Least Chipmunk

If this little chipmunk looks wary, it is for good reason. It was being actively hunted by a short-tailed weasel (stoat) at the edge of Lower Waterton Lake in southern Alberta's Canadian Rocky Mountains.

Monk Parakeet

An escapee from the pet trade, large colonies of monk parakeets can be found in many places, like this one in the Cortez area of Bradenton in Manatee County, Florida.

Fisheating Creek

One of the best natural areas in all of Florida - Fisheating Creek. Completely rural with no signs of modern life - this is our favorite canoe trip for stepping back into time!

American Strawberry Bush

The American strawberry bush - also known by many other names such as the "hearts-a-bustin" and "hearts-bustin'-with-love", this member of the bittersweet family is one of those oddly beautiful plants you find sometimes in autumn while out in some of the more remote places in the Untied States. Found in all of the eastern states (excluding New England), most of the lower Midwest states, and as far west as Texas and Oklahoma, it literally looks like a strawberry growing on a shrub that is bursting with bright red seeds exposed within. As with many red-colored fruits in nature, this is best not to be eaten, as it has been reported to induce severe diarrhea in humans. The leaves, bark and stems are enjoyed by deer and other native wildlife who spread the seeds after consumption. This was found in Florida's Ocala National Forest near Juniper Springs.

Round-tail Horned Lizard

This round-tailed horned lizard would not have been spotted had it not suddenly dashed out from where it stood motionless right in front of me in the Chihuahuan Desert in New Mexico's Socorro County. One of the smallest of the horned lizards, these delicate desert-dwellers make their living eating mostly harvester, honey-pot and big-headed ants, with the occasional termite, small insect or larvae. What is most amazing about them is their natural camouflage!

Black Skimmer

The improbable-looking black skimmer - the unique bill is used for catching its food while skimming the water's surface with an open beak - in flight!

Purplish Prickly Pear

Found only within the greater Big Bend Region, this prickly pear can be vibrant green during wet times, or deep magenta during colder months or dry times. Yellow flowers with red centers will bloom from April to July. This one was photographed in Big Bend National Park in Western Texas.

Cracked Cap Polypore (Phellinus robiniae)

The cracked cap polypore is one of those woody shelf mushrooms often seen on the sides of old trees and has a special affinity for black locust trees, but can be found on certain oaks and acacia trees as well. Found across most of the eastern half of North America, and parts of the Southwest and Pacific Northwest. This particular one was found on the side of a black locust tree (Robinia pseudoacacia) in Hidalgo County in South Texas.

Yellow Flag Iris

An invasive, yet beautiful non-native yellow flag iris catches the first rays of sunlight over the basalt walls of Yakima Canyon on the Yakima River at dawn.

Desert Bighorn Ewe

A close-up of a desert bighorn ewe in Zion National Park in Southern Utah. I was hiking through the hills when in the early evening I came upon a large group of about thirty individuals, including other rams, ewes, and lambs. It took me an hour to get this close for this shot.

Leafless Beaked Orchid (Sacoila lanceolata lanceolata)

The brilliant and fuzzy leafless beaked orchid growing in Charlotte County, Florida in a stand of young pine trees. We found an unbelievable number of these all over Southwest Florida this spring and summer. They seem to be thriving in this drought!

East Pawnee Butte

East Pawnee Butte in the Pawnee National Grasslands of Northern Colorado. This fantastic geological feature was only made more beautiful by the numbers of pronghorn antelope and desert wildflowers found dotted around the region.
