Legendary US black belt Chris Haueter famously said:
“It’s not who’s good, it’s who’s left.
You’re going to be somewhere in ten years, why not be a black belt?
You just can’t quit.”
It’s been a little more than ten years for me, and I’m still not to black just yet, but it’s been a hell of a ride.
In many ways, my experience with grappling (especially now in my 40’s) has been a lot like some of the more gnarly, month long motorcycle runs I’ve made:
Excitement gets you to the starting line, endurance keeps you going when the feelings fade. Moments of exultation, long stretches of grueling boredom, nearly constant pain, and experiences that can’t be taken from you and you’d never trade for anything.
I’ll never be a world class competitor, or one of the greats at this, but it’s taught me a lot about grit, patience, mental toughness and just not being a quitter.
I’m still here, and still game, and hope to be for some time to come.

As we practice a discipline, whether it’s weight training, grappling, or any other endeavor with a high fatigue factor, the critical question isn’t:
“How much can I possibly do without getting injured or worn down?”
It’s:
“How can I get the most out of the time I’m allotting to this?”
I’m often amazed by how someone can have a lifting program broken down into percentages, sets, reps, exercises neatly assigned to their own days and so on…
Yet attack everything else in their life in a completely randomized and haphazard way.
Pro-gram.
Pro: from the Latin, “before, in front of.”
Gram:
From Greek. “Writing, recording.”
I’m in favor of writing things down beforehand to have a clear and organized vision of what’s going to happen and in what measure.
Avoiding haphazard and chaotic activity by structuring one’s endeavors prior to performing them.
Good sense in all areas.
Make a plan, stick to it, win, repeat.

Every belt promotion comes with a certain amount of trepidation and the knowledge you have to “defend” the rank advancement.
That’s one of the coolest things about physical culture, though.
It’s pretty easy to find out whether someone can put up three wheels or whip your ass on the mats.
Getting the nod of approval from these tough OG’s means the world to me.
