So some years ago, there was a guy who was sexually assaulting women on a trail that I did my run on. This had been going on for two years with no leads on the guy and as the attacks got more frequent and closer to where I lived, my husband suggested that maybe I shouldn’t go running by myself anymore.
I said, “don’t worry, I watched some self-defence videos, let me show you my moves.” I told him to come up behind me and grab my ponytail, with a plan to grab him by the wrist and throw him on the floor.
Well, he grabbed my ponytail and I was flat on my back with whiplash before I could even put my moves on him. As I’m lying there on the floor, he says, “Is this it? This is the move?” He swore he didn’t even grab me that hard.
So now I don’t harbour any illusions of being able to do any martial arts on anyone. My only move now if someone grabs me is just to go floppy and hope he isn’t strong enough to drag my dead weight very far. And maybe bite him if he doesn’t look too dirty. But that’s it- that’s all I’ve got for moves these days.
