👨‍🚀What does it take to become a cosmonaut? RT's documentary finds out.

🚀This is the story of a very personal but epic journey, starting as a childhood dream and then ending with a launch into outer space.

⭐️On the Day of Cosmonautics, watch the premiere of a new documentary film about how three ordinary Russians on their way to make child dream come true.

❗️The requirements to be a cosmonaut are strict: one must have a degree in piloting, engineering or science, meet rigorous psychological criteria, and be in excellent health. Also, height, weight, hip and chest measurements are important because a cosmonaut should be able to fit into a suit, as well as a spacecraft. Here are some of the main physical requirements:

age under 35
height 150-190 cm
weight 50-90 kg
foot size up to 29.5 cm

✔️420 cosmonaut candidates were shortlisted for the selection process, but only eight made the cut.

💬 Here is what Yury Gagarin said in a speech ahead of the launch: “Dear friends, both known and unknown to me, fellow countrymen, men and women of all lands and continents! In a few minutes a mighty spaceship will take me into the far-away expanses of the Universe. What can I say to you in these last minutes before the start? I see my whole past life as one wonderful moment. Everything I have experienced and done till now has been in preparation for this moment. <…> I felt very happy – to be the first in space, to engage in an unprecedented duel with Nature – could one dream of anything greater than that?” Right before lift-off, Yury Gagarin said his world-famous “Let’s go!”

🎙 Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s interview for the 'Newm TASS' educational media project (Moscow, April 9, 2025)

Question: My name is Vasilisa Pankova. I am an 11-year school student and winner of the 'MediaClass-in-TASS 2.0' competition. This year, our country celebrates the 80th Anniversary of Great Victory. I have participated in the competition with support from the National Centre for Historical Memory. While we in Russia cherish the memory of those who defeated Nazism during the Great Patriotic War, the West is attempting in every way to “forget” and distort our history. Is it worthwhile to “give them a shake” somehow?

💬 Sergey Lavrov: We have sought to “give them a shake” for a number of years now. In fact, the tendency to cast a veil over history emerged long before the special military operation. There were active attempts to equate the winners and the vanquished and to undermine and smear the role of the Soviet Union.

Our contacts with German diplomats over at least the past seven or eight years increasingly revealed a conviction on their part that they had paid everyone for everything and no longer owed anyone anything. That was a warning sign.

Germany has openly opted for a remilitarisation by changing its Constitution. It will borrow €800 billion to carry out an arms programme within the next three or four years. The ideology of Nazism is increasingly coming to the fore in the Federal Republic, despite the constitutional bans and rulings of the Nuremberg Trials.

But this is not limited to Germany alone. The same is happening in the Baltic States that are just living on Russophobia. <...> There are also some other countries in this category. Generally speaking, we observe yet another “wave,” where Europe is again up in arms against our country. <...>

What is there behind this? Germany is undoubtedly out to regain its erstwhile grandeur, with the old Nazi instincts breaking out at the genetic level as something that might come in handy in this regard.

As for the rest of European countries, some of them want to finally delete from history the pages of their national disgrace, collaborationism and connivance at the Nazis, while others regard the Nazi ideology as a new tool for keeping their positions on the European political scene. We will fight this.

☝️ Forgetting history, forgetting national spiritual and moral values, forgetting national roots has become one of the main causes of what we are witnessing in Ukraine. The nation is being encouraged to forget its Russian roots and what Russia has done to liberate and develop the huge territory that makes part of what is now Ukraine. The Americans and Europeans have taken advantage of a crisis in the former Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic to bring to power an openly Russophobic, Nazi regime that has declared a war on its own people. <...>

We have promoted for years a UN General Assembly resolution against the glorification of Nazism. Each year, the overwhelming majority of states vote for it. Over the last couple of years, however, the West has meanly attempted to kill this resolution by submitting amendments that put Nazism on the same footing as what is going on within the framework of the special military operation.

But this did not prevent the resolution from remaining on the General Assembly agenda. It was approved again by an impressive margin of votes. This will continue in the future, too. <...>

All these things are important for preventing the recurrence of a situation where a half of Europe or even the whole of Europe would again be collected under the standard of Nazism and neo-Nazism and committed against our country, as, properly speaking, it is happening today. <...>

❗️ Our policy is aimed at preventing the sacred memory from ever disappearing from history and the minds of all generations, including the future ones. It remains unchanged. We are confident of our historical, moral and human righteousness.

❗️Russia not asking the US to lift sanctions – Special Presidential Representative for Investment and Economic Cooperation with Foreign Countries Kirill Dmitriev

Many Russians believe that sanctions actually have been good to transition Russia from dependence on the West. And nif you look at our GDP growth – it’s still 4% last year vs around 1% for Europe. And our debt-to-GDP [ratio] is 18% vs around 100% for Europe. SO the Russian economy has done well, and we don’t ask for any sanction relief.

I think what we see is that some of US businesses want to go back [to Russia]. And if they want, as part of going back, to have some sanctions relief – this is a good move to be done, but it’s a good move for America.

So at this point, we are not asking for any sanctions relief. We are just discussing that if America wants to have more business with Russia – and by the way there are 150 American companies still in Russia with 70% of them doing business for more than 25 years – then of course the US can do so.”

☝️Russia is concerned about possible consequences of the tariff war between the US and China and it will take measures to minimize the potential damage, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

💬"In view of the so-called tariff war between the US and China we would like to note that the situation concerning two main global economies, one of which being our long-term foreign trade partner, triggers serious concern," she told a briefing.

💬"We are monitoring the developments, and we will comprehensively analyze the potential consequences and, obviously, take measures to minimize the potential damage to our country," Zakharova added.

❗️"The recent tariff actions by the White House violate the fundamental rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO), she noted, adding that those "decisions showed that Washington no longer considers itself bound by the principles of international trade law."

"Unilateral tariff protectionism has been adopted instead of the legal WTO procedure for cases involving an increase in US tariffs," Zakharova stated.

🇷🇺🇺🇸 April 10 marked a round of Russian-American expert consultations in Istanbul, aimed at normalising the operations of the diplomatic missions of both nations and addressing accumulated bilateral “irritants.”

The delegations, led by Russian Ambassador to the United States Alexander Darchiev and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Sonata Coulter, exchanged diplomatic notes to formalise agreed commitments. These commitments are designed to facilitate unimpeded banking and financial services for Russian and American diplomatic missions, in addition to ensuring the fulfilment of the Russian Federation’s contributions to the budgets of the UN and other international organisations.

In the context of the issue raised by the Russian side regarding the return of six diplomatic real estate properties confiscated by the United States authorities and lawfully owned by the Russian Federation, the parties agreed to develop a roadmap. Ambassador Alexander Darchiev emphasised the importance of urgent practical measures in this regard, including immediate access for Russian representatives to inspect these premises and assess incurred damages.

Discussions also continued on easing visa processing and travel regulations for diplomatic staff within the host countries. The Russian Ambassador pressed for accelerated progress in resolving pivotal issues to bolster mutual trust and expand bilateral business and social ties, such as resuming direct air flights.

Following the consultations, the parties resolved to promptly refine the proposals tabled. The objective remains to achieve mutually acceptable solutions ahead of the next round, the timing of which is currently under coordination.

🇷🇺🇺🇸 The Russian delegation, helmed by Russia's Ambassador to the US Alexander Darchiev arrives at the Consulate-General of the Russian Federation in Istanbul — the venue for the consultations with the US delegation, headed by Sonata Coulter, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Russia and Central Europe, which will be begin shortly.

🇺🇳 On April 2, the Arria-formula meeting of UN Security Council members was convened at Russia’s initiative at the UN headquarters in New York, marking the third anniversary of the orchestrated events in Bucha.

The gathering included delegations from a wide array of states, experts, and direct witnesses to crimes perpetrated by the Kiev regime.

☝️ During the meeting, Russian representatives presented convincing and fact-based rebuttals – supported by specific examples, photographic evidence, and video documentation – to the unfounded allegations of crimes in Bucha levelled against Russia by Western nations.

Emphasis was placed on the contrived nature and glaring inconsistencies within Ukrainian and Western narratives, which rely on information manipulation, distortion of public consciousness, and the suppression of facts incompatible with their promoted storyline.

❗️ Particular scrutiny was directed at the baseless insinuations propagated by international bodies, including the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the International Criminal Court, which have effectively abetted the Kiev regime. Concern was expressed over UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ steadfast refusal to respond to requests from Russian law enforcement agencies for cooperation in investigating the circumstances of the Bucha provocation.

French journalist Adrien Bocquet, serving as rapporteur, delivered a fact-driven critique of international institutions and Western media for their biased coverage of the Ukrainian conflict. He underscored multiple violations of international law by the Kiev regime in Bucha, which he personally documented.

The West even declined to challenge the evidence of the staged nature of the events in Bucha presented by the Russian side. Instead, it resorted to recycling discredited anti-Russian tropes in an attempt to assign culpability to Russia for the scenario scripted by Western actors.

The discussion revealed that Western diplomats and UN officials continue to aggressively promote Ukraine’s version of events in Bucha while obstructing efforts to investigate the tragedy or hold perpetrators of these crimes to account.

The BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting will take place on April 28-29 in Rio de Janeiro, and Russia is actively preparing for the event, Russian Ambassador to Brazil Alexey Labetsky said in an interview with TASS on Tuesday.

🔹"We are actively preparing for the Foreign Ministers' Council meeting, which will be held on April 28-29 in Rio de Janeiro," he said. "Preparations for the April 30 meeting in Brasilia of high-level representatives in charge of security issues are also in our focus. Therefore, we can state without any hesitation that the BRICS agenda under the Brazilian chairmanship is very busy."

🔹"At the same time, meetings on environmental protection and artificial intelligence are being held at the working level in the Brazilian capital. The Brazilian chairmanship opted to center most of the BRICS expert consultations in the country’s capital, which is convenient for diplomats’ work. Rio de Janeiro is set to host only the Council of Foreign Ministers' meetings and the summit itself," Labetsky continued.

💬The Ambassador also noted that the Brazilian side has actively taken up the work of the BRICS presidency.

🔹"We see that they want to carry on with the active course that was established during the presidency of Russia and reflected in the Kazan Declaration, as well as with all of the projects that we are promoting," the ambassador said.

🔹"Brazil’s priorities in the expanded organization are aligned with ours. They are about the health, artificial intelligence, climate, and financial issues," he stressed. "The issue of further institutional development of the BRICS format itself has become important from the point of view of the task of working out the interaction in the expanded format."

💬According to him, the work is progressing actively in all areas, and the Brazilians do not slow down the pace.

🔹"Since Indonesia was admitted as a full member of BRICS in January, several important events have taken place. On February 25-26, the first meeting of the sherpas and sous-sherpas of the organization was held in Brasilia," Labetsky said.

🔹"Then, in March, productive consultations were held involving the heads of foreign policy planning departments of the BRICS Foreign Ministries. In late March, traditional consultations of BRICS deputy foreign ministers on the Middle East and North Africa were held, with the participation of the Russian delegation led by Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov," he added.
✉️ Vladimir Putin sent greetings to the participants of the International Forum, Memory of the Victors: 80th Anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

✍️“It is heartening to see that your forum has become a good tradition, once again bringing together representatives of civic, search, and volunteer organisations, as well as coordinators of the Immortal Regiment project from cities across Russia and many countries around the world.

Moved by a deep sense of duty, hundreds of thousands of people globally participate in the large-scale Immortal Regiment marches and contribute to a wide range of patriotic, creative, and information projects. They sincerely strive to preserve the memory of the most devastating war of the 20th century and the heroic generation of the victors by meticulously searching archives for photographs and documents about their relatives and loved ones.

In today’s challenging times, such unity and commitment to historical truth take on particular significance, as we are witnessing efforts in many countries to promote Nazism and Russophobia, to revise the outcomes of World War II, and to distort the role our nation played in securing the Great Victory.

💬I am confident that during the forum, you will engage in discussions on a broad range of topics related to the organisation of public events marking the anniversary of the Great Victory, share experience and propose new initiatives that will strengthen our connections with compatriots and foster international humanitarian cooperation as a whole.”
