Yuriev Monastery!3️⃣
Founded in 1030 by Prince Yaroslav the Wise, Yuriev Monastery is one of the oldest and most important monastic complexes in Russia. Located near Veliky Novgorod, it was a major spiritual and cultural center of medieval Rus 🧐
In the heart of this sanctuary, the St. George's Cathedral is located, which was built in 1119. The place has survived the Mongol invasion and many wars after that, but the WW2 period left this monastery in an extremely desolate state. German troops plundered the cathedral and used it as a military outpost, and as a result it was damaged by artillery 😭
Due to renewal works in 19th century and WW2, the original frescoes inside did not survive. In 1902 an iconographer M. N. Safonov was invited to create a new fresco cycle, which is still in great condition today 🥰
Overall, the Yuriev monastery is in a rather poor state, a portion of it is practically uninhabitable and is in dire need of reconstruction. Hopefully, we will see this ancient place shine once more in the future!

The Church of the Holy Sign of the Mother of God in Dubrovitsy 3️⃣
Finished and consecrated in 1704 in the presence of Peter the Great and his son. Orthodox church. . . But looks very western and reminds of Jesuit structures! This caused a lot of controversy among the conservative elites of the Church at the time of its construction. The exact architect remains unknown, though some theories suggest Italian or Swiss involvement.
The church for most of its history remained a private estate chapel used by whoever owned the land. So this very unique sanctuary was locked away from the common people. Can't say I am fond of the idea of building a church all for yourself 🤔
In 1930 it was closed and turned into a museum, but in the current time it continues to function as a church, services are held every day and it's open for all visitors! GOOD END 🥰
