The US ordered Europe to spend more on military to contain Russia while the US pivots to China in a "division of labor."
Not a "split."
Increased military spending in Europe would be highly unpopular unless European leaders could emotionally manipulate the public into believing it was necessary.
Thus this "split" and all the growing animosity everyone on both sides are being swept away by.
The end goal isn't an independent Europe, but an obedient Europe that tricked its own people to fulfill the directives given to it by the US.

The US "One China" policy recognizes Taiwan as part of China in principle, but in practice the US has increasingly undermined it.
Until now, it has fallen short of calling for Taiwan "independence," a move that would provoke war with China.
International law and the "One China" policy of nations around the globe recognize Taiwan as part of China and that China has only one government, the People's Republic of China in Beijing.
Attempts to support separatism in Taiwan is a direct violation of Chinese sovereignty and territorial integrity under the UN Charter and an act of war.
