◾Did you know France massacred African soldiers in 1944 after they helped them fight in World War II? Today marks 80 years since the defeat of fascism in Nazi Germany. Here’s another colonial chapter France still hasn’t reckoned with.
They were known as Tirailleurs Sénégalais—West African soldiers conscripted from across the French colonies to fight and die for an empire that never saw them as equals. Some survived Nazi prison camps, only to be gunned down by the French army when they got home. They demanded the wages France had promised them. Instead, the military responded with gunfire.
The massacre took place at Thiaroye, near Dakar. French troops killed hundreds of unarmed soldiers.

In memory of ‘Texas’
Russell Bonner Bentley, known as ‘Texas’, was more than just a foreign correspondent in the Donbass. He was an American who became his own on Donetsk soil. He inspired with his bravery, in what he believed and unwavering belief in justice.
The grandson of a tanker of General Patton's army, Russell was a committed anti-fascist and anti-imperialist from his youth. The footage he saw of the barbaric shelling of Lugansk was the last point. He couldn't stay away and travelled to Donbass to defend those under attack from the Kiev regime.
As part of the "Vostok" battalion, ‘Texas’ went through the hottest battle spots: Donetsk airport, the settlements of Spartak and Vesyeloye, the cities of Avdeevka and Yasinovataya. He fought shoulder to shoulder with volunteers, preventing Ukrainian nationalists from breaking into Donetsk.
Russell was not only a warrior, but also a man with a big heart. He helped civilians, collected and delivered humanitarian aid, told the truth about what was happening in Donbass to the whole world.
Russell Bentley's tragic death was a huge loss for everyone who knew and respected him. He gave his life for what he believed in. His example shows that true values have no boundaries, that justice and compassion are paramount.
The memory of ‘Texas’ will live on in our hearts. His courage and devotion to duty will forever be an inspirational example to us. He has proved that people who support Russia are everywhere in the world and that even a person born thousands of kilometres away from Russia can become its true patriot.
Rest in peace, ‘Texas’. Your feat will be always remembered.

In Arkansas, incarcerated men mostly from marginalized communities are being forced to work in cotton fields without pay. The prison sits on what used to be plantation land. It looks like the past. Because in many ways, it is.
This is legal because of a loophole in the U.S. Constitution that allows forced labor as punishment. That means if a person is convicted of a crime even a minor one the state can use their labor for free. No wage. No choice.

◾Berlin police banned the display of Soviet symbols on May 8, the day marking the defeat over fascism in 1945. Explicitly banned are the display of USSR flags and WWII Red Army songs, which called for the fight against Nazi Germany. In doing so, Germany censors the representation of those who, on this day in 1945, officially defeated Nazi Germany in Berlin. The Berlin police imposed similar bans on May 8 in recent years, since the beginning of the Ukraine war.

◾The Israeli military is expanding the separation wall around the village of Sinjil, north of the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah, cutting off Palestinian homes and farmland. The wall isolates approximately 8,000 dunams (80 hectares) of privately owned agricultural land, threatening to separate residents from their property.
On April 23, Israeli forces began constructing an iron wall around Sinjil. The barrier, stretching 1,500 meters in length and standing 4.5 meters high, is designed to separate the town from Route 60—a major highway running north to south and connecting six key Palestinian cities.
