Phase 0 - Pre-Runic

The Negau B helmet suggests the presence of a Germanic goði in a Celtic religious setting during the pre-runic phase. Its northern Etruscan inscription, likely from 350–300 BC, reads Harigasti teiwa (“Harigast, priest of Teiwaz”). Originally an Etruscan design (500–450 BCE), the helmet was later repurposed for ritual use and buried around 50 BCE in Noricum along with Celtic-inscribed helmets with religious titles, which further suggests shared ritual practices.

Theories link this to Suebi-Noricum interactions, which explains a Germanic goði in a Celtic area. The inscription possibly confirms the Germanics introduced written script to the Celtic & Etruscan peoples.

In the early ages of antiquity, there came a great teacher to our folk, granting us culture & organizing our societies. He taught us how to hunt, weave, build, & farm. He taught our first kings the ways of the Gods & how we are to live good lives; from this came the law, the Æfinrúnar, the "Runes of Earthly Life," which combines our rituals & legal institutions. So that the rites could retain their unique status within the religion, we’ve named this work, the Æfinlǫgr "Laws of Earthly Life;” thus, maintaining the connection to the original concept.

This Æfinlǫgr is an attempt to reconstruct the ancient Teutonic law, by examining every legal text contained within the records, looking for commonalities within each code & within our lore, then developing a code we can follow today. This is yet another part of the chain, the next link in reforging our connection to our ancestral tradition. May the Gods shine upon us as we restore order to our once great nations!

Understanding What a Rune Is

The word Rune originates from Old English Rún, and developed speech-wise into Roun/Rown (just as Tún became Town and Dún became Down). Its usages were a whisper, mystery, a secret, that which is written, and a letter or a written sign. Taken as a whole, these meanings convey a sense of mystery, secret knowledge, whispered conversation, a magical sign, or a runic character. Falling out of use for several centuries, German retained the Rúne form, passed it onto the Dutch, who in turn re-introduced it into English. Though knowledge of runes diminished across Europe after the 11th century, Scandinavia retained some awareness of their use, as the native Germanic religion was able to survive longer, given their northern extremes. The runes contain both the esoteric and the mundane, as seen in written communications, with both spiritual and practical aspects practiced.

My Hearth in Devon switched to the lunar-solar calendar in 2019. Previously, when I lived in Sweden, I held blots on sunsteads, but one particular Midsummer, I think it was 2017, there was a full moon up at the same time as the Midsummer sun. It was an extraordinary experience at a Nordic Bronze Age barrow. We were all enamoured with the moon although we thought it was a solar rite.

In hindsight it was a foreshadowing of my adoption of the lunar-solar calendar

Six Key Points for Understanding the Runes

1. Runes were an alphabetic script corresponding to single sounds, following an efficient “best fit” model with no redundancy

2. They had an angular design; straight lines & sharp angles (45° and 90°)

3. Designed for carving, runes were practical in their origins & required deliberate effort. Mediums were tied to natural materials, such as bone, wood, stone, & metal

4. Runes served practical purposes, such as marking ownership, but also carried an aura of mystery & esoteric elements

5. Messages were often hidden or scrambled, enhancing the runes’ mystical reputation & enabling layered meanings

6. Runes followed a standardized sequence (f, u, þ, a, r, k (ċ)), crucial for codes & preserving consistency across variations

When I started this channel with a couple of friends it was a result of two factors. 1) That many said America had no culture even art. Something I hope to have at least rectified on that front. The other however was 2) what exactly is an American and what is American Culture? Something I myself had but an inkling of understanding of the sheer breadth of what awaited me. Thus the friend I started this channel with was sent forth due to work and it became more of a personal account. One in which I could both share the culture of America I loved and grew to learn more about, but also explore that age old question of what is an American? To be perfectly honest that question has never quite been satisfied. One could argue you must be part of the founding stock which is fair enough but most of those who settled Appalachia and further West, North and South of the Original 13 Colonies were not of said stock.

In the end I think the true answer and the reason it is so hard, is the reason it is so hard for anyone to describe their culture, for the same reason a fish may have trouble describing water. I think being American is something you know when you see it. It's not just cultural. I've spoken before on how Europe essentially self sorted and we are everything they did not want to be. We have our our own ways over here, a branch of the Grand Tree of the Old Ways.

In the words of Walt Whitman we are "A Nation of Nations" There are many many stems of the tree over here a Cajun is not a Hoosier. But they are both American in the same way both the Moonrakers and the Welsh are British. National identities are often far more complicated and only truly excel when the ability to have your "tribal" identities is preserved. Furthermore I hold that not everyone can be of the Tribes of America. Mainly because if you wish to see whether someone is truly part of a country remove the history of that group and see if that history is intact. The Redman and the Ameriblacks while distinctly of this continent are not "American" one could argue North American. But their history is not ours it occurred adjacent to ours, opposed ours more often than it every helped, when removed much of our history would've been the same. They are their own peoples.

One does not solve the immortal question of American Identity with one Telegram channel of course. But for me I think I've waffled enough on where I stand on this question. Now is not the time for philosophical ponderings but for hard stances and strong men.

With that said I am going to take a break from this channel to decide what if anything I wish to do with it going forward. Might change the name, might not.

I have appreciated the vigor and support of everyone American or Not who has followed and enjoyed what I've posted (mostly art) and I hope when/if I return I can do my part to put the shine back in our history, culture and people. With a bit of Pluck, Moxy and Grit. And a little elbow grease for the spitshine.

The Hamarvíg

The Hammer Sign, sometimes known in Old Norse as the Hamarsigna, is a simple ritual to make items holy, using either a ceremonial hammer or your fist. Now, “signa” is s a Latin-derived word, so Hamarvíg would be more appropriate (in keeping with the Old Norse). This practice is used to bless sacrificial items & during Sumbl ritual. In our Tradition, Þunor/Þórr’s hammer has been used to bless funeral pyres, weddings, & runestones, et al; showing its power in making things sacred. To perform the Hammer Sign, touch your forehead, chest, left shoulder, and right shoulder in sequence, forming the shape of a hammer. Finish by saying, “Þórr vigja!”, which means “Thor consecrate!” This ritual calls upon Þunor/Þórr’s power to bless & protect.

In the Anglo-Saxon Folcsidish tradition, we might refer to it as the Hamorblétsing, or Hammer Blessing, & when finishing the rite, we call out, “Þunor blétsa!”
