Greetings Raven Folk,
This weekend I will be sharing the Old Norse Bidja (prayer, bid) that we will be using for the Full Moon blot we will be doing together Sunday night this weekend. Attached will be an audio for you to practice the pronunciation.
"Hjalpaðu Óðinn, (Help me Odin)
ek kalla þik nú. (I call on you now)
Galdra þú mér gal, (galdr me galdrs)
þau er góðir eru. (that are good.)
Bjarg þú, faðir, barni. (As a father would for his child/children)
Á Hann skal til þess heita!" (For this he shall be called/named!)
"Heill Óðinn!" 3x
Note on pronunciation.
The d's that have a line through the stem have a 'th' sound as in the word 'the.' When the consonants 'rn' or 'rl' are together they are pronounced with a 't' inserted in the middle; i.e. rtn and rtl. Thus, barni is pronounced bart-ni. A similar thing happens with 'll' where a 't' sound follows the 'l'. This happens if the two L's end the word. For instance, kalla above sounds just like it looks but heill is pronounced like heilt, having a t ending sound. This may sound confusing at first. Just listen to the recording and look at the Old Norse words above. Getting the pronunciation correct is more important than understanding why the sounds are the way they are.
In the audio attachment I have recorded the Bidja one line at a time. The lines are spaced out to where you have enough time to speak it before the next line starts. This ought to help everyone practice and be prepared. Also this Bidja can be used for any male deity, hero or ancestor. All you change is the name at the beginning and the end. I hope this helps. Until next time...
