I soaked way too many beans yesterday. I got up early today and canned refried beans with them.
We have family coming in this week. Canning refried beans makes days where we may get home late, easy for to throw a quick meal together. I can make some quick burritos, some sort bean layer dip, a side for tacos, etc.
Canning really is the ultimate meal prep, in my humble opinion. I also enjoy hearing the lovely sound of pings. One of their simple pleasures of life that bring me joy 🥰.

For Math, I’m a big fan of “game schooling”. We play bingo and I’ll have some treats or prizes. We also like to play board games like Chutes and Ladders. Shop is fun too for simple addition and currency recognition/various ways to make change.
We also do regular book work (right now I’m only focusing on Math and Reading for our formal homeschool work. We’re doing Jolly Phonics for reading and Easy Peasy for Math. Some of those dollar tree or Aldi workbooks are nice for review or repetition on something that needs a bit more practice).
“Game Schooling” is fun for those days of resistance, lazy homeschool days, or getting back in the groove after a break 😋.

If you did not see, Red Ice’s Stripe was canceled from their members only Odyssey account. A major financial blow to some great people that get the truth out there. Lana’s Llama has some great stuff available now.

Yesterday, I canned some BBQ beans. My mom has dementia and no longer able to cook. I’m hoping to get this recipe down so I can continue to pass it on to others and also gift it to people who also enjoyed my Mom’s recipe. I’d also like to give it to my Dad who misses some of my mom’s cooking.
I combined an online “approved” canning recipe with my mom’s infamous recipe. I had a ton left over so I threw them into the crock pot.
They don’t quite taste like Mom’s, so I will continue to refine the recipe. Either way, it will be nice to have on hand with summer coming as an easy dish to bring to a BBQ or a side on hot summer days.

My dad has been chronically anemic since as far back as I can remember as a child.
I recently persuaded him to ditch his “iron pills” and redpilled him on taking a beef multi organ supplement instead. Got his hemoglobin checked and it was 14.2 today. 💪🏻

Homeschool today.
My eldest is struggling with digraphs and blending. I take these dollar store plates and do “Diagraph Twister”. I will make it fun and say “right hand-ie” and she figures out what digraph. Sometimes we do hopscotch (she says the letter sounds as she hops). We also put plates out in a row and I will say the letter sounds (starting slow) and she jumps on the appropriate one and we speed it up and be silly.
Today we did “musical plates”. Whatever plate she was on when the music stopped, she would have to say the letter sound. If she got it right, we took it out, if it was wrong we reviewed it real quick and would go back to it later in the game.
With blending, I’ll do different plates for single letter sounds and switch out letters to make rhyming words or change the beginning, middle, end sounds. She’ll step on them with each sound and then we swipe all the plates together when blending the word together. Almost like a “cheer”.
Incorporating movement has been beneficial!

Feeling like a queen this evening after getting all my kids down early and getting my “Mom everything shower”.
The “Mom everything shower” is when you get to do all the self care things. You give yourself a facial, you tame your eyebrows, you do the hair treatment, lather exfoliate, shave, moisturize, ALL THE THINGS.
What made me feel like a queen was using none other than products from Traditional Apothecary! The castor oil rosemary hair and scalp treatment, soapwort shampoo, oatmeal and coffee exfoliating bar, lavender shave cream, nettle and marshmallow leave in conditioner, and ended the night with some lovely whipped frankincense tallow balm.
Go get yourself some so you can also feel like a queen (here)! 👑 💅

A few weeks ago, I had a friend over for tea (Grandma Towler’s, of course!). We were sitting outside chatting and my toddler came running by and accidentally knocked my cup out of my hands. I was devastated because I don’t think you can get these mugs anymore and it was my favorite tea mug.
She saw I was clearly upset about the mug. She gathered up the pieces and said she would try and fix it for me. I saw her yesterday and she gave me this 😭. Although I can’t use it as a drinking mug anymore, she turned it into a candle for me.
She used the Japanese technique called Kintsugi. It’s where you mend broken pottery in a creative and beautiful way. I wasn’t familiar with this method. I would have otherwise thrown this away and been upset about losing a one of a kind mug. Now it’s even more one of a kind. 🥰

Messy kitchen but…
Yesterday, I pressure canned 2 rounds of garbanzo beans. I rarely use wide mouth jars for canning because of the extra space wide mouth takes up in the canner, but I like that I can make hummus straight from the jar with the wide mouth using my immersion blender. Just drain bean juice (can save to make aquafaba) and add desired hummus ingredients.
Dried beans were one of the first things I ever PC. It’s easy and not a lot of prep work. No real loss if your first endeavor in PC is a fail since dried beans are so cheap.
I soak my beans in ACV for 12-24hrs, strain, rinse, fill jars halfway with soaked beans, and fill jars with 1” headspace. Only downside is it’s a long process time (85 min for pints, 90 for quarts). I have a gauge canner, so I have to sit and babysit it.
Alternatively, I would also recommend straight bone broth as a good intro to PC. Again, not much prep work involved and has a much shorter PC time of 20/25 minutes depending if you are using pints or quarts.

Homemade ham and cheese quiche (butt nuggets from our chickens) and homemade pop tarts filled with various home canned jams from the graveyard of jams in my fridge is what’s up for breakfast before starting homeschool. Happy Monday, everyone! 🌞

A possum got into our chicken coop a few nights ago. Unfortunately, lost a hen and this girl was injured.
We call her “Big Betty”. Initially she was going to be processed with meat birds a few years ago (her bread lays eggs and is hearty for meat), but my kids grew fond of her so we kept her.
We’ve been spraying her wounds with colloidal silver and giving her egg yolks with colloidal silver, cayenne, and collagen mixed in. We’ve also been giving her little bits of bone broth as well. The kids enjoy feeding it to her like soup. 😆.
Hoping she pulls through!

We aren’t big pie people, but I love canning pie fillings. It’s a great way to enjoy seasonal fruits when they aren’t in season.
Although I will make pies for company or a gathering, we mainly use it as toppings such as for these sourdough pancakes for breakfast (I don’t put any sweetener in the batter since we’re topping it with sweet things).
We’ll use the rest of the filling to make sourdough pop tarts this week. I also love using it make an easy oatmeal bake or fruit cobbler for breakfast!

I suffered a nasty burn earlier today. This whipped tallow has been absolutely amazing from Traditional Apothecary. The pain and inflammation has subsided considerably.
Calendula has always been a go-to for me for burns. The healing anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties from the frankincense and yarrow have been so soothing. Hands down the best tallow balm I have ever used!

It’s hard to get a decent looking picture of enchilada casserole (lol) but home canned refried beans, home canned enchilada sauce (using a friends family recipe) with peppers from last years garden, homemade sourdough tortillas, with raw milk cheddar to top it off for last nights dinner.
What I love most about canning is it really is the ultimate meal prep. We’re going to be doing. Some beach camping sometime this year and horn canning will really free up cooler space and make for some easy camping meals after long fun days at the beach.
I need to can more meats. Canned ground beef or chicken would have been a great and easy addition to this. It was great to put this together in no time with mostly (outside of the cheese) all homemade/home canned/home grown ingredients.
