🇷🇴⚖️⚡️ The Central Electoral Bureau (BEC) hasn't validated Călin Georgescu's candidacy yet!

All appeals to his candidacy were rejected by the Constitutional Court because the candidacy wasn't declared valid yet. Since BEC hasn't announced this Saturday whether or not Călin Georgescu is fit to run for president, they have to announce it tomorrow.

All appeals are pointless until BEC validates Georgescu's candidacy. The numerous titles from Romanian press reporting that the CCR or BEC giving Georgescu the "win" are part of a tactic to mislead supporters of Călin Georgescu into thinking they've won when, really, nothing happened. BEC is taking its sweet time validating that candidacy.

🇷🇴⚖️⚡️ The Constitutional Court rejected all appeals made against Călin Georgescu’s candidacy as they were filed early, without 24 hours having passed since his candidacy was submitted.

There is still more time for new appeals to be made.

🇷🇴🤝🇫🇷🇪🇺 — 🇷🇴📰 InPolitics | The geriatric coup d'etat! An operation designed for the likes of France and the EU

An event today [yesterday at the time of this post] made the majority of Romanians have a great laugh or facepalm, bewildered: six guys, led by a 101 year old retired general, were arrested by cops for planning a coup d'etat with the help of Russia. They would have changed society from its foundation, even renaming the country into Getaeia.

Sadly, what constituted a big joke for Romanians was taken very seriously by the rest of the globe and that was the purpose of this, to fuel the ongoing war between the EU, Washington and Moscow, our country being, as usual, cannon fodder, always ready to cut the branch from under its feet for a pat on the back from Brussels.

The day began with the story that 6 people were detained for preparing a coup since 2023 allegedly wanting to end Romanian sovereignty and turn it into a Russian protectorate. One of them, retired gen. Radu Theodoru and a few others, created a comical new Romania on a website. This isn't something new but this drew enough attention that this small group caused all of the state's law enforcement agencies: DIICOT, SRI, DGIA, DIPI, collaborate to take these people down. (...)

The press release given by DIICOT had a number of buzzwords which journalists had to pick up and report on: "coup d'etat" , "military reservists", "Russia"; add to it the story that Romania expelled two Russian diplomats and you can paint a picture that "grave things" are happening in Romania.

In Romanian press, the order was clear: this whole story needs to be treated seriously and the authorities must be praised for their "bravery" and "vigilance" with the narrative "Russia wants to take over Romania using the scum of society". After all, what more evidence does one need to keep justifying that Romania "is in its greatest danger since the end of WW2", that cancelling elections was justified even without proper evidence? That is what France through Emmanuel Macron said last night, that Russia interfered in Romania's elections. Former commissioner, Thierry Breton, also French, said that it was very good that the elections were cancelled and that they must be cancelled any time every time. French intel agencies said that Georgescu had behind him "occult forces".

Well, how can you contradict these people? And Romania is doing everything it can to confirm their claims without evidence. It expels Russians, it arrests evil centenarians, it creates a lot of smoke without fire, betting on the naivety of the foreign press, which trusts everything that comes out of Bucharest, never crossing their mind that a democratic state can invent crap of cosmic proportions. They are unaware of the typology of the Romanian politician, who is ready for anything and everything.

Let's remember how after the fall of the Ceaușescu regime, foreign press was telling how the Ceaușescu couple had sinks made of gold, that they were bathing in the blood of babies, that they were throwing away clothing after single use, that they had one billion in secret bank accounts etc. a puff of smoke meant to hide that the ”revolution” in Romania was getting rid of a bunch of commies to install a new set of commies.

Macron and Ursula can celebrate after today [yesterday]'s arrest: they received from the heroes of the Romanian people the "evidence" that Russia, America's new friend, is keenly interested to take over other countries besides Ukraine. This serves to cement that their fight to continue the war in Ukraine is not without hope".

🇪🇺🇷🇺🇺🇸 — 🇷🇴📰 InPolitics | Brussels under pressure! Călin Georgescu has the backing of two global superpowers, the two that matter!

"The SVR's analysis that the charging of Călin Georgescu came at Brussels' order is more than a metaphorical bomb. The analysis is not meant for the prosecutor on the case, Marius Iacob, not for the prosecutor general, Alex Florența, not for the interim-president, Ilie Bolojan, not for the premier Marcel Ciolacu or the minister of internal affairs, Cătălin Predoiu.

The analysis is meant for Brussels and Ursula von der Leyen! The SVR potentially has evidence to back up their claims meaning that this isn't an opinion anymore but a warning. It is obvious, after all, that Brussels wants to install a progressist-sorosist president in Romania instead of a sovereignist-trumpist

The same way the SMS between Ursula and the CEO of Pfizer, the conversations held behind seven sets of locks, represent the evidence of the great deal of the pandemic to the benefit of the Americans using Europe's money. Someone has those conversations but it is keeping them secret. When the pandemic was dying down, other European authorities were beginning to press Ursula on the vaccine deal. The European Parliament was demanding a hearing on this matter but just as the COVID-19 vaccine deal was becoming more mainstream, let's remember how the Qatargate scandal popped up and, suddenly, the European Parliament lost interest in questioning Ursula.

The U.S., led by Joe Biden at the time, has recorded every transaction and knows who received money from whom. Qatargate was a warning from Washington: "don't get near our partner", and they never dared to make Ursula uncomfortable again and they voted Ursula for a 2nd term.

It is evident that the SVR's analysis will be interpreted by the adversaries of Călin Georgescu as an endorsement from Russia. Perhaps Russia finds him more convenient in Romania than the alternatives. Georgescu's enemies should be focused on something else though: endorsements come not just from Russia but also the US, the US who supports him and denounces the December 6th coup d'etat.

This is dangerous for them because, by the looks of it, Russia and the US are about to enter a love-tandem, and they are denouncing the coup d'etat meanwhile the pseudo-power called "the EU", who is attacking Georgescu, is in free fall and with the EU falling so will the sorosists. It is no wonder that Georgescu is attacking the EU more often and harsher. He noticed weakness in the EU or someone told him that he has his back covered.

Washington and Moscow are aligning behind Georgescu and this is the source of his confidence and relaxed nature, usually defiant in the face of Romanian authorities. We were writing recently that it would be a catastrophe if the May elections would not be recognised by the US. How would it be if neither Russia or other allies, like Hungary and Slovakia, not recognise the results?

The regime in Bucharest is playing dangerously with fire but some of their behaviour leads one to believe that they are simulating a witch hunt to please Brussels because we cannot find a serious explanation for Georgescu's charges and the evidence brought against him which is pathetic".

🇷🇴🤝🇺🇦 A Romanian made CA-95 Short Mobile Air Defense System (copy of the Soviet 9k31 Strela 1) was spotted for the first time in service with the Ukrainian army on March 8th 2025.

What makes it distinct from other 9k31 Strela systems is that the CA-95 used the TAB79 as a support vehicle, the TAB79 being a distinct Romanian creation.

The picture could be older. If the picture is indeed recent, it means it must've been delivered quite recently, 2nd half of 2024 or even closer to 2025.

🇷🇴⚖️⚡️ The Constitutional Court (CCR) is reuniting this Sunday to decide if Călin Georgescu will be allowed to run for president!

Speculating here, this really can go down two paths:

1. The CCR disqualifies him invoking the precedent it set last October when it disqualified Diana Șoșoacă for being mean towards Brussels and NATO, the repercussions of whom will be felt by everyone as the U.S. should immediately impose sanctions on Romania which will destroy the government's ability to borrow money which will result in severe austerity measures if not outright collapse. Romania is in a very bad financial situation and difficulties accessing financial markets can be its literal doom.

2. The CCR doesn't disqualify him and doesn't invoke the precedent it set last October and let's him run for president meaning that the regime will try to maintain the perception of free & fair elections out of fear of destroying its relations with the Trump administration, and the regime will try to beat Georgescu legitimately, although having already put in practice a bunch of tricks meant to sabotage his support base like reducing the amount of time voting sections are open overseas or the new censorship bill.

🇷🇴🗳⚡️ — 🇬🇧📰 Financial Times | The far-right Romanian outsider backed by Washington and Moscow

"Călin Georgescu was, just a few months ago, a fringe ultranationalist known to few people even in Romania.

Today he is riding high for the second time in the country’s presidential contest, enjoying the active backing of not just Moscow but Washington, and defiantly resisting another attempt by the authorities in Bucharest to keep him out of power.

Georgescu’s journey from soil engineer to far-right politician, Covid conspiracy theorist and social media sensation has led some politicians in his country to suggest lasting links with the communist-era secret police and Russia.

Crin Antonescu, a joint candidate for the pro-European coalition parties in the May presidential election, called him a “ghost” of Romania’s feared spy agency during the cold war, the Securitate.

“He is a ghost of the former Securitate, he has the discourse of the Securitate, he has probably the support of the old Securitate,” Antonescu said last month. “It is absolutely shameful that 35 years after a revolution against communism and against the Securitate, we are now faced with a huge mirage and a lie.”

Despite pressure from both the US and Russia, Bucharest seems intent on barring the 62-year old self-described “sovereigntist” from running. Two people familiar with the situation told the Financial Times his presidency bid was likely to be thrown out because of the criminal probe."

When he left the courthouse where he was taken for questioning, Georgescu performed a Nazi salute.

His contacts with Russian nationals, including pro-war hardliner Alexander Dugin, are currently not the subject of the criminal probe, said a senior Romanian official.

If Romania brings charges against Georgescu, it will be “defending its sovereignty”, the official said, adding that the administration in Bucharest was aghast at the support he is receiving from the US.

Asked whether Georgescu may have been a former secret service agent, Romania’s body overseeing the Securitate archives (CNSAS) said it found no evidence of his recruitment.

🇷🇴⚖️⚡️ New week, another coup d’etat “foiled” by authorities

6 people including retired Maj-Gen. Radu Theodoru, a WW2 vet, who is 101 years old, had their homes searched in a case alleging high treason!

DIICOT prosecutors say the suspects had military training, they wanted to overthrow the government, dissolve all political parties and install themselves dictators, change the national flag, change the national anthem, change the official name of the country, fire all employees of public institutions, adopt a new constitution and that they requested technical support from Russia to do so.

Prosecutors claim that the 6 people had “constituted an organised crime group” since 2023 with the purpose of “destroying Romanian sovereignty”. They say that the group recruited members online with video materials and some traveled to Moscow where they, allegedly, talked to “important” Russian officials.

🇷🇴🇪🇺❌🌐 A deeper look at the new "misinformation bill" based on the EU DSA, prepared by lawmakers set to take effect on March 25th:

🔶 Vague Definitions (Art. 3, 4): Broad, unclear terms like "illegal content" (e.g., "hate speech," "manipulation") and "inauthentic behavior" lack precise criteria, risking arbitrary enforcement.

🔶 Procedural Gaps (Art. 5-7, 10): Immediate content blocking in "urgent" cases (undefined) and vague inter-agency roles lack safeguards or clear processes, enabling abuse.

🔶 Rights Violations: Freedom of Expression (Art. 30): Content removal without judicial oversight (Art. 6, 10) violates anti-censorship rules.

🔶 Right to Information (Art. 31): Blocking access (Art. 10) limits public info without transparency.

🔶 Fair Trial (Art. 21): Non-suspendable decisions (Art. 9(2)) and tight contestation deadlines restrict recourse.

🔶 Disproportionate Measures: Harsh penalties for social media platforms and providers (Art. 14, 50,000-100,000 RON/day) and domain blocking (Art. 10) exceed necessity, lacking evidence of milder alternatives’ inadequacy.

🔶 Censorship Risks: ANCOM’s extensive powers (Art. 5, 6, 10), short compliance deadlines (Art. 13), and no public oversight (Art. 16) could centralize control and suppress dissent.

Meanwhile, the party pretending to be in opposition to the current government, USR, initiated today an even more harrowing bill on online censorship:

USR MP, Radu Miruţă, initiator, says "it is time for Romania to be an example of good practices in terms of eliminating illegal content and limiting the propagation of false content on social networks, given the cancellation of the December presidential elections."

📝🇪🇺 Philippe Lemoine on X:

Do you remember the headline about how the EU had agreed on a plan to spend 800 billion euros more on defense? A document that was published today by Von der Leyen's office (https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/sv/statement_25_673) explains how they arrived at that number.

First, they created a new instrument that will make available 150 billion euros in loans, which member states may or may not avail themselves of. Second, they decided that, if that's to increase defense spending, member states could invoke the national escape clause of the Stability and Growth Pact.

The Pact ordinarily commits member states to limit their deficit to 3% of the GDP. In theory, if they exceed that limit, they can be subject to penalties. With that decision, if they increase their deficit because they raised their defense spending, it won't count toward the 3% rule.

To illustrate the idea, the Commission explains that if member states increase their defense spending by 1.5 points of GDP (it's just a totally arbitrary example, they don't give any reason to think member states will do that and they sure as hell haven't committed to doing so), it will amount to 650 billion euros of extra defense spending.

Since 150 billion euros + 650 billion euros = 800 billion euros, that's apparently where the 800 billion figure comes from 🙃 I know it sounds like a joke but that really seems to be the explanation for the headline figure.

They say that, by exempting defense spending increases from the Stability and Growth Pact (frankly it's not even clear exactly how this will work, because it's not as obvious as it seems once you start thinking about it), they will create fiscal space.

Of course, that's complete nonsense, because fiscal space is not primarily determined by EU rules on the deficit (which many countries, such as France, have been systematically violated for 30 years), but by the market. There is no reason to think that member states will actually increase their defense spending by 650 billion euros.

Even the 150 billion euros in loans is nothing more than a possibility that is given to member states. There is no guarantee that it will actually be used and, even if they do use it, it will be counted in defense spending, so the other 650 billion euros would have to come on top of that.

Moreover, even if they do spend an extra 800 billion euros on defense (which to be clear has virtually zero chance of happening), this figure is apparently for a period of 4 years.

Since last year defense spending in the EU amounted to ~326 billion euros (https://consilium.europa.eu/en/policies/defence-numbers/), it would result in a ~60% increase, barely enough to raise the bloc's defense spending to the 3% that Macron and other European leaders mentioned, which in fact may be the reason why they chose a 1.5% of GDP increase — again it's purely ad hoc — to illustrate their decision on the national escape clause.

They mention a few other things, but they're even more vague and don't include any figures, not even bullshit figures like the 650 billion euros one. Once again, all the talk about how they see the war in Ukraine as "existential", the virtue signaling and the chest thumping is complete bullshit, nothing fundamental is going to change.

🌹❌🗳 PSD loyalist and director of the National School for Political and Administrative Studies (SNSPA), Remus Pricopie, contested Călin Georgescu's candidacy the moment he submitted it to BEC.

Pricopie has been one of Georgescu's most vocal critics because the SNSPA is a government accreditation school where its students end up working for the government or in government aligned NGOs and think tanks. Very little studying is done at SNSPA, one would be better off going to a regular law faculty if they want to study politics and administration. SNSPA's only purpose is to create generation after generation of civil servants who are ready to die for liberalism.

Pricopie said that he contested Georgescu because he feels he "has a duty towards the Romanian people and the future generations to protect the fundamental principles of democracy and rule of law" by asking authorities to.. ban a candidate that legitimately collected the required signatures and who doesn't have any criminal record.

🇷🇴🗳⚡️ — 🇺🇸📰 The Economist | Romania is caught between Putin, Trump and Europe — Banning a pro-Russian candidate would anger America’s MAGA crowd

Călin Georgescu has friends in high places. In the past few weeks the Romanian presidential hopeful has received support from America’s vice-president, J. D. Vance, and its director of national intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard—as well as from Russia’s foreign intelligence service, the SVR.

Electoral authorities will decide by March 19th whether Mr Georgescu can run. He thinks that the moon landings were faked, and admires Romania’s fascists from the 1930s. More concretely, he vows to end aid to Ukraine. Before the election he was considered a fringe no-hoper; the big parties were stunned when he got 23% of the vote. In scrapping the result, the court ruled that he had received illegal financing and implied that Russia had boosted his viral videos on TikTok.

Romanians are bitterly divided. The establishment backs the court’s action, but both the populist right and many citizens fed up with politics support Mr Georgescu. Romania’s foreign partners are split, too. Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, supported the court. But officials in Donald Trump’s administration, including Mr Vance, Ms Gabbard and Elon Musk, have rebuked the Romanians—in concert with Russia’s SVR, which on March 4th called Mr Georgescu a victim of the “European totalitarian-liberal elite”. The next day Romania expelled Russia’s military attaché and arrested six people for “plotting to take over state power”.

Candidates for the presidential re-run must register by March 15th. Remus Ștefureac, who heads INSCOP, a polling firm, says Mr Georgescu leads the field with a share of up to 40% in the first round. He might still lose in the second round, if he is allowed to run. In October the court barred another pro-Putin candidate, Diana Șoșoacă, saying her statements threatened Romania’s EU and NATO memberships.

Romania’s biggest parties, the centre-left Social Democrats and centre-right National Liberal Party, are backing a joint presidential candidate. But Mr Georgescu’s popularity and the conflicting signals from America and Europe put them in a bind. Romanian leaders are always solicitous of America, says Rufin Zamfir of the GlobalFocus Centre, a think-tank. But now they are “like headless chickens”.

🌹🟦🇭🇺❌⚖️ Candidate for president supported by PNL, PSD (officially) and UDMR, Crin Antonescu, says he wants to turn the National Supreme Defense Council (CSAT) into a prosecutor and investigate corruption!

Talking to a young woman on the street, Antonescu tried to explain to her how corruption "represents a national security threat" to Romania and that CSAT should have legal prerogatives to tackle corruption. Antonescu mentions that in a 2019 ruling, the Constitutional Court forbid the CSAT from investigating corruption but he added that he believes the CCR "has changed its mind" since the last elections on corruption.

To translate, Crin Antonescu wants to declare corruption a "national emergency" and have the president, prime-minister and the directors of the intel agencies form a taskforce and tackle corruption. Crin Antonescu wants to bring the intel agencies back into criminal investigations and return to the era between 2005 and 2016.

Let's recap: in late 2004, Traian Băsescu wins the elections promising to eradicate corruption. The first thing he does in office was to decree corruption as a "national security threat" creating the premises for the secret protocols of the police state in which trials were judged not based on evidence but based on the wiretapping done by the Romanian Information Service (SRI), and they couldn't be contested, not even regarding the actual factuality of the recording. This was never done legally because it would have never passed a vote in Parliament, it was done through CSAT decisions, CSAT not having attributes in this topic, but the attributes were extended by the Băsescu regime.

In 2019, after Băsescu, his main executioner, former chief prosecutor of the Anticorruption Directorate (DNA), Laura-Codruța Kovesi (now head of the European Public Prosecutor's Office), and SRI general, Florian Coldea, withdrew from politics or moved on to other jobs, the CCR ruled that corruption was not an emergency.

The CCR's president at the time, Daniel Morar, one of the most appreciated and respected prosecutors in Romania (he also led the DNA), explained separately that, from a legal POV, corruption cannot be a "threat to national security" because Romanian penal law doesn't view it that way, pointing towards the fact that corruption is not included in the chapter of the penal code about crimes against national security and pointed out that CSAT decisions are inapplicable to him because, as a judge, the law protects him and because CSAT decisions are classified, being declassified in rare instances.

Daniel Morar during his time at the CCR, issued a number of important rulings which served to destroy the police state created by Băsescu, but which really continued to exist even after the December 1989 Revolution. It is important to remember that, Marian Enache, was appointed judge in the CCR back in 2016 meaning that Enache actually supported these rulings when they came out in 2016, 2019, but now his opinion has changed apparently.

Now, Crin Antonescu says that the CCR "has changed its opinion" and that it agrees with him (Antonescu being the face of the deep state) that corruption is a national security threat. Antonescu wants to recreate the secret protocols between the SRI and the DNA and every other special investigation body where those in power can bully the opposition and lock them up based on what all judges would normally consider ”inadmissible evidence”.

Marian Enache served his purpose, he has two months left until his term as judge ends and he will be left to retire. Remains to be seen who will take his place and two other judges who will be retiring with him.

🇷🇴🎙⚡️ Călin Georgescu held an interview with a popular journalist from Moldova, Natalia Morari. Here are the most important takeaways:

🔶 Georgescu thinks everything that happened after the December 6th coup d'etat was worth it because it unravelled the corruption in Romania. He views the democratic regime after the December 1989 Revolution as a "continuation" of the communist regime.

🔶 He denies the existence of Russian collusion saying that there is no proof but lambasts the EU, Moldova and the Biden administration for interfering in the Romanian presidential elections

🔶 He is campaigning for president in the Republic of Moldova. The fact that he chose Natalia Morari to give an interview with was a good hint, but several times throughout the interview he mentions the so-called "Moldovan people" which I've had rants about before. The Romanian citizens in Moldova are a significant pool to draw additional votes from and Georgescu is trying to appeal to those who hate PAS and vote for PSRM, MAN, PCRM and other pro-neutrality, pro-Moldovan statehood parties. Although he called them the "Moldovan people" he also refers to them as "our brothers beyond the Prut river"

🔶 Georgescu says Moldova with Maia Sandu is more isolated than ever from Romania and the US. He praises the US for uncovering the money laundering ring of Vladimir Plahotniuc, Veaceslav Platon and Ilan Shor in 2014.

🔶 Georgescu says "now its not a good time for Romania and Moldova to unite" because there isn't a clear majority in favor of union with Romania! He adds that Moldova should be more economically developed before uniting with Romania

🔶 After saying "Moldovan people" thrice, he then says that there's no such thing as the "Moldovan language" telling Morari that they are both speaking Romanian, not Moldovan. Adding to his previous statement, he reiterates that reunification isn't a subject Moldovans are ready for and Romania should wait for that he believes.

🔶 "Multipolarity is a reality which cannot be ignored any longer (...) the best ally Romania has is the United States and it will continue"

🔶 Romania needs to rely more on itself and use locally produced goods and groceries. He will evaluate projects and prioritise investments which make Romania less independent on imports. Romania should nationalise certain parts of the economy so that it regains control over some key resources

🔶 Romania has been a part of Europe before Brussels (EU) was a thing, it was a part of Europe thanks to its culture and civilisation said Georgescu. He also claimed that Romania "enriched" the EU but says that the EU is trying to erase Romanian identity with cancel culture and "woke ideology"

🔶 Under Georgescu, Romania will not be interested anymore in EU funds! He says that Romania has everything it needs to be self-sufficient. "The independence of a country is its capacity to finance herself and not rely on foreign support".

🔶 "During the times of St. Stephen the Great of Moldavia, the Ottomans would invade and pillage your country. Now its the EU doing the pillaging".

🔶 Georgescu says that foreign minister, Emil Hurezeanu, does not represent Romania!

🔶 Georgescu says that his grand plan is to make Romania the powerhouse of Europe and replace Germany in this aspect!
Says that, besides autarchy, collaborating with everyone is key for this plan to come to fruition.

🔶 He is not worried about being excluded from the presidential campaign. He then says: "But what if I don't agree with their decision? [if they exclude him]"

🔶
Georgescu believes the US will sanction Romania if the elections are cancelled again or held improperly

Let us recall that Marcel Ciolacu refused to kick out Victor Ponta from PSD after he announced he will be running for president, he refused to kick out Ponta even though he refused to back Crin Antonescu, something’s against the results of PSD’s general congress which are binding for all members and continued to protect him afterwards despite increasing pressure from Antonescu and Cătălin Predoiu who want Ponta out of PSD as they fear he will sabotage Crin Antonescu’s campaign.

Now Ponta basically says he will end Marcel Ciolacu’s political career if he gets elected president. Will this be the straw that broke the camel’s back?
