"In April 1871 there met together an earnest and enthusiastic band of native-born Australians, resolved to put in practice, if they could, the theories that inspired them.
To-day, all but a very few, their names are absolutely unknown! The inspiration was individual; the action corporate; and in the organisation they founded the result of their united endeavours - this stands boldly revealed - a justification of their optimism and a lasting tribute to their memories."
