On Tuesday, President Donald Trump indicated that the current 145% tariff on China is not likely to remain in place for long, suggesting a possible reduction in tensions after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent cautioned against an extended trade conflict with the communist nation.
During a press conference at the White House, Trump admitted that the 145% tax on Chinese imports "is very high," stating, "It won’t be anywhere near that high." He did not clarify when the tariff rate might be lowered or if he is awaiting a response from China in exchange for a reduced rate. "It will come down substantially, but it won’t be zero," Trump said.
His remarks followed Bessent's comments during a closed-door summit on Tuesday, where he warned that a trade war with China is unsustainable.
