And - happy 1 year anniversary to two people I love very much.

Marston and Isibel, hold fast to the course of love as a supreme act of the will.

You’ll conquer anything with it.

Wishing you both many, many more.
Happy 52nd anniversary to my mom and dad.

Real love is hard to come by - they’ve been a good example.
Am training
The simple “hack” for everything.

(There isn’t one)

Weights. Jiu Jitsu. Art. Music.

Whatever it is you’re trying to do:

Make the choice to do it for real.

Get a good structure in place for the practice of it and systemize the learning.

Study the basics exhaustively - often the complex stuff is just the basics applied at a high level.

Show up consistently.
(This doesn’t mean a couple times a week when you’re “feeling it.”)

Do that for ten years.

You’ll be good at it.

If you’re especially talented or exceptional, you can do it faster.

Luckily, for the rest of us, there’s hard work and consistency.

Lazy people are disappointed by this idea.

To others, the difficulty is its own reward - who wants a black belt that an average person can get in a couple years?

Whatever you say you want to do, it’s your actions over a long timespan that make that the truth or a lie.
Afternoon training.
6 months from 41.

Someone’s always telling ya, “just wait til you’re my age.”

They were right. It hurts. Even in my early 40’s, the accumulation of a life lived hard is stacking up.

The mileage on the engine and the parts is real, and most aspects of getting older suck - there’s no sugar coating it.

But pain isn’t a stop sign - it’s more like a turn signal. Adjust course, do what you can, get back on track or work around it somehow.

My family words are “Wir machen den Weg.”

We make the way.

Only other option is to quit, and that’s no kinda option at all.

Stay on it, fellas.

I’m pulling for you.
This was a really enjoyable interview and Dan seems like a great guy.

We cover quite a bit of ground in this, starting from the music end of things, then moving into culture, politics, cancel culture, paganism and what it means to be an outlaw these days.

I think everyone who enjoys my stuff will get something outta this.
NEW EPISODE — Neon Knights — Episode 5: Paul Waggener

https://hearthfireradio.com/watch?v=ykZhcjSQ&src=rds

Paul Waggener and Dan Capp talk musical journeys, influences, latest projects, Black Metal, and what it's like to be a heretic in 2025.
I owe a great deal to my mother, beyond the act of bringing me into this world to continue the story of my line.

She was a stay at home mom, but much more than just that - she homeschooled me, gave me an education and the tools to sharpen my mind and reason, taught me about art, music, poetry and literature.

She was very tough, as the mother of four willful boys - not given to sentimentality or softness, but I never questioned that she loved me.

I knew she had a strong, indomitable personality and will, but she never fought with my father in front of us, and respected him as head of the household, and instructed us on what a woman’s power and position should be in our own lives as we grew older.

There’s a lot to say, but not much that can be expressed beyond “thank you,” and “I love you.”

Make sure to call yours if you’ve got one living, and if she’s long gone - remember, she isn’t.

Happy Mother’s Day to all you good moms out there.

“Even bad men love their mamas.”
Yesterday’s training marathon. Including second grappling session from 4:30-7p.
Much needed light day today.

Cardio in the morning and teaching a no gi class with a few rolls in the evening.

Tomorrow:

2x gi sessions, plus cardio and weights with the lads.
PM teaching class in the gi.
Knee is pissed so light weight high volume squats and hammer 10-2’s for the noon session.
2 training sessions this morning:

Jiu Jitsu class with Coach Seth, then half an hour of cardio keeping the HR between 130-140.

A big night.
Such a positive and encouraging thing to hear from a friend and long time black belt.

Every belt promotion comes with a certain amount of trepidation and the knowledge you have to “defend” the rank advancement.

That’s one of the coolest things about physical culture, though.

It’s pretty easy to find out whether someone can put up three wheels or whip your ass on the mats.

Getting the nod of approval from these tough OG’s means the world to me.

Thank you, Micah.

Afternoon training.
Legendary US black belt Chris Haueter famously said:

“It’s not who’s good, it’s who’s left.

You’re going to be somewhere in ten years, why not be a black belt?

You just can’t quit.”

It’s been a little more than ten years for me, and I’m still not to black just yet, but it’s been a hell of a ride.

In many ways, my experience with grappling (especially now in my 40’s) has been a lot like some of the more gnarly, month long motorcycle runs I’ve made:

Excitement gets you to the starting line, endurance keeps you going when the feelings fade. Moments of exultation, long stretches of grueling boredom, nearly constant pain, and experiences that can’t be taken from you and you’d never trade for anything.

I’ll never be a world class competitor, or one of the greats at this, but it’s taught me a lot about grit, patience, mental toughness and just not being a quitter.

I’m still here, and still game, and hope to be for some time to come.
