and treat him and his memory with great respect. The leader of that movement was future President of France Charles de Gaulle. He created the Free France movement headquartered in Brazzaville. I know that the Congolese people actively supported these activities.

Your participation in the May 9 events confirms the genuine friendly nature of bilateral ties based on law and mutual respect. Last year, we marked the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between our countries.

Mr President, we appreciate your focus on our relations. You have visited our country many times back in the days of the Soviet Union, and more recently as well.

The mutual trade remains stable. It may be modest overall, but we are constantly working to achieve the results that we have in mind. Congolese national staff has been successfully trained in Russia for a long time now, with about 750 Congolese students currently studying at our universities and about 250 state scholarships are allocated annually. We are ready to expand this quota.

Russia and the Republic of the Congo stand in solidarity in their approaches to addressing many pressing international issues. We appreciate our joint work at the UN.

I would like to emphasise that strengthening ties with Africa is on the list of Russia’s foreign policy systemic priorities. The St Petersburg summit resulted in adopting an extensive package of joint documents, including a comprehensive declaration and an action plan to 2026. Work is in progress to put them into practice.

Today, we have the opportunity to discuss all these issues, including the bilateral agenda.

Mr President, let me emphasise once again how pleased I am to see you.

Welcome to Russia!

🇷🇺 Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation:

🌠 On the occasion of the 80th Anniversary of the Great Victory, the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation compiled a report titiled "You Haven't Forgotten Me Yet".

During the Great Patriotic War, millions of Soviet soldiers perished afar, fighting against Nazism beyond their homeland. They liberated European countries from fascism. They paved the way and led them to freedom.

For many decades after the war, their memory was cherished, their remains in mass graves were preserved and revered, obelisks and monuments to their deeds and military glory were erected and looked after all across Europe.

But no more... In recent years, these memorials have been vandalized, demolished and "relocated". On several occasions monuments have been even been dismantled with the remains of the dead exhumed and reburied.

In many cases, the demolition and desecration of memorials was carried out by the decision of the current-day authorities at various levels, all part of the ongoing efforts to rewrite history and subvert the historical truth. More often than not it is down at the behest of the descendants of those who lost then, Nazis & their cronies — now in power and seeking revenge.

The Investigative Committee of Russia has registered 167 such cases. And each of them is under official investigation.

"You Haven't Forgotten Me Yet" gives a sneak peak into the due process of the Russian investigators' work.

Touching memories of the descendants of the heroes, footage of operative filming of investigative actions, comments of official representatives of specialized ministries and agencies, historians and archivists — all this on the eve of the 80th Anniversary of the Great Victory in a special report of the Investigative Committee of Russia.

Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov and heads of foreign delegations laid flowers and wreaths to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the Alexander Garden near the Kremlin's wall on the eve of the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

🔹 The event was attended by senior military officials from Abkhazia, Algeria, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Egypt, India, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Laos, Libya, Myanmar, Mongolia, Niger, Nigeria, Thailand, Equatorial Guinea, South Ossetia, and South Africa.

🕯 The participants of the ceremony honoured the memory of fallen warriors by a minute of silence. The ceremony ended with the marching of a company of the Guard of Honour and a band company.

⬆️ The ceremony of laying wreaths by state officials at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a well-established tradition.

The ashes of the Unknown Soviet soldier were transferred from a mass grave in Moscow region and reburied in Alexander Garden during a solemn ceremony in 1966. The following year a memorial was opened here, the key element of which was the Eternal Flame.

The guard of honour at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier - ‘Post No. 1’ - was established in 1997.

🗓 On May 8, 1967, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier memorial architectural ensemble in Alexander Garden near the Moscow Kremlin Wall was solemnly unveiled.

On December 3, 1966, a burial ceremony of the remains of an unknown soldier was held at the exact spot. These remains had previously rested in a mass grave at the 41st kilometre of the Leningrad Highway, where fierce battles were fought to defend Moscow against Nazi invaders.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a monument to military glory, a symbol of eternal memory for the unnamed heroes who gave their lives, defending the Motherland.

🌟 Inscribed on the tombstone are the sacred words: "YOUR NAME IS UNKNOWN, YOUR HEROISM IS IMMORTAL." In front of it lies a five-pointed star and the Eternal Flame of Glory.

In 1997, by decree of the President of Russia, a guard of honour was established at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

On November 17, 2009, to preserve the historical and cultural heritage of the peoples of the Russian Federation, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was designated a National Memorial of Military Glory.

🕯 In 2014, in memory of the burial of the remains of the defender of Moscow in Alexander Garden (1966), December 3 was declared the Day of the Unknown Soldier.

🎥 Eternal Heroes — an RT Doc Film.

Synopsis: The documentary pays tribute to those who defended the USSR against fascist invaders during World War II.

The film tells the stories of some of the last surviving veterans of the Great Patriotic War, ordinary Soviet citizens, who became heroes in the fight against Nazism.

Among them:

🏅 103-year-old Valentina Minaeva, a surgical nurse who served in three wars and saved hundreds of lives;

🏅 100-year-old Vitaly Kolesov, an artillery commander who survived the horrors of the war, including the Battle of Stalingrad;

🏅 98-year-old Nikolay Teplotanskikh, a volunteer tank driver who repeatedly rescued wounded comrades and miraculously survived himself.

With each passing year, the number of veterans diminishes, with many now over 100 years old. Yet, their memories of wartime trials remain vivid.

Witness the poignant recollections of those who lived through the horrors of war.

🇷🇺🇨🇳 Media statement by President of Russia Vladimir Putin following Russian-Chinese talks (May 8, 2025)

💬 President Putin: As always, our talks with President of the People’s Republic of China took place in a warm, friendly and constructive atmosphere. It was a substantive and productive discussion.

<...>

Overcoming the unprecedented hardship and horrors of war, our nations conducted the ultimate heroic feat to restore peace but also, as is well known, suffered the greatest losses. Today, Russia and China stand together in their consistent efforts to preserve the historical truth about the Great Victory as the common value for humankind, and jointly prevent attempts to falsify history and rehabilitate Nazism and militarism.

Our shared heroic past and combat brotherhood form a solid foundation for the development and strengthening of Russia-China relations. These relations have reached the highest level in history, being self-sufficient and independent from internal political factors or momentary global agendas.

The comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation between Russia and China are built on the unshakable principles of equality, mutual support and assistance, as well as the unbreakable friendship between the two states and two nations.

I want to emphasise that Mr Xi Jinping and I personally control all aspects of Russia-China partnership and do all we can to expand the cooperation on bilateral issues and the international agenda alike.

During today’s talks, we discussed politics and security cooperation, economic ties, as well as cultural and humanitarian exchanges in detail.

✍️ As you have just seen, following the talks, we have signed an impressive package of documents.

The Joint Statement Mr Xi Jinping and I have signed sets ambitious goals, in particular, ensuring significant progress in Russian-Chinese trade and investment by 2030, expanding and improving the structure of economic ties by increasing the share of high-tech products, developing innovative e-commerce, mutual supply of essential materials, mineral resources, and agricultural products.

📈 China is Russia’s leading trade partner. In 2024, our trade set a new record, reaching $245 billion. Russia is also one of China’s leading trade partners.

<...>

When addressing crucial international and regional issues, we reaffirmed that Russia and China maintain identical or highly aligned positions.

🌐 The two countries pursue independent foreign policies and are interested in creating a more just and democratic multipolar world order.

As you know, the United Nations marks the 80th anniversary this year. Russia and China both believe that the UN and its Security Council ought to continue playing the central role in global affairs, while all the issues and problems on the global and regional agendas must be addressed in compliance with the UN Charter and international law, with due account for the interests of all international community members with respect for the cultural and civilisational diversity.

⚡️ On the eve of the 80th Anniversary of Victory, the world gratefully remembers the heroic struggle of the Soviet people against Nazism. Music is a universal language that not only unites us and helps us better understand one another but also allows us to feel the pulse of history. Several musical groups from Zambia, India, Indonesia, China, Tanzania, and South Africa came together to perform the legendary song “The Sacred War” by composer Alexander Alexandrov and poet Vassily Lebedev-Kumach. The lead part was beautifully sung by a young girl named Liza from Russia.

🇷🇺
Arise, vast country,
Arise for a fight to the death!
Against the dark fascist force,
Against the cursed horde!

Let noble wrath
Boil over like a wave!
This is the people's war,
A Sacred War!

We shall repulse the oppressors
Of all ardent ideas,
The rapists and the plunderers,
The torturers of people!

Let noble wrath
Boil over like a wave!
This is the people's war,
A Sacred War!

The black wings shall not dare
Fly over the Motherland,
On her spacious fields;
The enemy shall not dare tread!

Let noble wrath
Boil over like a wave!
This is the people's war,
A Sacred War!

We'll drive a bullet into the forehead
Of the rotten fascist filth.
For the scum of humanity,
We shall build a solid coffin!

Let noble wrath
Boil over like a wave!
This is the people's war,
A Sacred War!

🎙 Russia’s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova’s answer to a media question regarding US President’s Special Envoy Keith Kellogg’s statement

Question: On May 6, US President’s Special Envoy Keith Kellogg said in an interview with Fox News that President Vladimir Putin’s disagreement with this proposal was the only obstacle to establishing a 30-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. What is your comment?

💬 Maria Zakharova: The statement made by US President’s Special Envoy Keith Kellogg during an interview with Fox News on May 6 surprised us.

❗️ Russia has never been opposed to a ceasefire. Moreover, we have declared it twice.

In March, we supported President Trump’s initiative for a 30-day moratorium on strikes against energy infrastructure, and in April, we declared an Easter ceasefire. Had Kiev complied, it could have been a step towards a long-term ceasefire.

Unfortunately, Kiev sabotaged both. The Ukrainian Armed Forces violated the moratorium 136 times and the Easter ceasefire nearly 5,000 times, indicating either the Kiev regime’s inability to stick to agreements or its lack of control over its own military.

We have also repeatedly stated that establishing a ceasefire across the contact line which is about 1,200 km long, more than the distance between Washington D.C. and Chicago, for such an extended period, 30 days, involves a host of subtleties that need much time and attention.

It is important to ensure effective monitoring of compliance with the ceasefire, to prevent this time from being used to build up the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ combat capacity, or to expedite mobilisation and arms supplies. Otherwise, 30 days later, the conflict will flare up with renewed vigour. We are confident that neither Keith Kellogg, nor President Trump want things turn out that way.

Thus, Kiev remains the only obstacle to a ceasefire. It violates agreements and is unwilling to seriously discuss the terms of a long-term ceasefire.

What the Ukrainian Armed Forces will do during the 72-hour May 8-10 ceasefire, declared by President Putin for Victory Day, will show if Kiev is truly seeking peace.

🌟 Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s greeting to organisers and participants of the Ambassadors of Victory: Peace Team international rally (May 7, 2025)

✍️ I cordially welcome the organisers and participants of the Ambassadors of Victory: Peace Team international rally. It is deeply symbolic that it is held in the Tula Region, a place which is inextricably linked to the feat of the Soviet people during the Great Patriotic War.

I would like to begin by commending the efforts deployed by the Volunteers of Victory national public movement, uniting over one million people from 89 regions of Russia and 60 countries worldwide, and the Government of the Tula Region, for making this event possible.

Taking place in the days that mark the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory, the rally brought together genuine enthusiasts. Your noble endeavour to uphold historical truth, to celebrate the glorious chapters of our past, and to instill in younger generations a spirit of patriotism and enduring moral values, deserves utmost respect.

Your dedication is of particular significance today amidst the growing attempts in a number of countries to distort the history of the Second World War and to glorify Nazis and Nazi collaborationists. It is our shared responsibility to uphold the honour and the legacy of those who saved the world from the horrors of the Nazi scourge.

I am confident that your rally will be held in an informal and friendly atmosphere, and the exchange of experience will make a significant contribution to advancing the cause of the volunteer movement.

I wish you every success and all the best.

🇷🇺🇨🇳 Talks between President of Russia Vladimir Putin and President of China Xi Jinping (Moscow, May 8, 2025)

💬 President Putin: Mr President, dear friend, dear Chinese friends.

It is a great pleasure to welcome all of you to Moscow.

I am truly delighted to see you again and sincerely value the opportunity to speak with you personally. I am grateful that, just as you did ten years ago for the previous anniversary, you have chosen to join us in commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory, which our nation holds sacred.

Tomorrow, the official parade will take place on Red Square featuring servicemen of the People’s Liberation Army of China. As far as I know, this is the largest foreign military contingent to take part in the event.

The victory over fascism, achieved through immense sacrifice, holds enduring significance. Together with our Chinese friends, we are committed to upholding historical truth, honouring the memory of the war years, and standing against the resurgence of neo-Nazism and militarism today.

I would like to express my gratitude for your invitation to the commemorative events marking the 80th anniversary of victory over militarist Japan and the end of World War II. I will be delighted to pay an official visit to friendly China on this historic occasion. And prior to that, our delegation will participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit to be held under China’s chairmanship.

The military brotherhood forged between our nations during those difficult wartime years remains a cornerstone of today’s comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation between Russia and China. We expand our collaboration for the benefit of both nations; our efforts are not directed against any third party.

Our relations are based on equality and mutual benefit, and remain unaffected by momentary interests. Our willingness to foster neighbourliness, strengthen our friendship, and expand cooperation reflects the two countries’ choice driven by our strategic cooperation.

I would like to once again note that our governments, ministries, and agencies are striving to implement a full range of practical agreements within a multilateral mechanism of regular meetings. Those include a plan for comprehensive economic cooperation through 2030.

Mr President, my dear friend, thank you very much once again for today’s visit. This holds great significance to us.

The immeasurable losses borne by both our nations demand perpetual remembrance. The Soviet Union lost 27 million lives, sacrificing them at the altar of the Fatherland and the altar of Victory. China gave 37 million lives in its struggle for freedom and independence. This victory was achieved under the leadership of the Communist Party.

We are delighted to see you at the festivities. I am certain that we will use this time to exchange opinions on the entire scope of our relations.

Thank you.

🎙 Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s answer to a question from Moscow. Kremlin. Putin news show (Moscow, May 7, 2025)

What would you call a situation where countries that have been proudly calling themselves ‘European’ for all these years close their airspace to other European leaders flying to Moscow? What does this mean?

💬 Sergey Lavrov: I have to censor myself out of deference for television rules, so I cannot say what I really think about this. But they have certainly disgraced themselves.

Ursula von der Leyen and another official said today that they “must accelerate Ukraine’s path towards membership” of the European Union and launch the accession process this year.

They also want Serbia to join the anti-Russia sanctions and accept the loss of Kosovo. So, it appears that leaders who preach Nazi values, like Vladimir Zelensky and his team, are welcome to join the European Union, while those who defend true historical memory, one shared with Russia, risk being stripped of their rights.

Shame on the EU!

🎙 Statement by the Delegation of the Russian Federation at the Third Session of the Preparatory Committee for the 11th Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction; New York, 6 May 2025)

💬 The Russian Federation has consistently supported the idea of establishing a zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction (a WMD-free zone) in the Middle East. This issue has traditionally been one of our top foreign policy priorities related to nuclear non-proliferation.

This stance was reflected in particular in the Kazan Declaration "Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security" adopted by the BRICS Summit on 23 October 2024 and emphasizing the efforts aiming at accelerating the implementation of the resolutions on the establishment of a zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East. <...>

On May 11, 2025, it will mark 30 years since the NPT Review and Extension Conference adopted the Resolution on the Middle East, which played an important role in ensuring the indefinite extension of the Treaty without a vote. Russia was one of the co-sponsors of that document. We are fully aware of the responsibility that this status entails for us and believe that the WMD-free zone issue should remain on the agenda of the NPT review process until the goals and objectives of the Resolution are fully achieved.

👉 During these 30 years, Russia has been making significant contribution to the establishment of the WMD-free zone at every stage of this process. One should remember, among other things, the 2010 NPT Review Conference Action Plan and subsequent efforts to convene a conference on a Middle East WMD-free zone with the participation of all States of the region, including the process of informal consultations in Glion and Geneva in 2012-2013 initiated by our country.

There was also the 2015 NPT Review Conference, when Russia's proposal served as a basis for the Middle East section of the outcome document. Unfortunately, the emerging consensus was thwarted by the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada — of whom the former two had co-sponsored the Resolution of 1995 — which essentially precluded the NPT forum from making any progress towards the establishment of a WMD-free zone for years to come.

Russia participates as an observer in the UN Conference on the Establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction convened in accordance with the UN General Assembly decision 73/546 of 23 December 2018.

We welcome the role and contribution of other observers:
China, the United Kingdom and France. We believe it important that the IAEA Secretariat, the OPCW and the BWC Implementation Support Unit have engaged in this work.

❌ Unfortunately, there is a major constraint on the ME WMDFZ Conference process imposed by the absence of Israel and the US among its participants.

During the half a century that have passed since the UN General Assembly adopted the first resolution on a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East in 1974, a great deal of effort has been made to make a ME WMDFZ a reality.

☝️ Such a zone would considerably strengthen international peace and security both within the region and beyond. Unfortunately, in the current circumstances the prospects for practical implementation of this initiative in the near future remain slim. We see our task here in supporting this process as much as possible.
