▫️Foster mom arrested for allegedly trading girl for monkey from Texas
A Missouri woman and longtime foster mom was arrested after she was accused of trading a foster child for a monkey in Texas.
Brenda Ruth Deutsch, 70, of Lincoln County, was charged with three felonies — neglect, child abuse, and child endangerment — following allegations involving a missing foster child who was later found in Texas, prosecutors announced last week.
Lincoln County Prosecutor Michael Wood told NBC News in a phone call that officials are still investigating whether Deutsch traded the child for the monkey or if the two incidents were unrelated. Regardless, he said, the child’s disappearance still warrants the existing charges.
"At least two witnesses have come forward with information regarding the transportation of the monkey back to Missouri after the child was delivered," Wood said.

▫️Beverly Hills Woman Sentenced To 25 Years For Aggravated Child Abuse In Citrus County
CITRUS COUNTY, Fla. – Karina Fortune, 32, of Beverly Hills, has been sentenced to 25 years in the Florida Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to aggravated child abuse. The sentencing followed a pretrial detention hearing held on Friday, April 11, stemming from her arrest earlier this month.
The case originated on March 22, when the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) responded to a report of a potentially missing or abducted 13-month-old child. The child’s grandmother informed authorities that she had left the infant in Fortune’s care. Upon the child’s return, the grandmother was shocked to find the infant’s face and body covered in makeup, initially causing her to believe the child was not her grandchild.
Subsequent investigation revealed the makeup was applied to conceal severe physical injuries sustained by the infant. A medical examination confirmed the horrific extent of the abuse, revealing extensive bruising, burn marks, a broken arm, a fractured collarbone, and severe dehydration.

▫️Survivors of childhood sexual abuse call out Calvert Hall for ‘systemic culture of silence’
New complaints were filed against Calvert Hall College High School on Monday.
Lawyers claim the school failed to protect children from “systemic sexual abuse” by priests, brothers and teachers. They’re accused of grooming and molesting children for decades. Kit Bateman is one of the plaintiffs coming forward. He said the all-boys Catholic school helped shape him as a person, but that there’s also a dark, painful part of his experience.
Lawyers named five people who were either priests, brothers or teachers. Those named are the Rev. Laurence Brett, the Rev. Jerome Toohey, the Rev. Francis LeFevre, Brother Geoffrey Xavier Langan and Mr. Stephen Arnold. The five are accused of various forms of rape and assault, with much of the accusations taking place in the 1970s.

▫️Snapchat sued in connection with Vermont child sexual abuse case
The parents of two Vermont children have sued Snap Inc., which owns and operates Snapchat, accusing the social media company of aiding and abetting a man who allegedly sexually abused their daughters.
The lawsuit stems from a November 2020 incident in which Brandon Rhoades, then 24, allegedly drugged and sexually assaulted two Vermont girls, both of whom were 12 at the time. Rhoades was charged with five felonies in connection with the incident, and last year he was convicted of aggravated sexual assault against a victim under 13 years old after reaching a plea deal with the state.

The former Manchester United and England striker was contacted by police over claims that Kenneth Lingard had conducted a 15 year campaign of abuse which started when the complainant was five-years-old. But the footballer, who now plays in South Korea, declined to give a witness statement, the investigating officer told a jury at Liverpool crown court yesterday. Detective Constable Scott Chambers, of Cheshire police, said that Jesse Lingard's mother Kirsty had also been asked to give a statement to the investigation but had also declined.

▫️Harvey Weinstein faces #MeToo retrial as imprisoned movie mogul returns to court
The sequel to the biggest victory of the #MeToo era starts Tuesday when disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein is retried in New York for alleged sex crimes.
It could take five days to seat a jury, Judge Curtis Farber has said. A jury in the same courthouse convicted Weinstein in 2020 of sex assault before New York's highest court overturned the conviction, deciding the judge had improperly allowed certain testimony from women whose accusations were not part of the criminal charges.

▫️PERSPECTIVE: Recognizing the Everyday Heroes
Every day, we face reminders of abuse, exploitation, and trafficking—stories that compel us to confront challenging realities. While powerful institutions and influential leaders often dominate our discussions of solutions, the true power to fight these injustices lies within the consistent, courageous actions of ordinary people.
Small, persistent deeds, repeated across neighborhoods and communities, form an impenetrable barrier against exploitation. These everyday acts of courage and kindness collectively dismantle the structures that allow abuse and trafficking to thrive.
Awareness is the essential first step, choosing not to ignore the suffering and injustice around us. Awareness leads naturally to education, empowering us to recognize signs of exploitation, abuse, and trafficking within our communities. With this knowledge, we become prepared to act decisively, whether volunteering at shelters, supporting recovery initiatives, or advocating for survivors.

▫️Taking action: Georgia targets Augusta’s human trafficking problem
Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr shared with us news of a brand-new expansion coming to Richmond County’s human trafficking unit.
Right now, the only office is in Atlanta, so this is a big move toward expanding the program.
Carr says Augusta has become a hotspot for human trafficking, so the hope is that expanding the Garden City’s unit can save victims.
Carr says they want to take the same regional approach they used with the gang unit in 2023 to help coordinate Augusta’s largest drug bust ever and apply the theory they feel is successful and use it for the expansion here in Augusta.

▫️Operation Draco: Spanish authorities say they dismantled a human trafficking organisation smuggling migrants into EU
A human trafficking organisation that smuggled Moroccan migrants into Spain and other EU countries was dismantled in southern Spain, government officials announced Sunday.
Spanish authorities claim the organisation contacted Moroccan nationals wanting to migrate to Spain and flew them into Romania. Once in Romania, they travelled by land to Spain through other EU countries inside trucks or vans.
The Spanish Civil Guard law enforcement agency said in a statement that the organisation made more than 50 trips to Spain during a two-year period, with groups between 20 and 50 migrants, who paid €3,000 per person.
Four people were detained in the city of Cartagena in the Murcia region during a raid which took place sometime during the past days, accused of belonging to a criminal organisation and human trafficking.

▫️Organ trafficking: A lesser discussed form of illegal trade
When describing organ trafficking, there is often confusion as to how this crime can happen. Global Financial Integrity (GFI) estimates that 10 percent of all organ transplants including lungs, heart and liver, are done via trafficked organs.
However, the most prominent organs that are traded illicitly are kidneys, with the World Health Organization (WHO) estimating that 10,000 kidneys are traded on the black market worldwide annually, or more than one every hour.

▫️Two friars suspended over sexual abuse allegations against vulnerable adults
Two friars were suspended last year following “substantiated” allegations of sexual abuse against vulnerable adults.
The details were announced by the Safeguarding Commission, which was set up by the Maltese Church to combat abuse. In the first case, there were three separate complaints of sexual abuse against a friar, all of which dated back more than 10 years ago. The case was not referred to the authorities because the victims declined to file a police report despite an offer by the Safeguarding Commission to accompany them.
The second case was referred to the police but the victim did not want to proceed with the police investigation. In total, the commission received 33 complaints in 2024 of varying types of abuse allegations; 19 involving minors and 14 involving adults, Head of Safeguarding Mark Pellicano said.
