In 1845 the inmates of one workhouse were reported to be so hungry that they were fighting over the shreds of rotting meat and marrow left on the bones which they were made to crush for use as fertiliser.There was a public outcry in 1848 after it was found that 10 children were forced to share a bed and somebody in the infirmary had been forced to lie in the same bed as a corpse. In 1839 one woman had to cut her hair off and was forbidden from wearing a cap for three months because she allowed another inmate to have "very improper connections with her".
