I was confused by a man who asked me to tell him about the "diversity" of colonial Louisiana: specifically about the Islamic and Hindu elements. I assured him there were scarcely even Protestants in early Louisiana, but he contradicted me, speaking of "America's Islamic heritage." I repeated that, although I was aware of the homegrown Nation of Islam in LA, there has been no Islamic presence in the state until recently.
