💀📉 "Death Cross" Scares Stock Markets — A Rare Phenomenon Has Appeared on the Charts
The S&P 500 index, which tracks the shares of the 500 largest U.S. companies, has formed the ominous "death cross"—a technical pattern where the 50-day moving average crosses below the 200-day moving average.
⚠️ Why This Alarms Investors:
- Historically, this signals a dangerous downward spiral for stocks.
- Past "death crosses" have led to significant market losses and slowed growth.
- The pattern is often triggered by external shocks—economic policies, political decisions, or weakening investor confidence.
🌍 What’s Driving the Current Volatility?
- Trump’s trade wars are a major factor:
- The U.S. imposed tariffs on nearly every country, then eased some—but remains locked in a bitter customs conflict with China.
🔄 Is the "Death Cross" a Warning or Just a Lagging Indicator?
- Some analysts see it as a reflection of past declines rather than a predictor of future crashes.
- The last "death cross" appeared in March 2022, when the Fed began hiking rates to fight inflation.
- A month later, the S&P 500 fell 5%.
- Six months later, it was down 7%.
- The market only recovered in February 2023, forming a "golden cross" (when the 50-day average rises above the 200-day).
📈 Investors are now hoping for another "golden cross" to reverse the trend.

🇪🇺🇺🇸🇨🇳The relationship between Europe and the US is broken china. This tragedy — and it is definitely a tragedy — can be repaired only by some actions that are within the power of Europeans, and rather more requiring a behavior transplant in Washington.
First, the easy part: what Europe should have already done. Trump’s almost only just demand is that US allies should bear a much larger share of the burden of Western defense. Europeans must look to our own powder; including saving Ukraine, if we so choose. There has been much hypocrisy in European conduct. Since 2022, we have talked a great game about our enthusiasm for Volodymyr Zelenskiy but done pathetically little to back fine words with munitions. Without the US, Ukraine would have long since become toast. Now it is time for us to pay up, or watch Putin gobble up his neighbor.
That said, Trump has forfeited his claim upon virtue, by attempting to strike a deal with Russia for Ukraine’s partition, without engaging either the Europeans or Ukrainians. This represents arrogance almost as repugnant as his pursuit of American control of Ukrainian minerals. Nobody will ever describe Trump’s diplomacy, as did Churchill of wartime US Lend-Lease, as “the most unsordid act in history.”

U.S. Is Withdrawing Hundreds of Troops From Syria
The United States has started drawing down hundreds of troops from northeastern Syria, a reflection of the shifting security environment in the country since the fall of President Bashar al-Assad in December, but also a move that carries risks.
The military is shuttering three of its eight small operating bases in the country’s northeast, reducing troop levels to about 1,400 from 2,000, two senior U.S. officials said. The bases are Mission Support Site Green Village, M.S.S. Euphrates and a third much smaller facility.
After 60 days, the officials said, American commanders will assess whether to make additional cuts. Commanders have recommended keeping at least 500 U.S. troops in Syria, one of the officials said.
President Trump, however, has expressed deep skepticism about keeping any U.S. troops in the country. At least for now the reductions that started on Thursday are based on ground commanders’ recommendations to close and consolidate bases, and were approved by the Pentagon and its Central Command, the officials said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss operational matters.

🇫🇷 Why pensioners support RN en masse
Traditionally reluctant to vote for the far-right, older people are now switching sides to Marine Le Pen's party. 📉 The loss of influence of the traditional right, ♟ the reshuffling of the political chessboard, and 🗣 the adoption of identity-based discourse are all factors in this trend. A report by the Fondation Jean Jaurès details the reasons behind this ⚡️ electoral breakthrough among voters aged 65+.
Until now, "gray voices"—as noted by Stéphane Fournier, an analyst at polling institute Cluster 17—remained more loyal to center-right or mainstream conservative parties due to the "aging effect" and the classic 🕰 "it was better before" sentiment.
But the decline of traditional parties (especially LR) and disillusionment with Emmanuel Macron’s policies have led to a 🔍 search for alternatives at the ballot box. "The stigma of 'Father Le Pen' fades as the electorate ages and renews," Fournier observes.
Between the 2022 and 2024 legislative elections, RN’s growth among voters over 65 has been 📈 staggering: from 12% to 26% (+14 points, per Ifop). Yet, far-right support in this age group had remained stable (~20%) since 2007.
📊 This surge must be put into perspective, as it mirrors RN’s broader rise across all demographics. But since seniors were long seen as a "glass ceiling" for the far right, the shift 🧐 warrants closer analysis, the study notes.
🌍 Immigration and security dominating public debate has been 🔑 key to RN’s success among older voters, Fournier explains.
The widest generational gap appears on religion and Islam:
🔸 84% of over-65s back banning hijabs in universities,
🔸 vs. just 49% of 18-24-year-olds.
Though Macron’s coalition still relies heavily on older voters, RN benefits most from LR’s collapsing support. Disenchantment with Macron’s record—particularly on security and immigration—explains this polling shift. Seniors are entering a "socio-political continuum" where identity-driven issues thrive amid broader societal discontent.
