"The Northeastern United States boasts a fascinating history, with Native Americans recounting how these mysterious ruins predated their arrival.

According to their legends, these structures were crafted by powerful, unknown people wielding shining shields. Could these have been Norsemen who ventured to America during that era? Researchers offer various theories. Some propose an ancient Celtic influence, while others suggest another early civilization reached these shores. The consensus is clear: this site was not constructed by Native Americans, who reportedly avoided it themselves."

Norse settlers skirmish with Native Americans; AD 1010. Art by Angus McBride. 🇨🇦🇮🇸🇬🇱

This scene depicts the fight that took place during the expedition of Thorfinn Karlsefni, one of Leif Erikson’s associates who’d accompanied him on his first voyage to discover and settle in Vinland (now believed to be Newfoundland in Canada). On this occasion the natives, called “Skraelings” by the Norse, were put to flight by Erik’s pregnant half sister Freydís, who picked up a sword and bravely stood to face them.

It’s now a known fact that Norse explorers reached and colonised America. But what many don’t realize is that Norse sources describing their voyages to North America, such as the Landnámabok, Saga of Erik the Red, Eyrgybbjia Saga, Hauksbók, and the Annals of Greenland, state that Gaels had already arrived and settled on the continent before the Norse. They describe a land near Vinland called “Hvítramannaland” (“White Men’s Land”), “Írland hit Mikla” (“Great Ireland”), or “Albania” (either from Latin “albus” meaning white, or possibly a reference to Alba, the Gaelic name of Scotland). Descriptions given by natives in Markland (Labrador) to the above mentioned Thorfinn, seem to indicate that the people there were Culdee monks (the white robes of the Gaelic monks could be the origin of the name “White Men’s Land”). As for the location of “Great Ireland”, the sources would seem to place it either on the east coast of Labrador, or somewhere in the area stretching from Nova Scotia and the Gaspé peninsula down through New England in the United States (more likely).

These Norse reports of Gaelic colonization in North America find interesting parallels in Celtic tradition: The Irish tale The Voyage of St. Brendan the Abbot tells of the journey of Brendan of Clonfert (AD 484-577), who sailed across the Atlantic from Kerry and discovered many strange islands and landmasses, including one described as the “promised land for saints”. Other tales such as The Voyage of Máel Dúin and The Voyage of Bran describe similar adventures by people who discovered mysterious islands and otherworldly realms westward across the Atlantic.

"The most influential of the theories of the Dighton Rock was one published in 1837 by a Danish scholar, Carl Christian Rafn. Rain had spent many years poring over the Icelandic manuscripts that told of early Viking voyages to the West. It was he who unearthed the now familiar story of Leif the Lucky and his voyage in the year A.D. 1000 to three North American regions called Helluland, Markland, and Vinland. And Rafn also came upon the saga of Thorfinn Karlselne [Karlsefni] who seven years later sailed even farther southward along the North American coast to a place called Hop. Thorfinn was accompanied by his wile Gudrida; at Hop, according to the saga, a baby boy named Snorro was born to them." Thorfinn's story is found in the Grænlendinga saga (pictured)

"preserved in the late 14th Century Flateyjarbók manuscript and is believed to have been first written sometime in the 13th century regarding events between around 970 to 1030."

"Dighton Rock is a 40-ton boulder that was discovered in the Taunton River of Berkley, Massachusetts, in 1690. It’s remarkable for its mysterious markings. The markings are seemingly inconsistent with any particular writing style, and the mysterious origins of the rock have baffled many. Throughout the years, a number of theories have been floated as to who the creators of the cryptic inscription may be.

One of the most popular theories is that the markings are Norse in origin. This theory suggests that the rock was a portrayal of a Viking voyage into the area as early as AD 1000. Another popular theory suggests that the markings are the work of Native Americans. There was a significant population of natives in the area where the rock was found, and similar markings have been found and attributed to various native tribes across the Northeast. Other theories suggest that ancient Phoenicians, the Portuguese, or the Chinese may be responsible for the markings."

"But where was Hop? In an effort to find out, the Danish scholar sent letters of inquiry to various American historical societies. Had the Vikings, perchance, leIt any traces along the American coast?

One of Rafn’s letters aroused the Rhode Island Historical Society to action. Was it possible, the learned members asked themselves, that Dighton Rock bore a Viking message?

A special committee was formed to co-operate with Rafn; several expeditions were sent to the rock, and a drawing of the inscription, scrupulously prepared and checked, was forwarded to Denmark. On it, Rafn and his associate Finn Magnusen, like many others before and since, found just what they had been seeking. They reported indubitable proof that Hop lay on the Taunton River."

Various depictions of the Dighton Rock through the centuries. The Rhode Island Historical Society illustration is Rafn's:

"Dighton Rock, they announced, portrayed in pictures precisely the episode described in the Norse sagas—'the famous ship of Thorfinn Karlsefne as it first set out for Vinland and came to this shore, with a windvane attached to the mast. His wife Gudrida, seated on the shore, holds in her hand the key of the conjugal dwelling.… Beside her stands their three year old son, Snorro, born in America.… A cock announces by his crowing domestic peace, as do also the shield at rest and the inverted helmet. Then suddenly approaching war is indicated. Thorfinn, leader of the colonists … seizes his shield and endeavors to protect himself against the approaching Skrellings, who violently assail the Scandinavians, armed with clubs or branches, with bow and arrows, and furthermore with a military machine, unknown to us, which in Thorfinn’s history is called a ballista.…'" #Skraelings (ibid)
The drawing made of the Dighton Rock inscriptions by Danish runic expert Carl Christian Rafn Rafn published his Antiquities Americanae, which contained more than 40 pages of analysis of the Dighton Rock. including the inscription: “Thorfinn and his 151 companions took possession of this land.” (source)
