After honouring the memory of the ancestors and lighting a fire from the ancestral altar, the celebrants march in a festive procession to the alka.
The fire brought from the mound is used to light the festive altar. The leader of the ceremony talks about the special power and significance of this day in our lives. Ceremonial hymns are sung. Sacrificial rites are performed to the Great Gods - Praamžius, Perkūnas, Žemyna, Gabija - eggs, gira, bread, salt are offered. We greet each other, wishing each other the greatest possible strength and blessings in the new year of Jorė.
A communal feast is shared after the celebration from a large ceremonial pot of soup. We treat each other with our own food and drinks, roll the joručiai (decorated eggs) swing on the swings, fry eggs, sing and dance.

2-3 April are the anniversary of the Longobard migration to the Cisalpine region and Italy. They represent the last Indo-European adjunct to the Northern Italian ethnogenesis and its role is relevant for the whole country. Furthermore, at the time of their coming, even if nominally Christians, they preserved a lot of Pagan traditions. Marzanna, Morena and Mara are various names for a female puppet still held in parades today in Slavic folkloric festivals (especially in Poland), who is then burned or drowned. According to scholarly theories of the last centuries, Marzanna represents either a deity of the vegetation or the goddess of winter and death who is chased away to propitiate spring.
In recent years, another hypothesis has been put forward by scholars, that Marzanna was more similar to a spring deity (perhaps also in connection with the planet Venus according to some Belarusian beliefs, or with the reflection of the IE goddess of dawn), who is introduced into the realm of the dead only later (by abduction) and therefore is not originally the goddess of winter and death. The hypothesis is fascinating and not entirely contrary, for example, to the fact that Prosperpina in the Italic-Roman tradition is also called Queen of the Afterlife, being the abducted wife of Dius Pater (Lord of the Underworld).

⚡ Jyrin Päivä / Jüri päev 🍀 The 23 of April in Christianity is dedicated to Saint George. In several cultures this Saint has assimilated traits of vernacular deities, in particular Gods related to agricultural practises but also the warrior's function. In the Finnic case, this day marked the beginning of the pasture, and the animals needed to be ritually protected. In Finnish the night preceding this day is called "huutoyö", meaning the night of the scream, that was made to send away the wolves. If a thunder was heard before Jyri then the summer would have been cold and rainy. In Ostrobothnia it was also known as "Jyrynpäivä" where Jyry is a local variation of Jyri but also means "roar of a thunder", connecting the figure with the natural phenomenon and maybe alluring to a Pre-Christian god connected with both the thunder and the day or period. In Estonia the 23 of April is famous for the revolts occured in 1343 (Jüriöö ülestõus), were the local farmers revolted towards the Teutonic Order and the Church. If one bears in mind that in a similar peasant's revolt (occured in July 1642) the Thunder god Pikne was still invoked, one may consider, that, despite its name, the Saint George's uprising had some sort of Pagan connotations, possibly strengthened by the connection between the Thunderer and the Saint.

Jorė expresses our ancestors' general concept of the resurrection of nature, the renewal of the life force, spring and the beginning of the year. In the Baltic and Slavic languages, words with the root *jar express phenomena of energy, fertility, vitality, e.g. Latvian jārēties - to plough, to frolic, to frolic, jēre - a young ewe.
Nowadays, Jorė is usually celebrated on the last weekend of April. It is celebrated in nature, at places considered sacred by our ancestors, such as mounds, burial mounds or groves. The day originates from a letter dated to 28.03.1748, in which a Finnish pastor laments the fact that people in his parish still frequent groves held sacred, even though the trees were ordered to be cut down. This is the reason Taivaannaula chose this date as the day that celebrates a part of the Finnish tradition that survives even to this day 🌲 🌲

It is only by welcoming and experiencing the divine transformation of nature that we are empowered for the whole year, and given the impetus to move forward, to create harmony. The bubbling anxiety of the body on the day of Jorė is transformed into the power of the spirit and fills our senses and souls with a flow of refreshment and strength. To be in Jorė is to be in spring - to return to harmony.

Although nowadays the date of Užgavėnės is linked to the Christian date of Easter and takes place 7 weeks earlier, in the past there was no such link. A. J. Greimas wrote: "The Christian era has made the date of Užgavėnės a movable day, formerly celebrated at the time of the vernal equinox. Around that time, the appearance of the young crescent moon heralded the beginning of the New Year.
It was believed that at this time, as in Advent, ancestral ghosts walked the earth and that a harmonious relationship with them would lead to an abundant and good harvest in the future. Ritual acts are performed on this day to mark the victory of the light-sun over the dark-"morę". This is linked to the earliest Indo-European myths.
