Dedicated to King Ludwig II of Bavaria, the 7th Symphony in E major is a masterpiece by the Romantic composer Anton Bruckner (1824 - 1896), premiered on 30 December 1884 at the Leipzig Stadttheater by the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under Arthur Nikisch. Large parts of that still hugely popular Symphony were composed in St. Florian, where Bruckner is buried in the monastery.
Bruckner was the only cultural great during the time of the Third Reich to be inducted into the Wahlhalla Hall of Fame near Donaustauf (Bavaria) with a bust in the presence of Joseph Goebbels and Adolf Hitler, and the Adagio of Bruckner's 7th Symphony was broadcast over the Reichsrundfunk on 1 May 1945, after the new President of the Reich Grand Admiral Karl Dönitz had announced Hitler's death.

When Hitler bid Otto Wagener farewell in early 1933, he swore him to "hermetic silence," declaring: "During so many nights we discussed... so many things, and I have revealed to you... my innermost thoughts and MY MOST FUNDAMENTAL IDEAS, as I have done perhaps to no one else. Please keep this knowledge to yourself and thus become the guardian of the grail whose inmost truth can be disclosed only to a few."
